- 2. What is Games Sense? • Games sense is a concept that involves teaching students skills and abilities that can be utilised in sports, by playing games that have skills based on sports. • It is achieved through participation in playing games and allowing children to learn skills and techniques in a fun and non-threatening environment that is created by the teacher.
- 3. What is Games Sense? • Games sense is focussed on participation. If a child is unwilling to participate in sports due to their ability level and lack of skills, then Game sense is a way to encourage students to develop their abilities and skills through participation in games. “Skill is developed in Games Sense, but is developed contextually and is less explicit than approaches that focus strongly on technique” (Light, 2006 pg. 8)
- 4. Why use Games Sense? • Games sense is a vital concept to encourage students to participate in physical activity and learn skills that can be transferred to sports. Instead of concentrating on drills and learning of specific techniques to play sports, students have the opportunity to fully participate in a game, which increases engagement and the likelihood that they will actually enjoy the physical activity, even if they are a ‘non-sporty’ person. “Skills are developed through play, dance, gymnastics, games, sports, aquatics and other recreational activities” (BOS PDHPE 2009 pg. 8)

Why use Games Sense? • Increasing participation in sports and physical activity is extremely important in young children. “Regular physical activity is an essential ingredient for the development and maintenance of optimum health. It can improve cardiovascular efficiency and aid efforts to reduce risk factors of coronary heart disease. It is critical for enhancing bone development, controlling obesity and improving psychological health and immune status. The related health and fitness benefits enable the individual to engage in leisure activities and to meet physical work demands without excessive physiological stress” (BOS PDHPE 2009 pg.7).
- 6. Why use Games Sense? • Fostering an environment where children are keen to participate is the overall goal of every teacher when designing a lesson in all subjects. "When students are engaged in learning they are connected to the activity at hand" (Woolfolk & Margetts 2013 pg. 352). Any pedagogical technique that can encourage engagement with the learning material should be utilised whenever possible.
