Gatwick Airport used simulation software to design its new A380 boarding facilities and processes without significant investment. The simulation allowed Gatwick to test different gate room scenarios and boarding processes. It determined that with some modifications, existing gate rooms could process A380 flights. The simulation validated that Gatwick's facilities could efficiently handle the increased passenger volumes of A380 flights. Gatwick now uses data from the simulation exercises to advise airlines on optimal boarding procedures.
