2. Innovation and Entrepreneurship
• Innovations create/ open markets in industrially
advanced countries. Both technology buyer and
seller take technology risk. Technology is at growth
stage, licensing may take place even before
emergence of dominant standards/ design.
• There are more business opportunities in India for
proven technology. There are many technology
sellers of different kind. Technology is at maturity
stage. Major applications are also proven outside
India.

3. COVID Innovations
• India is ranked low in Innovation index,
patents, papers, university ranking etc.
• Innovation announcements are mostly limited
to Space.
• Spate of announcements `one innovation
every day’ during COVID phase surprised the
observers.
• Will this trend continue in `new normal’?
• Let us look at some of the COVID innovations.

5. 3Ms patented N95
N95 classification of
air filtration, meaning
that it filters at least
95% of airborne
particles. N95
respirators were
originally designed for
industrial use in
sectors such as mining,
construction, and
painting.

22. Enablers
This flood of innovations from Face masks to
testing have 5 enablers.
1. Standards, WTO & ICMR,
2. Testing and validation at DRDO and other
places,
3. Freedom to Operate from Patent perspective,
4. Local demand, especially public
procurement,
5. Capability to come with creative imitations,
catch up products in a speedy manner.
22
23. Entrepreneurial opportunities in new
normal
• The first 3 enablers, standards, certification,
freedom to operate are characteristics of
technology in maturity and for next decade we
will be operating in that space. That means there
are many global innovations that can be tapped
by local entrepreneurs.
• Demand for local innovations is related to state
policy and Indian governments ‘Atmanirbhar
Bharat’ is a booster.
• Even Imitation needs capabilities and India has
shown a glimpse of such capabilities.
• Entrepreneurs now take R&D institutes seriously.

24. Examples from India International
Innovation Fair 2017
• Researcher Raj Bhakta from USA exhibited
patented technology for printing electronics
on textiles at IIIF2017, Vizag. There are no
takers as technology is still
underdevelopment.
• Inventor Matic from Serbia displayed his light
weight aircraft at IIIF2017, Vizag and he
entered into business tie-up with Jaipur based
Kapny Airospace for air ambulance.

25. Recommendation
• For entrepreneurs to tap the vase number of
global innovations in a seamless, least
expensive way, a digital gateway is needed.
• Indian Innovators Association mooted an idea
of International Technology Bazaar and will be
happy to contribute.
