This document provides an overview of GitOps and summarizes a training session on the topic. The session covered Kubernetes and Git basics, the motivation and model for GitOps, an example of GitOps in action using Flux on a training environment, progressive delivery techniques like Flagger, and challenges with GitOps adoption. The goals were to explain what GitOps is, understand benefits, gain hands-on experience, and decide if it's right for a team/project. GitOps aims to use Git as the single source of truth for infrastructure and automate deployments by reconciling production with the code repository.

Today it’s all about delivering velocity without compromising on quality, yet it’s becoming increasingly difficult for organisations to keep up with the challenges of current release management and traditional operations. The demand for developers to own the end-to-end delivery, including operational ownership, is increasing. A “you build it, you own it” development process requires tools that developers know and understand. So I’d like to introduce “GitOps”- an agile software lifecycle for modern applications.
In this session, I will discuss these industry challenges, including current CICD trends and how they’re converging with operations and monitoring. I’ll also illustrate the GitOps model, identify best practices and tools to use, and explain how you can benefit from adopting this methodology inherited from best practices going back 10-15 years.

OPENING KEYNOTE:
The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) is an open source software foundation dedicated to making cloud native computing universal and sustainable. With over 300 members including the world’s largest public cloud and enterprise software companies, Alexis Richardson, CEO of Weaveworks and chair of the CNCF Technical Oversight Committee will walk you through some success stories, and why cloud native is the way forward. You’ll learn why Kubernetes and other CNCF projects have some of the fastest adoption rates in the history of open source, and how this is only the beginning.
Alexis will then show how you can increase speed and reliability in your development workflows even further by using the GitOps model, which has been developed at Weaveworks. You’ll learn about the core concepts of GitOps, including customer success stories, and how you can benefit from using this model.
More and more businesses are requiring developers to own end to end delivery, including operational ownership. Weaveworks will share with you what GitOps means, and how easy it is to create cloud native applications, CICD pipelines, integrate operations and more, using GitOps.
Inherited from best practices going back 10-15 years, cloud native is making these practices more relevant today. At Weaveworks, they implement these principles in their product, Weave Cloud. This not only helps customers ship apps faster, it also helps them run their own cloud native stack. This presentation will show how Weaveworks does this, identify best practices and tools, and showcase some of Weaveworks’ use cases.

Migrating from Self-Managed Kubernetes on EC2 to a GitOps Enabled EKSWeaveworks
Did your company start down the path of building a cloud native platform using Kubernetes with the goal of enabling developers to innovate faster and increase productivity, but then run into challenges keeping it operating in an optimal way?
In this session, Weaveworks will discuss how to migrate from self-managed Kubernetes on EC2 to a GitOps managed Shared Services Platform (SSP) on EKS. A SSP built on EKS and managed with Weave GitOps provides developers and operators with common workflows to update both applications and infrastructure. With every change in version control, full audit trails are available, and security is enforced. While at the same time enabling easier rollbacks and faster mean-time-to-recovery (MTTR). In short, a Weave GitOps managed SSP increases developer velocity while boosting stability.
How to operate a hybrid Kubernetes architecture, using managed EKS in the AWS Cloud and EKS-Distro on premises.
How to structure your infrastructure repository to efficiently manage multiple teams.
How to use Kubernetes RBAC to provide secure cluster multi-tenancy.
How to use GitOps to promote releases across a hybrid set of independent clusters.
How to accomplish data and operational sovereignty.

What does it really take to make sure your application is production ready?
With new privacy regulations being added, many aspects need to be taken into account when deciding when to deliver your final application is ready for production.
Can your application handle multiple users with different levels of access?
Can you extend your application to use existing authentication and authorization platforms?
Have you invested in using Mutual TLS for communication between components?
How do you manage the certificates and passwords used within your product?
Is CICD your friend or your enemy when it comes to delivering your product?
Have you considered the availability and scalability of the application?

How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.

v Challenges
6. Learning goals
• Being able to explain what GitOps is
• Know about the benefit of GitOps
• Having some hands-on experience with an example GitOps set up
• Being able to decide if GitOps is the right choice for team/project
19. What is GitOps?
GitOps is a standardized workflow for how to deploy, configure, monitor,
update and manage infrastructure-as-code
Core idea is having a Git repository that contains declarative
descriptions of the infrastructure desired in the production environment
and an automated process to make production environment match the
described state in the repository
20. What is GitOps?
• An operation model
• Derived from operation knowledge
• Technology agnostic
• A set of principles
• A way to speed up your team
21. GitOps: an operation model
Providing …
• A single source of truth for the
desired system’s state
• Separation of concerns between
development and deployment process
• Transparency and auditability
• Risk reduction (rollbacks)
22. Why should we care?
• Auditing and attribution
• Separation of concerns
• No crossing security boundary
• Process & constraints enforcement
• Great software ↔ human collaboration point
• Easy to validate for correctness (policies)
• System can self heal
34. 1 The entire system is described declaratively
2 The canonical desired system state is versioned (Git)
3 Approved changes to the desired state are
automatically applied to the system
4 Software agents ensure correctness
and alert on divergence
35. 1 The entire system is described declaratively
Beyond code, data ⇒
Implementation independent
Easy to abstract in simple ways
Easy to validate for correctness
Easy to generate & manipulate from code
37. The canonical desired system state is versioned (Git)
Canonical Source of Truth (DRY)
With declarative definition, trivialises rollbacks
Excellent security guarantees for auditing
Sophisticated approval processes
Great software ↔ human collaboration point
2
39. Approved changes to the desired state are
automatically applied to the system
Significant velocity gains
Privileged operators don’t cross security boundaries
Separates the What and the How

41. Software agents ensure correctness
and alert on divergence
4
Continuously checking that desired state is met
System can self-heal
Recovers from errors without intervention
(layer 8 issues)
It’s the control loop for your operations

46. Example workflow
• One Git branch for development:
• All developers can push changes there for testing purposes
• One Git branch for staging:
• Project lead or devops manager has ability to push/merge here for testing the
complete staged application
• One Git branch for production:
• The system operations manager is the only person to have push/merge
authorization here
52. So what actually happened?
1. We installed the Flux agent in our cluster
2. We added the agent key to our repository, so that it can read and
write the configuration
3. We configured the agent to watch to our repository
4. The agent noticed some manifests in the repository, and
automatically applied them
5. Kubernetes deployed the manifests
54. What is progressive delivery?
Progressive Delivery is Continuous Delivery with fine-grained control
over the blast radius, requiring:
• CI pipeline that produces immutable build artifacts
• CD pipeline designed for desired state reconciliation
• Smart routing for user facing apps and service to service
communication
• Observability (performance stats + business metrics)
• Fail fast mentality
55. Flagger
Flagger is a Kubernetes operator that automates the promotion of
canary deployments using App Mesh, Istio, Gloo or NGINX routing for
traffic shifting and Prometheus metrics for canary analysis.
Flagger implements a control loop that gradually shifts traffic to the
canary while measuring key performance indicators. Based on the KPIs
analysis a canary is promoted or aborted.
61. Recap: GitOps CI/CD
• Git is our single source of truth
• Deployments and rollback are all done via Git
• Auditing built-in
• Having separate pipelines for CI and CD enables better security
• Automated the deployment
• It’s easier to deal with if a deployment goes wrong
