Introduction:
Till a few years back, the most popular forms of entertainment available to the youth in
India were the traditional forms like movies, music, television and sports. Gaming as a culture
was a concept, alien to India. The potential market for gaming has emerged over time and its
growing popularity can be attributed to the new digital generation. In a country with burgeoning
youth and middle class, more than 50 percent of the youngsters who fall in the age group of 18
to 35 constitute the target audience for gaming.
When gaming started in India, it was primarily an outsourcing hub for foreign gaming companies
providing game development services. The console and PC-based games resulted in a very small
percentage of the gaming population. Power issues, low smartphone base and Internet
penetration were some of the reasons that further attributed to a small gaming market in India.
The industry which had just about 25 companies at the time has grown to more than 250 game
developers today. Out of the 100 top grossing apps on Google Play store, 60 percent of the apps
are games. This is an indicator of the revenue generating ability of the apps.
Online gaming will grow quite fast in the next couple of years. Currently, majority of online
gamers in the country are casual gamers (using single player games). The other categories of
online games like the Multi-Player, and Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games
(MMORPGs) are yet to grow up.

Observations from the table:
 Smartphones and tablets will account for 27.8% of the global games market in 2016.
 Videos game console segment saw a positive CAGR of 3.5%, annual growth rate of the
console segment is very likely on the decline. Smartphone is eating into its market share.
 Social/casual gaming is likely to see a CAGR of negative 1.7%
 MMO or Massive Mass player online games have always been popular and are likely to
grow further by a CAGR of 10.4% by 2016.
 Games for the PC/Mac platforms are on the decline and a CAGR of negative 6.4% is
expected for this segment.

its movement into India, with the Indian Gaming League (or IGL), which launched recently
in 1st february 2016

is valued at around half a billion. Mobile and console-based games value would increase

 PC hardware gaming market is set to grow in the next few years.
 Total gaming hardware marker in 2014 was more than $24,936 billion and it slightly
declined in 2015 to $24,684 billion.
 However, in 2016 it looks like that the gaming hardware market will increase to $26.118
billion and it will reach $28.253 billion in 2017.

Conclusion
In India, gaming is emerging as an exciting brand of entertainment. There’s a huge potential for
gaming industry with various ongoing technological innovations and with the changing mindset
of the youngsters in the country.
Although, mobile gaming in India is still in the nascent stage, it is predicted that this industry will
generate great opportunities for game developers over the next two years. It is predicted that
from Rs.860 crore in 2015, the mobile gaming segment size will jump more than triple to Rs.1,800
crore by end of 2017. Further, with 350 million mobile internet user base, cheap 3G plans, advent
of 4G and affordable smartphones, and highly untouched T2 & T3 markets, Indian gaming
industry will grow into one of the best markets in the world.
