Switchgears play an instrumental role in the flow of electricity in any network, which makes them an integral
part of power systems. They consist of combination of disconnect switches, fuses or circuit breakers which are
used to control, isolate and protect electrical equipments. Switchgears are used to energize or de-energize
electrical equipment, as per the requirement. They perform the function of carrying, making and breaking the
current from power generation to consumption of the same.
Current interruption devices or switching devices are known as circuit breakers, and are operated manually.
They can sense any kind of abnormality in the current flow such as overcurrent, short circuit or any other fault
in the system, and automatically switch off the electricity flow. On the basis of voltage class, switchgears are
broadly classified into three categories, namely, low voltage switchgear, medium voltage switchgear and high
voltage switchgear.
