DEFINITION OF GRADES

The results of the GCSE examinations are reported on a 7-point scale of
grades: A, B, C, D, E, F and G. Candidates who fail to reach the minimum
standard for G receive no grade. A subject receiving no grade will not be
recorded on the certificate. Grades A, B and C maintain the standards of
the former GCE'O'level grades A, B and C and the former CSE Grade l;
grades D, E, F and G maintain the standards of the former CSE grades 2, 3,
4 and 5.


The assessment of Oral Communication is compulsory for all candidates
entered for GCSE English. It is separately assessed and the results are
reported on a 5-point numbered scale, with Grade 1 indicating the highest
level of attainment and Grade 5 the lowest level of attainment.

Grades are shown in descending order of grade, the highest grade.
appearing at the top of the list. Subjects for which the same grade is
awarded are shown in alphabetical order.



EXPLANATION OF SYMBOLS

*           This GCSE examination included an assessment of English Oral
            Communication (see Definition of Grades above).

**          This GCSE examination wirs designed for candidates aged 17
            years and over.

***         This GCSE examination was designed to meet the needs of
            external candidates who were unable to meet the course work or
            other requirements set out in the National Criteria.



CONDITIONS OF ISSUE

This certificate is and remains the property of the Northern Examining
Association at all times and is issued on the following conditions:

(a) any alteration to this certificate renders it invalid;
(b) this certificate must be delivered up to the Northern Examining
      Association on request by the Association.
