2. Early Years
● George was born on July 12, 1864 in Diamond Grove,
Missouri.
● In 1874 he left the farm where he was born and
eventually settled in Minneapolis, Kansas. He had to
move because there were no schools for blacks.
●When he was young he like to garden and take care of
plants. People around him call him the plant doctor.
●George would spend his days wandering the fields and
meadows, learning about different plants.
3. College Years
●George left Missouri at an early age to start a college career.
●1890: George enrolled at Simpson College to study piano and art, but had to
withdraw because of his race.
● Transferred to Iowa State Agricultural College, where in 1894 he
earned a Bachelor’s in Agriculture.
● 1896: Earned a Master’s of Agriculture degree from Iowa State Agricultural
College.
