Genre refers to the categories that films can be divided into, such as horror, romance, comedy, science fiction, and westerns. Genre is important because it makes it easier to classify and market films, helps production companies find funding by appealing to established genres, and allows audiences to anticipate a film's content based on its genre. Key conventions of genres like horror include dark lighting, old settings, gore, ghosts, hauntings, and death, while westerns commonly feature cowboys, Native Americans, gun fights, horses, and specific clothing. Science fiction films often contain aliens, futuristic settings, metallic clothing, advanced technology, and space.
