Get Up and Go! Ingredient List:

Dandelion leaf/root - Dandelion contains luteolin, an antioxidant, and has demonstrated antioxidant
properties without cytotoxicity.

Ginger Root - The medical form of ginger historically was called "Jamaica ginger"; it was classified as
a stimulant and carminative, and used frequently for dyspepsia and colic. It was also frequently employed
to disguise the taste of medicines. Ginger is on the FDA's 'generally recognized as safe' list, though it does
interact with some medications, including warfarin. Ginger is contraindicated in people suffering from
gallstones as the herb promotes the release of bile from the gallbladder. Ginger may also decrease joint pain
from arthritis, though studies on this have been inconsistent, and may have blood thinning and cholesterol
lowering properties that may make it useful for treating heart disease. Ginger compounds are active against
a form of diarrhea which is the leading cause of infant death in developing countries. Zingerone is likely to
be the active constituent against enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli heat-labile enterotoxin-induced diarrhea.
Ginger has been found effective in multiple studies for treating nausea caused by seasickness, morning
sickness and chemotherapy, though ginger was not found superior over a placebo for post-operative nausea.
A variety of uses are suggested for ginger. Tea brewed from ginger is a folk remedy for colds. Three to four
leaves of Tulsi taken along with a piece of ginger on an empty stomach is an effective cure for congestion,
cough and cold. Ginger ale and ginger beer have been recommended as "stomach settlers" for generations
in countries where the beverages are made, and ginger water was commonly used to avoid heat cramps in
the US. Ginger has also been historically used to treat inflammation, which several scientific studies
support, though one arthritis trial showed ginger to be no better than a placebo or ibuprofen. Research on
rats suggests that ginger may be useful for treating diabetes. In the West, powdered dried ginger root is
made into capsules and sold in pharmacies for medicinal use.In Burma, ginger and a local sweetener made
from palm tree juice (Htan nyat) are boiled together and taken to prevent the flu. In China, a drink made
with sliced ginger cooked in sweetened water or a cola is used as a folk medicine for the common cold. In
the Congo, ginger is crushed and mixed with mango tree sap to make tangawisi juice, which is considered a
panacea. In India, ginger is applied as a paste to the temples to relieve headache and consumed when
suffering from the common cold, people use ginger for making tea, in food etc. In Indonesia, a type of
ginger known as Jahe is used as a herbal preparation to reduce fatigue, reducing "winds" in the blood,
prevent and cure rheumatism and controlling poor dietary habits. In the Philippines a traditional health
drink called "salabat" is made for breakfast by boiling chopped ginger and adding sugar; it is considered
good for a sore throat. In the United States, ginger is used to prevent motion and morning sickness. It is
recognized as safe by the Food and Drug Administration and is sold as an unregulated dietary supplement.

Gotu Kola- Gotu kola is a mild adaptogen, is mildly antibacterial, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, anti-
ulcerogenic, anxiolytic, a cerebral tonic, a circulatory stimulant, a diuretic, nervine and vulnerary. When
eaten raw as a salad leaf, pegaga is thought to help maintain youthfulness. In Thailand cups with gotu kola
leaves are used as an afternoon pick me up. A decoction of juice from the leaves is thought to relieve
hypertension. This juice is also used as a general tonic for good health. A poultice of the leaves is also used
to treat open sores.

Ashwaganda - In Ayurveda ashwaganda is considered a rasayana herb. This herb is also considered an
adaptogen which is an herb that works to normalize physiological function, working on the HPA axis and
the neuroendocrine system. Fruits, leaves and seeds of the Indian medicinal plant withania somnifera have
been traditionally used for the Ayurvedic system as aphrodisiacs, diuretics and for treating memory loss.
The New England Deaconess Hospital, has taken a patent on an Ashwagandha formulation claimed to
alleviate symptoms associated with arthritis.

Siberian Ginseng - Eleutherococcus senticosus is an adaptogen which has a wide range of health
benefits attributed to its use. E. senticosus contains eleutherosides, triterpenoid saponins which are
lipophilic and which can fit into hormone receptors. Supporters of E. senticosus as medicine claim it
possesses a variety of medicinal properties, such as:

     increased endurance
     memory improvement
     anti-inflammatory
     immunogenic
     chemoprotective
     radiological protection

Eleutherococcus senticosis is more tonifying than the true Ginsengs (Panax sp). It is neutral energetically
and so is appropriate for daily use. Taken regularly, it enhances immune function, decreases cortisol levels
and inflammatory response, and it promotes improved cognitive and physical performance]. In human
studies Eleuthero has been successfully used to treat bone marrow suppression caused by chemotherapy or
radiation, angina, hypercholesterolemia, and neurasthenia with headache, insomnia, and poor appetite.

Interactions and side effects

 People with medicated high blood pressure should consult their doctor before taking E. senticosus
as it may reduce their need for medication.
 E. senticosus may cause light sleep in some people, principally those who are "wired". Users are
recommended not to take it in the evening.
 E. senticosus will enhance the effectiveness of mycin class antibiotics.
 E. senticosus when purchased from non-GMP sources has occasionally been adulterated with
Periploca graeca which can potentiate digoxin or similar drugs: however this is not an interaction
         of E. senticosus.

Chamomile - German chamomile is used medicinally against sore stomach, irritable bowel syndrome,
and as a gentle sleep aid. It can also aid in the assistance of defecation. It can be taken as an herbal tea, two
teaspoons of dried flower per cup of tea. For a sore stomach, some recommend taking a cup every morning
without food for two to three months. It is also used as a mouthwash against oral mucositis. It has
acaricidal properties against certain mites, such as Psoroptes cuniculi. The primary known active ingredient
of the essential oil from German chamomile is the terpene bisabolol. Other active ingredients include
chamazulene, flavonoids (including apigenin, quercetin, patuletin and luteolin) and coumarin.[

A 2006 review of the medical literature reported a number of beneficial effects for chamomile in in vitro
and animal tests, but added that more human clinical trials are needed before firm conclusions can be
drawn. Research with animals suggests antispasmodic, anxiolytic, antiinflammatory and some
antimutagenic and cholesterol-lowering effects for chamomile. Chamomile has sped healing time of
wounds in animals. It also showed some benefit in an animal model of diabetes. In vitro chamomile has
demonstrated moderate antimicrobial and antioxidant properties and significant antiplatelet activity, as well
as preliminary results against cancer. Essential oil of chamomile was shown to be a promising antiviral
agent against herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) in vitro. Potential risks include interference with
warfarin and infant botulism in very young children. Chamomile is a relative of ragweed and can cause
allergy symptoms and can cross-react with ragweed pollen in individuals with ragweed allergies. It also
contains coumarin and thus care should be taken to avoid potential drug interactions, e.g. with blood
thinners. While extremely rare, very large doses of Chamomile may cause nausea and vomiting. Even more
rarely, rashes may occur. An type-IV allergic reaction with severe anaphylaxis has been reported in a 38-
year old man who drank chamomile tea.

Nettles - Nettle is believed to be a galactagogue[2] and a clinical trial has shown that the juice is diuretic
in patients with congestive heart failure. Extracts can be used to treat arthritis, anemia, hay fever, kidney
problems, and pain. Nettle leaf is a herb that has a long tradition of use as an adjuvant remedy in the
treatment of arthritis in Germany. Nettle leaf extract contains active compounds that reduce TNF-α and
other inflammatory cytokines. It is also said to be high in Vitamin K and rich of Calcium and Iron.

Boswellia - Boswellia has long been used in Ayurvedic medicine. Recently, the boswellic acids that are a
component of the resin it produces have shown some promise as a treatment for asthma and various
inflammatory conditions (Gupta I, Gupta V, Parihar A, et al. Effects of Boswellia serrata gum resin in
patients with bronchial asthma: results of a double-blind, placebo-controlled, 6-week clinical study.
European Journal of Herbal Medicine 1998; 3:511-14.) In West Africa, the bark of Boswellia dalzielii is
used to treat fever, rheumatism and gastrointestinal problems. Boswellia incense may even relieve
depression.

Cat’s Claw - U. tomentosa is used in nootropic drugs, as well as in treatment of cancer and HIV
infection. It contains several alkaloids that are responsible for its overall medical effects, as well as tannins
and various phytochemicals. The chemotype of the plant determines the dominant type of alkaloid it
produces, and thus its properties in vivo. One chemotype has roots which produce mostly the pentacyclic
alkaloids that are responsible for the immune-strengthening effects desired by most consumers. Some
ingredients appear to act as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anticancer agents. As an herbal treatment,
Cat's Claw is used to treat intestinal ailments such as Crohn's disease, gastric ulcers and tumors, parasites,
colitis, gastritis, diverticulitis and leaky bowel syndrome, while manufacturers claim that U. tomentosa can
also be used in the treatment of AIDS in combination with AZT, the treatment and prevention of arthritis
and rheumatism, diabetes, PMS, chronic fatigue syndrome, prostate conditions, immune modulation, Lyme
disease and systemic lupus erythematosus. A 2005 review of the scholarly literature on Cat's Claw indicates
there is supporting evidence toward its use in treating cancer, inflammation, viral infection and vascular
conditions, and for its use as an immunostimulant, antioxidant, antibacterial and CNS-related agent. It has
also been shown to be a powerful MAO-B inhibitor.

Marshmallow Root - In herbalism mallow is used as a gargle to treat mouth and throat ulcers. It is
also useful for gastric ulcers.

The flowers and young leaves can be eaten. They are often added to salads or boiled and fried. They are
also used in cosmetics for the skin.

The root has been used since Egyptian antiquity in a honey-sweetened confection useful in the treatment of
sore throat.

Solomon’s Seal - Revolving primarily around the root, "Solomon's Seal" are traditionally used in a
range of afflictions from menopause to broken bones. As a topical application, the root are said to expedite
the healing of cuts and bruises, skin irritations and inflammations, and as a face wash is good for acne,
blemishes and all kinds of imperfections of the skin. When consumed as a tea, it is said to alleviate a range
of symptoms associated with menopause, indigestion, diabetes, broken bones, insomnia, kidney pains, and
even infertility.
Its use to fight diabetes was first observed in 1930 by Langecker. After experiments, he concluded that it
was effective in fighting nutritional hyperglycemia, though not that caused by adrenaline release, probably
due to its content in glucokinin.

Kelp – In Europe and North America, many claims have been made for the effectiveness of seaweeds on
human health. It has been suggested, amongst other things, that seaweeds have curative powers for
tuberculosis, arthritis, colds and influenza, worm infestations, and may even improve one's attractiveness to
the opposite sex. Digenea (Ceramiales; Rhodophya) produces an effective vermifugal agent (kainic acid).
Recently, aqueous extracts from two red algae of the family Dumontiaceae have been found to inhibit the
herpes simplex virus but no tests have been carried out on humans. Carrageenans have been patented as
anti-viral agents. Many of the reported medicinal effects of marine algae have not been substantiated.
Corallina is being used used in bone-replacement therapy. Stein & Borden (1984) provide an extensive
review.

 Some kelps may have polysaccharides that may reduce the incidence of breast cancer.

Is rich in Iodine. Over consumption of iodine, can cause hypertrophy of thyroid gland. An iodine
deficiency can slow body growth and development.

     potassium 6100mg
     calcium 710mg
     iron 3.9mg
     carotene 1100µg
     vitaminB1 0.48mg
     vitaminB2 0.37mg
     dietary fiber 27.1g
     energy 145kcal (per 100gram)
 promote of the thyroid gland hormone
     blood pressure is lowered
     effect for intestinal disorders
     cholesterol is lowered
 prevent a sudden rise of the blood sugar level

Turmeric - In Ayurvedic practices, turmeric is thought to have many medicinal properties and many in
South Asia (particularly India) use it as a readily available antiseptic for cuts, burns and bruises.
Practitioners of Ayurvedic medicine say it has fluoride which is thought to be essential for teeth. It is also
used as an antibacterial agent.

It is taken in some Asian countries as a dietary supplement, which allegedly helps with stomach problems
and other ailments. It is popular as a tea in Okinawa, Japan. Pakistanis also use it as an anti-inflammatory
agent, and remedy for gastrointestinal discomfort associated with irritable bowel syndrome, and other
digestive disorders. In Afghanistan and North West Pakistan, turmeric is applied to a piece of burnt cloth,
and placed over a wound to cleanse and stimulate recovery. Indians, in addition to its Ayurvedic properties,
use turmeric in a wide variety of skin creams that are also exported to neighboring countries. It is currently
being investigated for possible benefits in Alzheimer's disease, cancer and liver disorders.
It is only in recent years that Western scientists have increasingly recognised the medicinal properties of
turmeric. In the latter half of the 20th century, curcumin was identified as responsible for most of the
biological effects of turmeric. According to a 2005 article in the Wall Street Journal, research activity into
curcumin is exploding. In that year supplement sales increased 35% from 2004, and the U.S. National
Institutes of Health had four clinical trials underway to study curcumin treatment for pancreatic cancer,
multiple myeloma, Alzheimer's, and colorectal cancer.

Licorice Root - Powdered liquorice root is an effective expectorant, and has been used for this purpose
since ancient times, especially in Ayurvedic medicine where it is also used in tooth powders and is known
as Jastimadhu. Modern cough syrups often include liquorice extract as an ingredient. Additionally,
liquorice may be useful in conventional and naturopathic medicine for both mouth ulcers and peptic ulcers.
Non-prescription aphthous ulcer treatment CankerMelts incorporates glycyrrhiza in a dissolving adherent
troche. Liquorice is also a mild laxative and may be used as a topical antiviral agent for shingles,
ophthalmic, oral or genital herpes. Liquorice affects the body's endocrine system as it contains isoflavones
(phytoestrogens). It can lower the amount of serum testosterone,[12] but whether it affects the amount of
free testosterone is unclear. Consuming licorice can prevent hyperkalemia. Large doses of glycyrrhizinic
acid and glycyrrhetinic acid in liquorice extract can lead to hypokalemia and serious increases in blood
pressure, a syndrome known as apparent mineralocorticoid excess. These side effects stem from the
inhibition of the enzyme 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (type 2) and subsequent increase in activity of
cortisol on the kidney. 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase normally inactivates cortisol in the kidney; thus,
liquorice's inhibition of this enzyme makes the concentration of cortisol appear to increase. Cortisol acts at
the same receptor as the hormone aldosterone in the kidney and the effects mimic aldosterone excess,
although aldosterone remains low or normal during liquorice overdose. To decrease the chances of these
serious side effects, deglycyrrhizinated liquorice preparations are available. The disabling of similar
enzymes in the gut by glycyrrhizinic acid and glycyrrhetinic acid also causes increased mucus and
decreased acid secretion. It inhibits Helicobacter pylori, is used as an aid for healing stomach and duodenal
ulcers, and in moderate amounts may soothe an upset stomach. Liquorice can be used to treat ileitis, leaky
gut syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn's disease as it is antispasmodic in the bowels.
Liquorice is an adaptogen which helps reregulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. It can also be
used for auto-immune conditions including lupus, scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis and animal dander
allergies.
In traditional Chinese medicine, liquorice is commonly used in herbal formulae to "harmonize" the other
ingredients in the formula and to carry the formula into all 12 of the regular meridians and to relieve a
spasmodic cough.
In traditional American herbalism it is used in the Hoxsey anti-cancer formula.
The compounded carbenoxolone is derived from liquorice. Studies indicate it may inhibit an enzyme in the
brain that is involved in making stress-related hormones, which have been associated with age-related
mental decline.

In a base of sweet vegetable glycerine.

  • 1. For more details visit: http://www.ashwagandha.tk Get Up and Go! Ingredient List: Dandelion leaf/root - Dandelion contains luteolin, an antioxidant, and has demonstrated antioxidant properties without cytotoxicity. Ginger Root - The medical form of ginger historically was called "Jamaica ginger"; it was classified as a stimulant and carminative, and used frequently for dyspepsia and colic. It was also frequently employed to disguise the taste of medicines. Ginger is on the FDA's 'generally recognized as safe' list, though it does interact with some medications, including warfarin. Ginger is contraindicated in people suffering from gallstones as the herb promotes the release of bile from the gallbladder. Ginger may also decrease joint pain from arthritis, though studies on this have been inconsistent, and may have blood thinning and cholesterol lowering properties that may make it useful for treating heart disease. Ginger compounds are active against a form of diarrhea which is the leading cause of infant death in developing countries. Zingerone is likely to be the active constituent against enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli heat-labile enterotoxin-induced diarrhea. Ginger has been found effective in multiple studies for treating nausea caused by seasickness, morning sickness and chemotherapy, though ginger was not found superior over a placebo for post-operative nausea. A variety of uses are suggested for ginger. Tea brewed from ginger is a folk remedy for colds. Three to four leaves of Tulsi taken along with a piece of ginger on an empty stomach is an effective cure for congestion, cough and cold. Ginger ale and ginger beer have been recommended as "stomach settlers" for generations in countries where the beverages are made, and ginger water was commonly used to avoid heat cramps in the US. Ginger has also been historically used to treat inflammation, which several scientific studies support, though one arthritis trial showed ginger to be no better than a placebo or ibuprofen. Research on rats suggests that ginger may be useful for treating diabetes. In the West, powdered dried ginger root is made into capsules and sold in pharmacies for medicinal use.In Burma, ginger and a local sweetener made from palm tree juice (Htan nyat) are boiled together and taken to prevent the flu. In China, a drink made with sliced ginger cooked in sweetened water or a cola is used as a folk medicine for the common cold. In the Congo, ginger is crushed and mixed with mango tree sap to make tangawisi juice, which is considered a panacea. In India, ginger is applied as a paste to the temples to relieve headache and consumed when suffering from the common cold, people use ginger for making tea, in food etc. In Indonesia, a type of ginger known as Jahe is used as a herbal preparation to reduce fatigue, reducing "winds" in the blood, prevent and cure rheumatism and controlling poor dietary habits. In the Philippines a traditional health drink called "salabat" is made for breakfast by boiling chopped ginger and adding sugar; it is considered good for a sore throat. In the United States, ginger is used to prevent motion and morning sickness. It is recognized as safe by the Food and Drug Administration and is sold as an unregulated dietary supplement. Gotu Kola- Gotu kola is a mild adaptogen, is mildly antibacterial, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, anti- ulcerogenic, anxiolytic, a cerebral tonic, a circulatory stimulant, a diuretic, nervine and vulnerary. When eaten raw as a salad leaf, pegaga is thought to help maintain youthfulness. In Thailand cups with gotu kola leaves are used as an afternoon pick me up. A decoction of juice from the leaves is thought to relieve hypertension. This juice is also used as a general tonic for good health. A poultice of the leaves is also used to treat open sores. Ashwaganda - In Ayurveda ashwaganda is considered a rasayana herb. This herb is also considered an adaptogen which is an herb that works to normalize physiological function, working on the HPA axis and the neuroendocrine system. Fruits, leaves and seeds of the Indian medicinal plant withania somnifera have been traditionally used for the Ayurvedic system as aphrodisiacs, diuretics and for treating memory loss.
  • 2. The New England Deaconess Hospital, has taken a patent on an Ashwagandha formulation claimed to alleviate symptoms associated with arthritis. Siberian Ginseng - Eleutherococcus senticosus is an adaptogen which has a wide range of health benefits attributed to its use. E. senticosus contains eleutherosides, triterpenoid saponins which are lipophilic and which can fit into hormone receptors. Supporters of E. senticosus as medicine claim it possesses a variety of medicinal properties, such as:  increased endurance  memory improvement  anti-inflammatory  immunogenic  chemoprotective  radiological protection Eleutherococcus senticosis is more tonifying than the true Ginsengs (Panax sp). It is neutral energetically and so is appropriate for daily use. Taken regularly, it enhances immune function, decreases cortisol levels and inflammatory response, and it promotes improved cognitive and physical performance]. In human studies Eleuthero has been successfully used to treat bone marrow suppression caused by chemotherapy or radiation, angina, hypercholesterolemia, and neurasthenia with headache, insomnia, and poor appetite. Interactions and side effects  People with medicated high blood pressure should consult their doctor before taking E. senticosus as it may reduce their need for medication.  E. senticosus may cause light sleep in some people, principally those who are "wired". Users are recommended not to take it in the evening.  E. senticosus will enhance the effectiveness of mycin class antibiotics.  E. senticosus when purchased from non-GMP sources has occasionally been adulterated with Periploca graeca which can potentiate digoxin or similar drugs: however this is not an interaction of E. senticosus. Chamomile - German chamomile is used medicinally against sore stomach, irritable bowel syndrome, and as a gentle sleep aid. It can also aid in the assistance of defecation. It can be taken as an herbal tea, two teaspoons of dried flower per cup of tea. For a sore stomach, some recommend taking a cup every morning without food for two to three months. It is also used as a mouthwash against oral mucositis. It has acaricidal properties against certain mites, such as Psoroptes cuniculi. The primary known active ingredient of the essential oil from German chamomile is the terpene bisabolol. Other active ingredients include chamazulene, flavonoids (including apigenin, quercetin, patuletin and luteolin) and coumarin.[ A 2006 review of the medical literature reported a number of beneficial effects for chamomile in in vitro and animal tests, but added that more human clinical trials are needed before firm conclusions can be drawn. Research with animals suggests antispasmodic, anxiolytic, antiinflammatory and some antimutagenic and cholesterol-lowering effects for chamomile. Chamomile has sped healing time of wounds in animals. It also showed some benefit in an animal model of diabetes. In vitro chamomile has demonstrated moderate antimicrobial and antioxidant properties and significant antiplatelet activity, as well as preliminary results against cancer. Essential oil of chamomile was shown to be a promising antiviral agent against herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) in vitro. Potential risks include interference with warfarin and infant botulism in very young children. Chamomile is a relative of ragweed and can cause allergy symptoms and can cross-react with ragweed pollen in individuals with ragweed allergies. It also contains coumarin and thus care should be taken to avoid potential drug interactions, e.g. with blood
  • 3. thinners. While extremely rare, very large doses of Chamomile may cause nausea and vomiting. Even more rarely, rashes may occur. An type-IV allergic reaction with severe anaphylaxis has been reported in a 38- year old man who drank chamomile tea. Nettles - Nettle is believed to be a galactagogue[2] and a clinical trial has shown that the juice is diuretic in patients with congestive heart failure. Extracts can be used to treat arthritis, anemia, hay fever, kidney problems, and pain. Nettle leaf is a herb that has a long tradition of use as an adjuvant remedy in the treatment of arthritis in Germany. Nettle leaf extract contains active compounds that reduce TNF-α and other inflammatory cytokines. It is also said to be high in Vitamin K and rich of Calcium and Iron. Boswellia - Boswellia has long been used in Ayurvedic medicine. Recently, the boswellic acids that are a component of the resin it produces have shown some promise as a treatment for asthma and various inflammatory conditions (Gupta I, Gupta V, Parihar A, et al. Effects of Boswellia serrata gum resin in patients with bronchial asthma: results of a double-blind, placebo-controlled, 6-week clinical study. European Journal of Herbal Medicine 1998; 3:511-14.) In West Africa, the bark of Boswellia dalzielii is used to treat fever, rheumatism and gastrointestinal problems. Boswellia incense may even relieve depression. Cat’s Claw - U. tomentosa is used in nootropic drugs, as well as in treatment of cancer and HIV infection. It contains several alkaloids that are responsible for its overall medical effects, as well as tannins and various phytochemicals. The chemotype of the plant determines the dominant type of alkaloid it produces, and thus its properties in vivo. One chemotype has roots which produce mostly the pentacyclic alkaloids that are responsible for the immune-strengthening effects desired by most consumers. Some ingredients appear to act as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anticancer agents. As an herbal treatment, Cat's Claw is used to treat intestinal ailments such as Crohn's disease, gastric ulcers and tumors, parasites, colitis, gastritis, diverticulitis and leaky bowel syndrome, while manufacturers claim that U. tomentosa can also be used in the treatment of AIDS in combination with AZT, the treatment and prevention of arthritis and rheumatism, diabetes, PMS, chronic fatigue syndrome, prostate conditions, immune modulation, Lyme disease and systemic lupus erythematosus. A 2005 review of the scholarly literature on Cat's Claw indicates there is supporting evidence toward its use in treating cancer, inflammation, viral infection and vascular conditions, and for its use as an immunostimulant, antioxidant, antibacterial and CNS-related agent. It has also been shown to be a powerful MAO-B inhibitor. Marshmallow Root - In herbalism mallow is used as a gargle to treat mouth and throat ulcers. It is also useful for gastric ulcers. The flowers and young leaves can be eaten. They are often added to salads or boiled and fried. They are also used in cosmetics for the skin. The root has been used since Egyptian antiquity in a honey-sweetened confection useful in the treatment of sore throat. Solomon’s Seal - Revolving primarily around the root, "Solomon's Seal" are traditionally used in a range of afflictions from menopause to broken bones. As a topical application, the root are said to expedite the healing of cuts and bruises, skin irritations and inflammations, and as a face wash is good for acne, blemishes and all kinds of imperfections of the skin. When consumed as a tea, it is said to alleviate a range of symptoms associated with menopause, indigestion, diabetes, broken bones, insomnia, kidney pains, and even infertility.
  • 4. Its use to fight diabetes was first observed in 1930 by Langecker. After experiments, he concluded that it was effective in fighting nutritional hyperglycemia, though not that caused by adrenaline release, probably due to its content in glucokinin. Kelp – In Europe and North America, many claims have been made for the effectiveness of seaweeds on human health. It has been suggested, amongst other things, that seaweeds have curative powers for tuberculosis, arthritis, colds and influenza, worm infestations, and may even improve one's attractiveness to the opposite sex. Digenea (Ceramiales; Rhodophya) produces an effective vermifugal agent (kainic acid). Recently, aqueous extracts from two red algae of the family Dumontiaceae have been found to inhibit the herpes simplex virus but no tests have been carried out on humans. Carrageenans have been patented as anti-viral agents. Many of the reported medicinal effects of marine algae have not been substantiated. Corallina is being used used in bone-replacement therapy. Stein & Borden (1984) provide an extensive review.  Some kelps may have polysaccharides that may reduce the incidence of breast cancer. Is rich in Iodine. Practitioners of Ayurvedic medicine say it has fluoride which is thought to be essential for teeth. It is also used as an antibacterial agent. It is taken in some Asian countries as a dietary supplement, which allegedly helps with stomach problems and other ailments. It is popular as a tea in Okinawa, Japan. Pakistanis also use it as an anti-inflammatory agent, and remedy for gastrointestinal discomfort associated with irritable bowel syndrome, and other digestive disorders. In Afghanistan and North West Pakistan, turmeric is applied to a piece of burnt cloth, and placed over a wound to cleanse and stimulate recovery. Indians, in addition to its Ayurvedic properties, use turmeric in a wide variety of skin creams that are also exported to neighboring countries. It is currently being investigated for possible benefits in Alzheimer's disease, cancer and liver disorders.
  • 5. It is only in recent years that Western scientists have increasingly recognised the medicinal properties of turmeric. In the latter half of the 20th century, curcumin was identified as responsible for most of the biological effects of turmeric. According to a 2005 article in the Wall Street Journal, research activity into curcumin is exploding. In that year supplement sales increased 35% from 2004, and the U.S. National Institutes of Health had four clinical trials underway to study curcumin treatment for pancreatic cancer, multiple myeloma, Alzheimer's, and colorectal cancer. Licorice Root - Powdered liquorice root is an effective expectorant, and has been used for this purpose since ancient times, especially in Ayurvedic medicine where it is also used in tooth powders and is known as Jastimadhu. Modern cough syrups often include liquorice extract as an ingredient. Additionally, liquorice may be useful in conventional and naturopathic medicine for both mouth ulcers and peptic ulcers. Non-prescription aphthous ulcer treatment CankerMelts incorporates glycyrrhiza in a dissolving adherent troche. Liquorice is also a mild laxative and may be used as a topical antiviral agent for shingles, ophthalmic, oral or genital herpes. Liquorice affects the body's endocrine system as it contains isoflavones (phytoestrogens). It can lower the amount of serum testosterone,[12] but whether it affects the amount of free testosterone is unclear. Consuming licorice can prevent hyperkalemia. Large doses of glycyrrhizinic acid and glycyrrhetinic acid in liquorice extract can lead to hypokalemia and serious increases in blood pressure, a syndrome known as apparent mineralocorticoid excess. These side effects stem from the inhibition of the enzyme 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (type 2) and subsequent increase in activity of cortisol on the kidney. 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase normally inactivates cortisol in the kidney; thus, liquorice's inhibition of this enzyme makes the concentration of cortisol appear to increase. Cortisol acts at the same receptor as the hormone aldosterone in the kidney and the effects mimic aldosterone excess, although aldosterone remains low or normal during liquorice overdose. To decrease the chances of these serious side effects, deglycyrrhizinated liquorice preparations are available. The disabling of similar enzymes in the gut by glycyrrhizinic acid and glycyrrhetinic acid also causes increased mucus and decreased acid secretion. It inhibits Helicobacter pylori, is used as an aid for healing stomach and duodenal ulcers, and in moderate amounts may soothe an upset stomach. Liquorice can be used to treat ileitis, leaky gut syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn's disease as it is antispasmodic in the bowels. Liquorice is an adaptogen which helps reregulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. It can also be used for auto-immune conditions including lupus, scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis and animal dander allergies. In traditional Chinese medicine, liquorice is commonly used in herbal formulae to "harmonize" the other ingredients in the formula and to carry the formula into all 12 of the regular meridians and to relieve a spasmodic cough. In traditional American herbalism it is used in the Hoxsey anti-cancer formula. The compounded carbenoxolone is derived from liquorice. Studies indicate it may inhibit an enzyme in the brain that is involved in making stress-related hormones, which have been associated with age-related mental decline.
