The 16th Lok Sabha elections were held from April to May 2014 over nine phases, making it the longest election in India's history. Over 814 million people voted to elect members of parliament. The results on May 16th saw the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi win a majority, bringing an end to the Congress party-led United Progressive Alliance's rule. The elections were considered a mandate for change and anti-incumbency against the previous government. Narendra Modi became the new Prime Minister of India.
