2. Outline
• An overview of the past year at
LBU
• Developing the guiding
principles for the use of
generative artificial intelligence
• Supporting the development of
information literacy across the
institution
• Sources of support
3. An overview of the past year
• Library Academic Support contributed directly to writing
both the interim guidance and subsequent principles (first
guidance published 18th of April 2023)
• Updates to our Academic Integrity Module and referencing
guidance (25 April 2023)
• Sessions for professional services staff were developed
and tested (June-September 2023)
• Sessions created for members of academic staff (delivered
through Schools and the Academic Integrity forum)
(September 2023-January 2024)
• Final set of guiding principles approved 15 January 2024,
incorporating key information literacy contexts
4. Our guiding principles
• Take a pragmatic view that these technologies
are here to stay; it’s about user education and
knowing how to use these tools ethically and
responsibly
• Focus on how the tools work as opposed to
”how to use” on specific tools/software
• Includes specific wording relating to four of the
five contexts included in CILIP’s definition of
information literacy (2018):
• Critical thinking
• Ethical use, including digital footprint/privacy
• Bias and misinformation
• Employability
5. Initial collaborators
• Academic Quality Enhancement
• Academic Integrity Leads
• Students’ Union Advice Service
• Centre for Teaching and Learning
• Library and Student Services
colleagues:
• Technologies for Learning
(copyright/VLE)
• Disability Services
• Library and Student IT Advice
6. Initial
Teaching/Guidance
An introduction to Artificial Integelligence Tools,
specifically Large Language Models (LLMs)
Focussed on information literacy related
contexts/skills, particularly around:
• How these tools work
• Misinformation/accuracy/nuance
• Digital footprint, including privacy/intellectual
propery
• Ethical considerations, including digital
inequities, environmental/social costs
• Discussion of where users might experience
difficulties and how we could mitigate
7. Impact so far
• Success has been largely measured through post-session
feedback forms, referrals, and number of requests
• Colleagues, particularly in professional services, have a better
understandong of how information literacy is applied in their
work and personal lives
• Has allowed us to incoporate information literacy more overtly
into all our teaching sessions and materials
• Our guiding principles clearly state key information literacy
skills/contexts
• Sharing of information has increased and additional
collaborations have been arranged (including involvement in
research on how these tools can be used with specific
subjects and co-delivery of sessions)
