We’ll identify the things that make your work unique, marketable, and irresistible to publishing gatekeepers, and then with lots of examples and time for practice and personal feedback, we’ll work on verbal “elevator pitches,” one-paragraph hooks, and query letters.

Fairy tales have traditionally been part of bedtime stories for children, but some argue they promote outdated gender roles or contain inappropriate themes. The sources discuss both sides of this debate. Source A notes fairy tales may encourage outdated views of women's roles by depicting princesses waiting to be rescued. However, Source D argues fairy tales help children process their emotions and support character development. Source F quotes Richard Dawkins stating fairy tales can stimulate children's imaginations despite concerns over supernatural themes. The effects of fairy tales on child development are complex with reasonable perspectives on both sides.

Valerie Estelle Frankel and Dean Leetal's book on this subject is coming from McFarland, 2024!!
A brave heroine whose quest involves living her true gender. A genderqueer knight who battles the transphobic court to save their prince. The journeys taken by trans heroes weave in and out of Joseph Campbell’s classic pattern, but deviate from it in specific ways. The hero often fears discovery by the close community, but nonetheless departs on the adventure—leaving a place of dangers to find a refuge and community of acceptance. Talismans include gendered tools that show the mentor's acceptance of the hero's real identity. The romance is likewise a guided path to selfhood and affirmation. Villains are the transphobes of real life, mythologized and made deadlier. In happier stories, the parent figures learn from the conflict, and finally seek reconciliation. Top franchises like Steven Universe, The Matrix, The Umbrella Academy, Sense8, Sandman, DC, and Marvel demonstrate these tropes, as do recent top fantasy books and graphic novels by nonbinary authors worldwide. The tales end with the hero wielding the dual worlds in a way beyond anything Campbell observed, which nonetheless fits the patterns of the oldest myths.
The Postcolonial Villain's Journey postcolonial.pptxValerie Frankel
Wicked, Moana, Maleficent, and so many recent novels (Medea, Circe, Queen of the Conquered, The Poppy War, Sorrowland, The Deep) tell a different kind of villain's journey--about a heroine mislabeled and condemned by society after she's been betrayed and tricked. How does her journey go? Let's find out...(a paper presented at Wiscon 2022). Youtube available: https://youtu.be/BBkMEKDD7ao
Dybbuks, Robots, and Golems: Exploring Jewish Science Fiction and FantasyValerie Frankel
So many creators and characters are Jewish, from the earliest invention of American science fiction to the superheroes and novelists of each era to so many wonderful stories today. From Bambi and Kafka to Fievel and Mel Brooks to Harley Quinn and Juda, let's see what's out there today.
Discover the flip side of Joseph Campbell with the Villain's Journey--structure of films like Malificent, Star Wars, Joker, etc. Accompanies the Youtube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6diSBaEvY24
The fourth wave has decidedly arrived, celebrating women and minorities in central roles. Utopias like Black Panther celebrate nonEuropean alternate paths. Disney princesses reject the old patterns. Now women can be Ghostbusters or Jedi, captain Stormtroopers, fly the TARDIS. Superheroines have found a sense of humor. Meanwhile, self-publishing and internet platforms have dispersed with many gatekeepers and established new levels of diversity. Thanks to the speed of the internet, backlash for this new wave appears simultaneous. However, progress keeps coming. Fans are finding alternatives to the Bechdel Test and clamoring for diverse creators, even as they discover amazing alternatives to bland strong female characters and gratuitous sexualization. While these trends were already appearing in books, comics, and television, cracking the most expensive medium of film has meant real global change. Youtube available at https://studio.youtube.com/video/e_hCmnqPfXg
Superheroines through the decades have been far more multicultural than readers might expect. There were Senorita Rio and the Victory Girls in the 40s; Storm, Mantis, Talia al Ghul, Misty Knight, Psylocke, Ms. Marvel and a host of TV shows in the 70s; Jubilee, Katana, Karma, Kitty Pryde, Amanda Waller, and a Spider-Woman TV show in the 80s; Oracle and Martha Washington in the nineties. Today, there’s an explosion onscreen from Wonder Woman and Black Panther’s family to TV shows like Runaways, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, DC’s Super Hero Girls, and Agents of SHIELD. Comics like Faith, A-Force, America Chavez, Spider-Woman, Moon Girl, Silk, Ms. Marvel, Birds of Prey, and Squirrel Girl emphasize how these stories are always pushing the boundaries. The document discusses various character names from Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games trilogy. It analyzes the meanings and possible influences behind character names like Katniss Everdeen, Peeta Mellark, Gale Hawthorne, and others. Many of the names reference plants and nature, reflecting the importance of foraging and survival in the series. The document also explores literary and cultural influences that may have inspired Collins in her naming choices.
This document discusses the symbolism of various plants found in the Hunger Games and Divergent series. It notes that sego lilies represent beauty but also rebellion in Matched. In the Hunger Games, dandelions symbolize hope and rebirth for Katniss. Rue is likened to a small yellow flower that grows in meadows. Primrose represents youth and protection. Buttercup the cat comes to symbolize the wild side of Katniss's personality. Snow's hybrid roses in the Capitol represent artificiality and the concealment of blood, while the white rose Katniss gives him symbolizes lost innocence.
This document provides context on various characters and elements from The Hunger Games trilogy by comparing them to figures and events from Roman history and literature. It discusses how characters like Caesar Flickerman, Cinna, and Plutarch Heavensbee draw inspiration from historical Romans and how the world of Panem reflects aspects of the Roman Empire, such as its decadence and use of violence for entertainment. References are made to works like Shakespeare's Julius Caesar and Plutarch's Lives to explain the symbolic significance and influences behind Collins' names and story elements.

Outlander is much more than a television romance about a World War II nurse and a Jacobite in a fetching kilt. The series has been categorized as a period drama, adventure saga, military history and fantasy epic. Inspired by the Irish legends of Fionn Mac Cumhaill and the prophecies of Brahan Seer, the storyline is also filled with mythology and symbolism from around the world, from the Fair Folk and the Loch Ness monster to wendigos, ghosts, zombies and succubae. The series is also rich with its own symbolism: heather and white roses, the dragonfly in amber, Claire’s blue vase and wedding gown, her wedding rings and pearl necklace. This presentation by Valerie Estelle Frankel (author of five books about the Starz series and novels) untangles the myriad of myths, legends, symbols and literary references found within.
How did the 1920s fall into fascism, and how did we start walking down a similar road? How does Rowling's story of angry Grindelwald and his quest for Wizard Supremacy mirror it? Parallels between then and now.
The document provides descriptions of various magical creatures featured in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It summarizes the key details about Knarls, Bowtruckles like Pickett, Demiguises, Nifflers, Graphorns, Thunderbirds like Frank, and Pukwudgies. Real-world animals are also described that may have inspired each magical creature's appearance and abilities.
From Downton Abbey, Great Gatsby and Boardwalk Empire to the new Harry Potter prequel Fantastic Beasts, fans are flying back to the 1920s. But what's the appeal? How does 20s culture reflect our own and what does it reveal about history and its cycles? (Presented at Clockwork Alchemy, May 29 2016, San Jose, CA)
The rise of retrofuturism has introduced a fantastical new line with the DC Bombshells -- heroines without the men, all set in World War II. Their aesthetic and clever adaptation mirrors the best of steampunk rewriting. There's also Gotham by Gaslight, JLA: Age of Wonder, The Golden Age, Batman: Leatherwing, Batman/Houdini, and more. Marvel has offered their own retellings, in the alt-Battleworld, with J. Michael Straczynski's Golden Age-style The Twelve, and with even earlier fantasies back to 1602: Witchhunter Angela. Who's doing it right, and how steampunk are these stories?

The Heroine's Journey in Star Wars The Force AwakensValerie Frankel
The document discusses Joseph Campbell's model of the hero's journey and proposes an alternative model called the heroine's journey. It outlines the stages of the heroine's journey, noting key differences from the hero's journey, such as receiving household objects rather than weapons from mentors and questing to save loved ones rather than defeat a dark lord. It provides feminine symbols commonly found in heroine's journeys and describes common sidekicks, trials, and adversaries like animal helpers and shapeshifting partners.

How to Manage Reception Report in Odoo 17Celine George
A business may deal with both sales and purchases occasionally. They buy things from vendors and then sell them to their customers. Such dealings can be confusing at times. Because multiple clients may inquire about the same product at the same time, after purchasing those products, customers must be assigned to them. Odoo has a tool called Reception Report that can be used to complete this assignment. By enabling this, a reception report comes automatically after confirming a receipt, from which we can assign products to orders.

Senate hopeful Sarah Palin’s latest media interview once again turned her
into a political sideshow act — but as her husband, Todd Palin, stood by her
side and defended her at a hastily planned press conference, his hair
emerged as the mane event.
Palin wore his glossy, dark locks in a messy-but-artful do. It looked cool,
sophisticated and totally under control — when he needed it most.
“He’s not hiding behind his hair,” says famed stylist and midtown salon
owner Louisa Licari. “Picking up his hair lifts his face. He is a pretty chic boy
— he’s got it going on.”
Alaskan men are embracing Palin’s hair, even if the controversy that made it
famous makes them cringe.
“I love the hair. If I could find a way to make my hair look like Palin’s, I
would be so happy,” said Washington Heights tutor and dad Kyle Trueblood,
also a brunette. “He’s a really handsome man — he could get a way better
woman than Sarah Palin.”
Palin’s hair has been admired and tweeted about since 2011, and even the
conservative National Review called his style “Kennedy glamour
resurrected” and said he “looks awesome at a press conference.”
