This document discusses factors that can cause stress in dairy cows around calving and impact their health and milk production. It notes that the period from 3 weeks before to 3 weeks after calving is the most challenging as cows face metabolic, digestive, and calving stresses. Reduced dry matter intake pre-calving can predispose cows to health disorders post-calving. The document reviews biomarkers like non-esterified fatty acids and beta-hydroxybutyrate that can indicate negative energy balance and ketosis in cows during this transition period. It also examines the liver's role in ketone body production and clearance from the bloodstream when cows produce more fatty acids than can be utilized.

Jaylor’s Ruminant Nutritionist, Janet Kleinschmidt, explains why adding fat to the diet of dairy cows become a common practice for most high production herds.
Metabolic disorders in dairy animals are disturbances in metabolic processes that often occur around calving. Key periods are the last 3 weeks of pregnancy and the first 3 weeks of lactation due to hormonal and dietary changes. Common metabolic disorders include milk fever, ketosis, fatty liver disease, left displaced abomasum, and laminitis. Preventing these disorders requires careful management of nutrition, especially transition diets between dry and lactating periods.

The importance of colostrum and early piglet nutritionLeon Hall
This document discusses the importance of colostrum and early nutrition for piglets. It notes that piglets are born with low energy stores and no immunity, so colostrum provides antibodies, protein, and energy. Colostrum intake in the first 24 hours strongly influences piglet growth and survival. However, colostrum production and intake can vary greatly between sows and within litters. The document also describes gut closure in piglets and a product called Pig Volostrum Paste designed to supplement piglets that do not receive enough colostrum.
Not only has gentics and nutrition played a major role in maximizing milk production, but farm management, labor, and facilities all play a role as well. Jaylor's Ruminant Nutritionist, Janet Kleinschmidt, discusses how in PART 2 of this presentation.
ESBILAC milk replacer is a complete food source for orphaned or rejected puppies under 6 weeks of age or dogs requiring supplemental nutrition. It provides a balanced mix of protein, fat, carbohydrates and necessary vitamins and minerals similar to a mother dog's milk. The easy to mix, highly palatable formula is recommended for feeding puppies 2 tablespoons per 4 ounces of body weight every 3-4 hours for small puppies or every 8 hours for larger puppies, adjusting as needed.
Jan Kleinschmidt talks about the importance of nutrition from birth to weaning. She covers topics like preparing the dam, colostrum management, milk replacers, calf starter, feeding hay, and weaning.

This rehabilitation plan outlines a feeding schedule and diet for two draft horses over the course of two months. It aims to safely improve the horses' body condition by starting with only forage and gradually increasing grain and supplements. For the first 3 weeks, the horses will receive only 75% alfalfa hay and 25% grass hay, increasing to 30 lbs per day. Small amounts of a pelleted senior feed will then be introduced. Over several more weeks, grain levels will increase while hay content shifts to 50% alfalfa and 50% grass. Supplements will be added as needed before reducing alfalfa to 25% of forage at 2 months. The goal is a conservative approach given the horses' ages and health
This document summarizes a 4-step approach to restoring digestive vitality: 1) optimize digestion with broad-spectrum enzymes and pancreatic support, 2) support the healthy intestinal lining, 3) support mild cleansing and detoxification, and 4) re-establish a healthy balance of intestinal microflora with probiotics. It discusses specific product options for each step, highlighting ingredients, formulations, and delivery technologies to ensure viability of probiotic cultures.
This literature review examined experiments where dairy cow milk production benefited from fiber-degrading enzymes. The average milk yield increase was 5.5 lbs/day, though results varied widely from 2.6 to 13.9 lbs/day more. The response depended on enzyme dosage, combination, and application method. Some studies found low dosages increased milk but high dosages did not, possibly due to negative feedback or reduced rumen pH. Optimal concentrations need to be determined, as under- or overfeeding enzymes affects results. Enzyme combinations and application portion, such as concentrate vs total mixed ration, also influenced outcomes. Milk fat and protein sometimes increased as well, though not consistently across experiments.
Improving dairy cow performance with fiber-degrading enzymesFernando Diaz
The document summarizes several studies that examined the effects of adding fiber-degrading enzymes to dairy cow feed. The studies found mixed results, with some showing improved feed efficiency from lower intake without affecting milk production. Others found reduced efficiency or no effects. Effects on body weight and reserves were also negligible in most studies. The inconsistency may be due to differences in diet composition and enzyme dosage. More research is needed to identify optimal uses of these enzymes for dairy production.
This lab experiment aimed to quantify the amount of protein in milk samples. Different types of milk were diluted with a reagent and their absorbance measured with a spectrophotometer. By multiplying the absorbance values by the dilution factor, the amount of protein in each milk sample could be calculated in grams and compared to the nutrition label listings.

Cell Therapy Expansion and Challenges in Autoimmune DiseaseHealth Advances
There is increasing confidence that cell therapies will soon play a role in the treatment of autoimmune disorders, but the extent of this impact remains to be seen. Early readouts on autologous CAR-Ts in lupus are encouraging, but manufacturing and cost limitations are likely to restrict access to highly refractory patients. Allogeneic CAR-Ts have the potential to broaden access to earlier lines of treatment due to their inherent cost benefits, however they will need to demonstrate comparable or improved efficacy to established modalities.
In addition to infrastructure and capacity constraints, CAR-Ts face a very different risk-benefit dynamic in autoimmune compared to oncology, highlighting the need for tolerable therapies with low adverse event risk. CAR-NK and Treg-based therapies are also being developed in certain autoimmune disorders and may demonstrate favorable safety profiles. Several novel non-cell therapies such as bispecific antibodies, nanobodies, and RNAi drugs, may also offer future alternative competitive solutions with variable value propositions.
Widespread adoption of cell therapies will not only require strong efficacy and safety data, but also adapted pricing and access strategies. At oncology-based price points, CAR-Ts are unlikely to achieve broad market access in autoimmune disorders, with eligible patient populations that are potentially orders of magnitude greater than the number of currently addressable cancer patients. Developers have made strides towards reducing cell therapy COGS while improving manufacturing efficiency, but payors will inevitably restrict access until more sustainable pricing is achieved.
Despite these headwinds, industry leaders and investors remain confident that cell therapies are poised to address significant unmet need in patients suffering from autoimmune disorders. However, the extent of this impact on the treatment landscape remains to be seen, as the industry rapidly approaches an inflection point.
