This document provides descriptions of various film editing techniques, including seamless editing, continuity editing, motivated shots, montage, jump cutting, parallel editing/cross cutting, the 180 degree rule, splicing, transitions, cutaways, point-of-view shots, shot reverse shot, providing and withholding information, editing rhythm, and cutting to the soundtrack. For each technique, a brief explanation is given of what the technique is and what purpose or effect it has on the audience.
