What is a generalization?
■A generalization is a statement that is
usually true.
■Some key words that signal generalizations:
– All
– Many
– Most
– Always
– Never
Examples
■Most students like snow days.
■Many people like to eat turkey on
Thanksgiving.
■All of the other kids have iPods!
Sometimes Generalizations are
Faulty
■This means that generalizations can be
wrong!
– Example: All tall people are good at
basketball.
– Some tall people are not athletic, so this
generalization cannot be true.
