Social engineering attacks are the most prevalent types of attacks against IT systems. This is primarily due to the fact that they directly attack the weakest link in any IT system…the users. While there are many ways to lock down, or secure data residing on a computer or other device, securing data held in the brains of users is difficult to secure for a number of reasons. People have the ability to reason and even redefine rules, while computers do not. If you tell a computer to not allow access to a particular file by a particular user, the computer will do just that. However, a human can be tricked into giving up all sorts of information, often without even knowing that they have done so.
For this lab, you will conduct a social engineering audit on various social media websites. Almost every social engineering attack begins with the collection of data. The aim of collecting this data is to discover ways in which the target of the attack can be tricked into giving up potentially valuable information. This initial data can take many forms: birth dates, addresses, user names, pictures, phone numbers, names of co-workers or relatives, and much more. Often times this seemingly innocent data can be used to either directly impersonate someone the target trusts, or to build a collection of data which can be used to know more about the movements, personality, or general life of the target.
This lab has two parts, as described below:Part 1: Gathering data
To accomplish this part of the lab, you will access some social media sites of your choice. Obviously Facebook is a veritable treasure trove of personal data. However, there are many others like Flickr, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Instagram, which you might also consider. Locate data posted by or about users (they could be friends and family, or people you don’t know) which you feel could be exploited in a social engineering attack. This data can consist of many different things, but should pose a potential security risk for the user, or others. For example, my sister-in-law recently posted a baby shower invitation on Facebook to all her friends. Since my sister-in-law is a heavy Facebook user, the invitation was undoubtedly viewed by many people my sister-in-law does not even know. A baby shower invitation might not seem like a big deal, but think about what it contained. My sister-in-law’s home address for sending gifts for non-attenders. A time frame when she will not be home (because she will be away at the shower), and the address of where she will be during that time. Do you see the potential security problem here? This is only one of many examples I see on social media sites all the time.Part 2: The analysis
After you have gathered data from various social media sites which you feel could be used in an attack, you will conduct an analysis of your OWN social media accounts. Look at the types of data you felt were potentially d.

Social Media Privacy
Lisa Turner presented on privacy and social media. She discussed several privacy concerns with social media use including oversharing personal information, social data mining where companies extract user data, and location sharing potentially revealing when users are away from home. She also reviewed how social media use can impact careers, giving examples of individuals who were fired for inappropriate social media posts. Additionally, she covered how data breaches are a risk as personal data online has increased dramatically in the last 20 years. She concluded with some best practices for social media users to help protect their privacy.

In recognizing social networking sites as sites of sociological concern, this presentation will offer a surveillance studies perspective to this topic. Using Facebook as a case study, a review of key surveillance material as well as preliminary findings will underscore directions for future research. In particular, the popularized and controversial practice of 'Facebook stalking' will serve to illustrate how lateral (or peer-to-peer) surveillance not only supplements, but may also amplify conventional forms of monitoring.

ethics of internet research, I have discovered different viewpoints of research and determined some ethical concerns.
As this type of “web-based” research grows, researchers will face ethical concerns that are different from traditional research ethical issues, (Denissen, Neumann & Van Zalk, 2010)
The main attribute of internet research, as I see it, is the ability to have a global footprint; meaning almost any one that has a computer and connectivity can access all types of information and data. Along with this power, comes great responsibility. The web can be a wonderful tool which can afford individuals, organizations, communities, and others tremendous access into good and bad places. This access can afford humans into medical breakthroughs, how to guides on repairs and building, how to get from city to city, and a multitude of positive ways to learn and grow.
Internet research use is growing at a fast pace and consequently, is creating ethical dilemmas.
At the same time, it can be a way to link terrorists’ organizations, promote child pornography etc. As you can see, internet research can be used for the greater good, or to our detriment.
This is where the ethics comes into play, and guidelines are set up to monitor ethical issues which occur due to this process. Institutional Review Boards at institutions conducting this type of

ethics of internet research, I have discovered different viewpoints of research and determined some ethical concerns.
As this type of “web-based” research grows, researchers will face ethical concerns that are different from traditional research ethical issues, (Denissen, Neumann & Van Zalk, 2010)
The main attribute of internet research, as I see it, is the ability to have a global footprint; meaning almost any one that has a computer and connectivity can access all types of information and data. Along with this power, comes great responsibility. The web can be a wonderful tool which can afford individuals, organizations, communities, and others tremendous access into good and bad places. This access can afford humans into medical breakthroughs, how to guides on repairs and building, how to get from city to city, and a multitude of positive ways to learn and grow.
Internet research use is growing at a fast pace and consequently, is creating ethical dilemmas.
At the same time, it can be a way to link terrorists’ organizations, promote child pornography etc. As you can see, internet research can be used for the greater good, or to our detriment.
This is where the ethics comes into play, and guidelines are set up to monitor ethical issues which occur due to this process. Institutional Review Boards at institutions conducting this type of

Ensuring privacy of users of social networks is probably an unsolvable conundrum. At the same time, an informed use of the existing privacy options by the social network participants may alleviate - or even prevent - some of the more drastic privacy-averse incidents. Unfortunately, recent surveys show that an average user is either not aware of these options or does not use them, probably due to their perceived complexity. It is therefore reasonable to believe that tools assisting users with two tasks: 1) understanding their social net behaviour in terms of their privacy settings and broad privacy categories, and 2)recommending reasonable privacy options, will be a valuable tool for everyday privacy practice in a social
network context. This paper presents YourPrivacyProtector, a recommender system that shows how simple machine learning techniques may provide useful assistance in these two tasks to Facebook users. We support our claim with empirical results of application of YourPrivacyProtector to two groups of Facebook
users.

Abstract
The capacity to understand and control one’s personal data is now a crucial part of living in contemporary society. In this sense, traditional concerns over supporting the development of ‘digital literacy’ are now being usurped by concerns over citizens’ ‘data literacies’. In contrast to recent data safety and data science approaches, this article argues for a more critical form of ‘personal data literacies’ where digital data are understood as socially situated and context dependent. Drawing on the critical literacies tradition, the article outlines a range of salient socio-technical understandings of personal data generation and processing. Specifically, the article proposes a framework of ‘Personal Data Literacies’ that distinguishes five significant domains: (1) Data Identification, (2)
Data Understandings, (3) Data Reflexivity, (4) Data Uses, and (5) Data Tactics. The

High performance Serverless Java on AWS- GoTo Amsterdam 2024
Java is for many years one of the most popular programming languages, but it used to have hard times in the Serverless community. Java is known for its high cold start times and high memory footprint, comparing to other programming languages like Node.js and Python. In this talk I'll look at the general best practices and techniques we can use to decrease memory consumption, cold start times for Java Serverless development on AWS including GraalVM (Native Image) and AWS own offering SnapStart based on Firecracker microVM snapshot and restore and CRaC (Coordinated Restore at Checkpoint) runtime hooks. I'll also provide a lot of benchmarking on Lambda functions trying out various deployment package sizes, Lambda memory settings, Java compilation options and HTTP (a)synchronous clients and measure their impact on cold and warm start times.
