Horror
The genre of horror usually begins with music to set the scene, the music used
is usually intense and builds suspense with sound effects used being very
sudden in order to scare the audience. Popular instruments used are usually
violins as they are successful at building suspense. The scene is usually set in
an eerie place to give a sense of mystery, popular settings used are graveyards
or churches or haunted houses not only because they are scary but they also
make the audience have an idea what is going to happen in the film, compared
to if it was set in a place like Disney world it wouldn’t have the same sort of
scary effect. Depending on what kind of horror film it is the props vary, from
different weapons to innocent things that are supposedly made evil to
contrast the horror theme. Specific characters used include the people who
have no idea what is happening or in other words the victims, the one who
knows the secrets behind ‘strange happenings’ and the villain of the piece
which is usually identified by his clothing or his voice or another strange
characteristics. All these features together form a horror genre.

Examples of the horror Genre
The genre of romance is usually filled with happy music with very calming instruments
like an acoustic guitar or piano to set the right kind of mood as high pitched violins
wouldn’t really set a happy atmosphere and would send the wrong message to the
audience. In a romance genre, pretty much the same characters are used in each film.
For example, the nerdy girl/boy who isn’t noticed much and the super popular guy/girl
who is loved by everyone as well as the supportive friends or the enemy (usually being
an ex-girlfriend/boyfriend) trying to split them up again. Popular locations tend to be
in places like high school or college where there a lot of people around and social
standards are set high which is why we get the ‘outcast’ characters, sometimes
locations are set in remote areas with shots where it is just the two people together to
demonstrate that only they matter. Props in romance films are very mediocre, like the
jewellery given to the significant other or love letters written to each person to cause
mystery within the love triangle in the film. All these features put together for the
entertaining Romance genre.

Examples of the romance Genre
Similar to horror films, when it comes to music, it’s all about building suspense so
again the use of violins is popular but also drumbeats like a heartbeat which is
another successful way to build suspense. And the same rule applies that the use of
happy music isn’t usually used as the audience gets the wrong idea. What I like about
thriller is that it could be set anywhere, but most popular places like police stations
or other haunting places like abandoned building so it creates some mystery to what
happened for the audience to find out. Specific characters include the main character
who is usually stressed out or troubled so the audience sympathises with him/her,
the victim who has usually been kidnapped or isn’t present through most of the film
so it’s a mystery to the audience where/who they are and finally the dark horse who
the audience didn’t expect that they would do something that would affect everyone
so its a surprise. In thriller, there are no specific props used but there will always be a
key prop in thrillers that have a key significance in the rest of the film which the
audience is able to recognise with close up camera angles .

For my chosen Genre I have decided to pick Thriller as to me you can do a lot with it
and I want to make my audience feel suspense but not to the extent of horror and
I like the mystery the genre has to offer. To be able to fully achieve my chosen
genre I will have to include certain characters, use music that build suspense and
suits the scene and then choose a good setting that not only matches the genre
but also suits the storyline that I will create. Props that I use will make sense and
hold importance in the story as well and I will demonstrate all these features and
feelings through cinematography, mise-en-scene, sound and editing.
