Editor's Notes

  • #10 Christian: Initially we actually looked at a very large offshore Floating Storage and Injection Unit. However during the Concept Select stage of the project, this was ruled out due to costs, and we rather landed on a solution whereby each shuttle carrier acts as the intermediate storage which is needed to achieve continuous injection from a small floating injection unit into the reservoir. This means that one shuttle carrier must at all times be connected, and swich-over can be done once a new laden shuttle carrier arrives at the second offloading buoy. The heating and injection modules are place below deck on the FIU so that it is completely protected from green sea. The power of the FIU is received from the moored shuttle carrier (+ battery back-up for redundancy) The unit is normally unmanned, and controlled from shore. The CO2 will be heated and injected into reservoir in dense phase (>5°C & 65 -160 barg) Instead of a floating unit, if the location allows, the FIU functionality can be on an existing offshore installation, or on a new fixed structure such as a jacket. Also, we plan to standardize the heating and injection modules for the FIU so that it potentially can be put directly on the shuttle tankers if the specific business case would allow for it. The key Innovation of the FIU is the ability to use power from the CO2 shuttle carrier, its ability to be normally unmanned, and the equipment required for offshore loading of CO2.
