cellular systems, playing important roles as back-bones or
access satellites, to provide ubiquitous global coverage to
diverse users. The challenges for future broadband satellite
systems, therefore, lie in the proper deployments of state-ofthe-
art satellite technologies to ensure seamless integration of
the satellite networks into the cellular systems and its QoS

Nevertheless, the most severe limitation of GPS performance will still remain – the accuracy of positioning deteriorates very rapidly when the user receiver loses direct view of the satellites, which typically occurs indoors or in severely obstructed urban environments. In such environments, the majority of receivers do not function at all, and even the high-sensitivity receivers have difficulty in providing coordinates with sub-decameter level accuracies. A new terrestrial radio frequency (RF)- based distance measurement technology, known as ‘Locata’, has now overcome the technical challenges required to create “a localized autonomous terrestrial replica of GPS”. This paper describes some of the technical aspects
of this Australian technology and discusses the possible role Locata can play as part of the National Positioning Infrastructure. Locata has developed a new type of antenna which allows industrial-grade, centimeter-level positioning indoors by mitigating multipath by forming and pointing tight beams at the Locata transmitters, significantly reducing the effects of multipath corruption of the direct positioning signal. This paper briefly describes Locata tests conducted in a number of conditions, including indoors, at an open-cut mine, airborne flight testing, and on Sydney Harbour. This article presents a new method for land vehicle navigation using global positioning system (GPS), dead reckoning sensor (DR), and digital road map information, particularly in urban environments where GPS failures can occur. The odometer sensors and map measure can be used to provide continuous navigation and correct the vehicle location in the presence of GPS masking. To solve this estimation problem for vehicle navigation, we propose to use particle filtering for GPS/odometer/map integration. The particle filter is a method based on the Bayesian estimation technique and the Monte Carlo method, which deals with non-linear models and is not limited to Gaussian statistics. When the GPS sensor cannot provide a location due to the number of satellites in view, the filter fuses the limited GPS pseudo-range data to enhance the vehicle positioning. The developed filter is then tested in a transportation network scenario in the presence of GPS failures, which shows the advantages of the proposed approach for vehicle location compared to the extended Kalman filter.

The study aimed to establish the shortest path for the road network to minimize traffic in the city and provide better transportation. GIS was used to survey the area, create contour maps and 3D models, evaluate different route alignments, and estimate cut and fill volumes. Raster analysis incorporated terrain information to determine the lowest cost route. The resulting ring road design was a 22 km route around Erode City connecting major roads to improve traffic flow and economic growth while reducing environmental pollution.

There are lots of efforts being made by public transport corporations to improve public vehicle occupancy
by requesting the public to use public transport over other modes of transportation. It can be noted that if
the passenger knows with high confidence that the bus is going to come, he/she will definitely wait rather
than opting for other modes of transport. Efficient information can therefore help the users to choose faster
and more easier connections which saves their time. Trends in wireless technology like Global System for
Mobile communication (GSM) and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) have resulted in easier and
faster communication. This paper presents a vehicle tracking system by integrating both of the above
mentioned technologies. The central server uses geographic information system (GIS) to track vehicles to
display the position information on the electronic map. This paper suggests a new cost-effective way for
tracking a vehicle in public transport domain and compares proposed technique to some of the methods
advised previously for tracking public vehicles.

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a reliable, versatile, generally available and comparatively accurate positioning technology, able to operate anywhere across the globe. Nevertheless, the most severe limitation of GPS performance will still remain – the accuracy of positioning deteriorates very rapidly when the user receiver loses direct view of the satellites, which typically occurs indoors or in severely obstructed urban environments. In such environments, the majority of receivers do not function at all, and even the high-sensitivity receivers have difficulty in providing coordinates with sub-decameter level accuracies. A new terrestrial radio frequency (RF)- based distance measurement technology, known as ‘Locata’, has now overcome the technical challenges required to create “a localized autonomous terrestrial replica of GPS”. This paper describes some of the technical aspects
of this Australian technology and discusses the possible role Locata can play as part of the National Positioning Infrastructure. Locata has developed a new type of antenna which allows industrial-grade, centimeter-level positioning indoors by mitigating multipath by forming and pointing tight beams at the Locata transmitters, significantly reducing the effects of multipath corruption of the direct positioning signal. This paper briefly describes Locata tests conducted in a number of conditions, including indoors, at an open-cut mine, airborne flight testing, and on Sydney Harbour. A new system can be proposed that will be composed of locata along with
femtocell to provide users both GPS and GSM services.

This article presents a new method for land vehicle navigation using global positioning system (GPS), dead reckoning sensor (DR), and digital road map information, particularly in urban environments where GPS failures can occur. The odometer sensors and map measure can be used to provide continuous navigation and correct the vehicle location in the presence of GPS masking. To solve this estimation problem for vehicle navigation, we propose to use particle filtering for GPS/odometer/map integration. The particle filter is a method based on the Bayesian estimation technique and the Monte Carlo method, which deals with non-linear models and is not limited to Gaussian statistics. When the GPS sensor cannot provide a location due to the number of satellites in view, the filter fuses the limited GPS pseudo-range data to enhance the vehicle positioning. The developed filter is then tested in a transportation network scenario in the presence of GPS failures, which shows the advantages of the proposed approach for vehicle location compared to the extended Kalman filter.

The increasing demand for commercial location-based services (LBS) has driven cellular-phone and network manufacturers to focus on positioning solutions, which are even more accurate than the regulatory mandates for positioning of emergency callers and other user services and applications. Our interest here is to outline the new technologies and applications evolved and appeared from the integration between the GNSS, GIS and wireless communications. We will give an introduction of GNSS by introducing the characteristic of the three satellite systems

LBS projects aim to improve user-friendly info-mobility services for position determination by combining wireless communications, satellite navigation (GNSS) and geographic information systems (GIS), based on a mobile client/server architecture (Lohnert et al., 2001). The meaning of GNSS is the technical interoperability and compatibility between various satellite navigation systems such as modernized GPS, Galileo, reconstructed GLONASS to be used by civilian users without considering the nationalities of each system in order to promote the safety and convenience of life (GALILEO, 2003; Feng, 2003).
