Introduction
• Uttar Pradesh is the most populous state in
India.
• Uttar Pradesh has the world's largest
population for a sub-national democracy.
• Created on 1st April 1937 as United Province,
and was renamed Uttar Pradesh in 1950.
• On November 2000, a new state, Uttrakhand,
was carved out from the Himalayan hill region
of Uttar Pradesh.

• The Indian National Congress has dominated the
state's politics since independence.
• In 90’s the rise of regional parties such as
Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party
(BSP) challenged the traditional political base of
INC in the state.
• In 2007 BSP came in power with absolute
majority.
• In 1967 legislative assembly had 431 seats but
now it consist of 403 seats.
Current Political Scenario of U.P.
• In last assembly elections SP won by absolute
majority.
• Out of 403 seats they were able to bag 224 seats.
• BSP got 80 seats, BJP conquered 47 seats, INC
got 38 seats and the independent party bagged 14
seats.
• In 2007 state legislative elections BSP was the
winner with 206 seats and in 2002 SP won with
143 seats.

• In 2012 Akhilesh Yadav was elected C.M of
U.P.
• He fulfilled some of the promises made by him
during his election campaign.
• For example free laptops, unemployment
allowance, allowance to economically
backward girls for education.
• Various aids to farmers were also provided by
Akhilesh Yadav’s government.

• Opposition parties have slammed the Akhilesh
government for breakdown of law and order in
the state since the time it came to power.
• Cases of communal riots also increased in U.P.
• Nepotism is more in U.P. compared to any other
state.
• It’s said that reins of power are still held by senior
Yadav only.
• And the party is also referred as the party of
“goons”.
2017 Elections
• The polls are expected to be held in Nov'16.
• Main party’s involved in the election are:-
SP BSP BJP
INC RLD Communist party
of India
SP’s Agenda for 2017 Elections
• Samajwadi Party's basic plan is to retain power.
• They launched 'Mission 2017' to make people
aware of its schemes and counter BJP's influence.
• In Mar'16, SP announced a list of 143 candidates
for the polls.
• Though the polls were more than a year away, SP
didn't refrain from looking for the right candidates
keeping class/religion/caste in mind and arranging
funds for campaigning.
BSP’s Agenda for 2017 Elections
• BSP's plan is to return to their former power.
• The party created religion/caste-based groups
to reach out to people and made it clear to have
the support of Muslims and Dalits.
• Hoping to make a comeback in the state, BSP
announced support to Congress significantly
because of the Muslim votebank of the
Congress.
BJP’s Agenda for 2017 Elections
• BJP planned to woo people from all backgrounds,
castes, and religions; district heads from
backward sections were appointed to please
backward votebank.
• Shiv Pratap Shukla replaced Abbas Naqvi to
please forward sections and strike a balance
between forward and backward vote banks.
• Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh's massive rallies to
address farmers and other sections, and Brahm
Chetna Yatra to target Buddhists were flagged off.
INC’s Agenda for 2017 Elections
• Congress is putting their powerful women
leaders against other party’s tough candidates.
• The party planned a strategy to counterattack
biggies from other parties in the elections.
• Congress decided to place women against
strong candidates from other parties; Priyanka
Gandhi Vadra was expected to take the charge
in UP.

• Ahead of the 2017 Uttar Pradesh polls, Raj
Babbar has been appointed the President of Uttar
Pradesh Congress module.
• Ghulam Nabi Azad, AICC General Secretary In-
charge, made the announcement and indicated
that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra wouldn't act as the
star campaigner of the party.
• Earlier, Priyanka declined the formal post as a star
campaigner; however, she would address rallies in
Amethi and Rae Bareli.
Candidates of All Party’s in 2017
Elections
• Samajwadi Party has named Akhilesh Yadav as
their candidate for this upcoming elections
also.
• Bahujan Samaj Party is placing Mayawati as
their candidate in this election.
• BJP has not yet revealed their candidate’s
name for U.P. Elections 2017.
• And INC has given Sheila Dixit’s name as
their party’s candidate for 2017 U.P. Elections.
