DISTANCE, TIME AND SPEED
By Sofia Fernandez
Week 08
Distance (also called length) is how long something is.
It is measured in milimetres (mm), centimetres (cm), metres (m) and
kilometres (kms) in the Metric System.
Approximated comparison:
1 mm = thickness of a nail
1 cm = thickness of a 10p coin.
1 m = length of your leg.
LENGTH
LENGTH: Conversion
EXAMPLE:
Write in ascending order the following length units:
2 m, 15 cm, 0.3 km, 1500 mm, 220 cm
2 m = 2 x 100 = 200 cm
15 cm
0.3 km = 0.3 x 1000 = 300 m → 300 x 100 = 30000 cm
1500 mm = 1500 / 10 = 150 cm
220 cm
TIME
Time is the elapsed period in between two different moments.
It is measured in seconds (s), minutes (min), hours (hr), days, months,
years.
1 HOUR = 60 MIN
1 MIN = 60 S
1 HOUR = 360 S
Any type of measurement can be done either in metric o imperial units.
The change from metric to imperial and vice versa is as follows:
METRIC AND IMPERIAL UNITS
LENGTH
1 inch = 2.56 cm 1 cm = 0.39 inch
1 foot = 0.30 cm 1 m = 3.28 feet
1 yard = 0.91 m 1 m = 1.09 yards
1 mi = 1.60 km 1 km = 0.62 miles
SPEED
Speed is a measure of quickly something moves.
The units we used to measure speed are called compound units, as
these are a combination of another two.
The most common units are m/s or km/h
Don't forget to check the units!
RECAP
