Geocaching involves using a GPS device to locate hidden containers called caches around the world. There are over 1.3 million active geocaches globally. Geocaching promotes environmental stewardship and getting outdoors for people of all ages. Different types of caches include traditional caches which can vary in size and location, multicaches which involve finding multiple stages, virtual caches viewed online, puzzle caches requiring solving clues, webcam caches possibly watched remotely, and Earth caches linking to educational information about locations.

A presentation pulled together some time ago to be used to help educate about geocaching in northern New Jersey. It was intended to be broadly shared.
The content was not all created by NNJC and, in many cases, pulled from other presentations which offered to share content. Sources noted have created the content displayed on the slide where the notation occurs.
Geocaching is a healthy and inexpensive way to get the whole family outdoors, energized and pulling together toward a common goal. There are more than three million active geocachers worldwide and more than one million geocaches hidden around the globe. This presentation by the co-author of the 2010 book The Joy of Geocaching explains the fundamentals of the game and shows why it inspires such enthusiasm among its players.

Editor's Notes
A multicache is similar to a traditional except that you do not find the cache at the first coordinates. You may have to go to 4 or 5 different places to get to the final destination.
A virtual cache is a cache that exists in a form of a location. Depending on the cache "hider," a virtual cache could be to answer a question about a location, an interesting spot, a task, etc. The reward for these caches is the location itself and sharing information about your visit. Because of the nature of these geocaches, you must actually visit the location and acquire the coordinates there before you can post. In addition, although many locations are interesting, a virtual cache should be out of the ordinary enough to warrant logging a visit.
These are caches that use existing web cameras placed by individuals or agencies that monitor various areas like parks or road conditions. The idea is to get yourself in front of the camera to log your visit. The challenging part, however, it that you need to call a friend to look up the web site that displays the camera shot. You will need to have them to save the picture to log the cache.
An EarthCache is a special place that people can visit to learn about a unique geoscience feature or aspect of our Earth. EarthCaches include a set of educational notes and the details about where to find the location (latitude and longitude). Visitors to EarthCaches can see how our planet has been shaped by geological processes, how we manage the resources and how scientists gather evidence to learn about the Earth.
