The future of design education:
world becomes the design studio

The future is an ideology that preserves colonial and imperialist
relations (Gonzatto et al, 2013). Design schools materialize it.

many futures, many worlds,
many studios... all connected
through solidarity practices.
Escobar (2018), de Sousa Santos (2018), Santos (2017)
Anthropophagic Studio at Faber-Ludens (2007-2011) and PUCPR
(2015-2019) (Van Amstel & Gonzatto, 2020).
Corais Platform is a digital anthropophagic studio, built with free
software and creative commons (Van Amstel & Gonzatto, 2016).
Corais has a growing wiki-style knowledge base and some sets
of card decks to encourage methodological diversity.
Corais Platform hosts more than 700 projects from social
movements, indigenous communities, and popular educators.
Futures of design education
should be locally grounded and
politically engaged to counter the
global North defuturing program.

  • 2. The future of design education: world becomes the design studio relations becomes the design material systems becomes the design object
  • 3. The future is an ideology that preserves colonial and imperialist relations (Gonzatto et al, 2013). Design schools materialize it. Ulm School of Design, Germany ESDI, Brazil NID, India
  • 4. The globalization project of the South aims to make room for many futures, many worlds, many studios... all connected through solidarity practices. Escobar (2018), de Sousa Santos (2018), Santos (2017)
  • 5. Anthropophagic Studio at Faber-Ludens (2007-2011) and PUCPR (2015-2019) (Van Amstel & Gonzatto, 2020).
  • 6. Corais Platform is a digital anthropophagic studio, built with free software and creative commons (Van Amstel & Gonzatto, 2016).
  • 7. Corais has a growing wiki-style knowledge base and some sets of card decks to encourage methodological diversity.
  • 8. Corais Platform hosts more than 700 projects from social movements, indigenous communities, and popular educators.
