George Washington was chosen to lead the Continental Army due to his surveyor experience which gave him knowledge of Virginia's terrain, prior military command experience during the French and Indian War, and his leadership of the Patriot cause in Virginia. As commander, Washington faced difficulties including a lack of supplies and harsh conditions at Valley Forge, but was able to achieve a decisive victory over the British at Yorktown through combined American and French forces. After the war, Washington was unanimously elected the first President of the United States and set many precedents for the office before retiring after two terms.
