Early crypto games launched way back in 2017, with CryptoKitties becoming the earliest craze, causing congestion on the Ethereum network. CryptoKitties led to the creation of the ERC-721 NFT standard, and the first game-centric chain Flow.
The First GameFi Wave in 2021, ushered in by Axie Infinity and later StepN brought new GameFi trends such as Play-to-Earn (P2E) and Move-to-Earn (M2E). Blockchain games across a variety of genres quickly followed, and quickly spread beyond Ethereum onto more performant chains with cheaper gas fees.
While most of these games eventually collapsed due to overly-simplistic gameplay and unsustainable tokenomics, a few of them such as Alien Worlds, Farmers World, Splinterlands and Axie Infinity have survived until today, albeit with a much smaller community of active addresses. Compared to the peak of GameFi in November 2021, the number of active participating addresses have declined by 57.9% to 837k.

Play to Earn games are a new trend in gaming that's quickly catching on. The main value of a play to earn game comes from the currency earned within the platform. While not all play to earn games are created equal, the majority of these games use native tokens for in-game purchases and trading among players. The game's economic model should also be simple enough to encourage players to play and earn for the game's items.
Game development innovations like virtual reality and a higher level of internet penetration have made gaming more enjoyable and convenient. Further developments in technologies like blockchain eased asset exchanges within games. While gamers are thrilled to try new releases of their favorite games, game developers should continuously evolve their skills.

The potential of Web3 games is clear: a creative world of great game play with the freedom to expand beyond existing platforms and “walled garden” franchises. It means players and creators being offered new choices of ownership and investment in their favourite games and virtual worlds—building fun, social and immersive communities and market economies.
Web3 games, those enabled by blockchain technologies, still need great games to grow the sector—and they’re on their way, along with improved tools and technology standards.

After a strong 2023 Q4, the total crypto market cap continued rallying by +64.5% in 2024 Q1, reaching a high of $2.9 trillion on March 13.
In absolute terms, the growth of this quarter (+$1.1 trillion) was almost double that of the previous quarter (+$0.61 trillion). This was largely driven by the approval of US spot Bitcoin ETFs in early January, sending BTC to a new all-time high in March.
Our comprehensive 2024 Q1 Crypto Industry Report covers everything from the crypto market landscape to analyzing Bitcoin and Ethereum, deep diving into the decentralized finance (DeFi) and non-fungible token (NFT) ecosystems, and reviewing how centralized exchanges (CEX) and decentralized exchanges (DEX) have performed.

RWA Report 2024: Rise of Real-World Assets in Crypto | CoinGeckoCoinGecko
Real World Assets (RWAs) in crypto have a long history, starting with fiat-backed stablecoins such as Tether (USDT). However, since the introduction of DeFi in 2020, and the bear market of 2022, a more diverse variety of RWAs have been tokenized to cater to the needs of on-chain investors. While RWAs are still predominantly focused on debt / credit, other assets such as real estate, art & collectibles, etc have also piqued the interest of investors.
Fundamentally, RWA projects live at the intersection between the real world and blockchains, and between issuers and investors. Whether they can act as an effective intermediary at these intersections will be pivotal to their success. While there will inevitably be reliance on third parties, such as oracles, custodians, credit assessors, and more, how these are effectively utilized and managed will remain crucial for their continued operations.

2023 Annual Crypto Industry Report | CoinGeckoCoinGecko
In the fourth quarter of 2023, the crypto market experienced a surge in anticipation related to ETFs, particularly with the growing optimism surrounding the potential approval of US spot Bitcoin ETFs. This optimism contributed to a bullish market sentiment, leading to a significant increase in the total crypto market cap from $1.1 trillion to $1.6 trillion, marking a 55% rise. During this period, the price of Bitcoin soared from $27,000 to $42,000.
When considering the entire year of 2023, the crypto market witnessed substantial growth, more than doubling its total market cap from $832 billion at the beginning of the year. This remarkable expansion was primarily driven by Bitcoin's impressive resurgence, experiencing a 2.6x increase. After the challenges and stagnation experienced in 2022, 2023 proved to be a robust year of recovery for the crypto industry.
Our comprehensive 2023 Crypto Industry Report covers everything from the crypto market landscape to analyzing Bitcoin and Ethereum, deep diving into the decentralized finance (DeFi) and non-fungible token (NFT) ecosystems, and reviewing how centralized exchanges (CEX) and decentralized exchanges (DEX) have performed.
2023 Q3 Crypto Industry Report | CoinGeckoCoinGecko
A significant market downturn in mid-August split the relatively slow Q3 into two parts. With limited liquidity on cryptocurrency exchanges, Bitcoin's (BTC) value plummeted from around $29,000 to approximately $26,000 within a single day on August 17, causing the total cryptocurrency market capitalization to drop from $1.2 trillion to $1.1 trillion.
Despite the absence of any major market-related news on that particular day, it appeared as if traders were winding down their activities for the remainder of the summer. Trading volumes on centralized exchanges have declined by 20.2% in the third quarter compared to the second quarter. Despite it being a pretty eventful three months, the crypto market was absent of any momentum.
Our comprehensive 2023 Q3 Crypto Industry Report covers everything from the crypto market landscape to analyzing Bitcoin and Ethereum, deep diving into the decentralized finance (DeFi) and non-fungible token (NFT) ecosystems, and reviewing how centralized exchanges (CEX) and decentralized exchanges (DEX) have performed.
Deep Diving Into ETH Liquid Staking | CoinGeckoCoinGecko
The launch of Ethereum's Beacon chain in December 2020 brought staking rewards to validators but required a hefty 32 ETH stake, prompting the emergence of pooled staking and Liquid Staking Derivatives (LSDs). By August 2023, LSD protocols accounted for 43.7% of the total 26.4 million ETH staked. Post-Shapella, LSD staking surged, causing long entry queues while exit queues remained minimal. Top 8 LSDs yielded an average of 4.4% APY since January 2022, with Frax leading. However, yields are expected to decrease as more ETH is staked.
LSDs have distributed about 100,000 ETH in quarterly staking rewards, capturing over half of all ETH emissions since late 2022. This growth has given rise to LSDFi, with Lybra, Pendle, and EigenLayer dominating the sector, growing by 58.7x since January 2023. Despite these gains, concerns about cartelization and concentration loom, prompting debates about self-limitation within the protocol and LSDs.
Join us as dive into the realm of ETH liquid staking, how LSDs have become one of the largest segments in DeFi, as well as the growth of the LSDFi sector.
2023 Q2 Crypto Industry Report | CoinGeckoCoinGecko
After the exuberance of Q1, the crypto market took Q2 to consolidate the gains and increased slightly by 0.14%, from a total market cap of $1.238 trillion on March 31, 2023, to $1.240 trillion on June 30, 2023. April and May were relatively quiet months, particularly after Ethereum’s Shapella upgrade on April 12 as the market was absent of any strong overarching narrative. Prices of Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) are now hovering around $30,000 and $1,900 respectively, with BTC climbing 6.9%, while ETH increased by 6.0% in Q2.
Our comprehensive 2023 Q2 Crypto Industry Report covers everything from the crypto market landscape to analyzing Bitcoin and Ethereum, deep diving into the decentralized finance (DeFi) and non-fungible token (NFT) ecosystems, and reviewing how centralized exchanges (CEX) and decentralized exchanges (DEX) have performed.
The State of Decentralized Perpetual Protocols | CoinGeckoCoinGecko
As fears of another crypto exchange collapsing have gotten the community on edge, more crypto users are turning towards decentralized perpetual protocols to satiate their demand for leveraged trading. Throughout the recent bear market, perpetual exchanges have been a beacon of light in the otherwise gloomy state of DeFi, providing an avenue for users to trade with leverage in a permissionless way while allowing liquidity providers to earn sustainable fees in an environment starved for yield.
Dive into our State of Decentralized Perpetual Protocols Report as we explore the history and evolution of decentralized perpetuals, how they have performed thus far, and what we can expect from decentralized perpetuals in the near future.
2023 Q1 Crypto Industry Report | CoinGeckoCoinGecko
A new year brings new beginnings, as the crypto market woke from its end-2022 hibernation to shake off the bears, increasing 48.9% from a total market cap of $831.8B on Jan 1, 2023 to $1.238T on Mar 31, 2023. While it was not smooth sailing all the way, this run reversed losses stemming from FTX’s collapse, returning the market to heights before the Ethereum Merge. Prices of Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) are now hovering around $28,000 and $1,800 respectively, with BTC performing particularly well, gaining close to 70% this quarter.
Our comprehensive 2023 Q1 Crypto Industry Report covers everything from the crypto market landscape to analyzing Bitcoin and Ethereum, deep diving into the decentralized finance (DeFi) and non-fungible token (NFT) ecosystems, and reviewing how centralized exchanges (CEX) and decentralized exchanges (DEX) have performed.

We are pleased to release the Global Crypto Classification Standard (GCCS) jointly developed by 21Shares and CoinGecko, which serves as an industry taxonomy and uniformed way to categorize cryptoassets.
Crypto, with its unfamiliar technology stack and sheer number and variety of projects and tokens, terminology and jargon, may be daunting and overwhelming to industry newcomers. The GCCS provides a clear framework to classify various projects and cryptoassets within the space, so that users and investors can easily identify what a project does, and where they sit as part of the larger crypto stack.

Introduction to Blockchain Gaming & Play-to-Earn
By combining video games with the capabilities of the blockchain, blockchain games allowed
users to play games while also earning token rewards for doing so.
One of the first blockchain
games to be released on
Ethereum is CryptoKitties,
where players could purchase
virtual pets in the form of
NFTs and breed them to
create new pets with different
traits.
While the game proved to be
extremely popular, the influx of
players resulted in network
congestion and high
transaction fees, amounting to
as high as $200 per transaction.
As a result, newer blockchains
such as Flow and Ronin were
created to address this problem.
The success of Axie Infinity
resulted in the proliferation of
similar games with near-identical
mechanics. However, it also
helped to expand the GameFi
sector exponentially, with new
types of blockchain-based games
being built across various genres.
What is Blockchain Gaming and Play-to-Earn?
With the evolution of smart contracts and NFTs on the Ethereum
network, developers were able to implement the traditional
mechanisms of video games on-chain, allowing for the creation
of blockchain games. The first iteration of blockchain games, e.g.
CryptoKitties spawned the ERC-721 NFT standard, and allowed
users to verify simple in-game actions and trade their game
items with other players in a permissionless manner.
Although the P2E hype fell quickly due to the low quality of games available and
their unsustainable reward mechanics, the GameFi sector has continued to grow
over the past two years, branching out beyond just the monetization of video
games but also other activities, such as Move-to-Earn.
While the first few blockchain games proved to be extremely
popular, it also exposed the weakness of Ethereum’s scalability, it
led game devs to migrate and build on chains which were more
performant and cheaper.
Towards the end of 2020, rising interest in Axie NFTs and the Axie Infinity card
game gave way to the rise of the Play-to-Earn wave. As its name suggests, Play-to-
Earn (P2E) allows users to earn an income simply from playing games. Depending
on the game, there are different economies, strategies, and methods to build a
reliable revenue stream. A common example would be selling in-game resources
that require a significant time investment to obtain.
After the launch of the Ronin
sidechain in early 2021, users
were able to play and
perform transactions on
Axie Infinity at a much
lower cost, which brought in
more players and increased
demand for Axies.

3
The First GameFi Wave
The success of the first GameFi Wave with Axie, metaverse games and STEPN spurred significant
investments into blockchain gaming, with the promise of better gameplay and tokenomics.
The Launch of
CryptoKitties
• CryptoKitties, a virtual
cat breeding game, was
launched by Dapper
Labs in November
2017.
• The game caused
massive network
congestion on ETH,
leading to the
development of the
Flow blockchain
• After the success of
CryptoKitties, Dapper
Labs would partner
with the NBA to launch
TopShot, a sports
collectibles game.
• The popularity of NBA
TopShot would result in
more sports NFTs from
other franchises such
as the NFL and NHL.
The Rise of
Play-to-Earn
• Axie Infinity and the
ability to earn SLP
from playing the
game drew in players
in droves, particularly
from emerging markets
who could earn a living
playing the game.
• Rising price of Axie
NFTs and SLP led to the
creation of scholarship
guilds to offset the
startup cost to play the
game and draw in more
players.
• The success of Axie
resulted in the
proliferation of clones,
but all of them
ultimately collapsed
due to unsustainable
tokenomics.
Welcome to the
Metaverse
• After Axie, blockchain
games attempted to
emulate MMOs,
leading to the birth of
games such as The
Sandbox, Decentraland
and Somnium Space.
• Facebook’s pivot to
Meta and focus on the
metaverse then
supercharged this
trend, and it was
believed that
blockchains would be
crucial to building open
and interoperable
metaverses.
• However, the hype was
short-lived, as high
system requirements
and limited things to do
failed to retain users.
STEPN and
Move-to-Earn
• Launched in late 2021,
STEPN allowed users to
earn token rewards
just by walking,
kickstarting the Move-
to-Earn (M2E) wave.
• Unlike blockchain
games then, STEPN was
a mobile game, and
abstracts the
complexities of the
blockchain away from
users.
• While the high initial
rewards have faded
and so did their
userbase, STEPN also
spawned a bunch of
clones, and led to other
projects exploring the
gamification of
different activities.
The Institutions
Arrive
• Since the success of
Axie Infinity, VCs and
institutions such as
Animoca Brands, Yield
Guild Games have
raised and invested
hundreds of millions
into blockchain games
and various gaming
infrastructure.
• Traditional game
companies such as
Bandai Namco are also
getting involved
directly by building
their own NFT games.
• A few years on, lots of
new upcoming games
are on the horizon with
supposed AAA quality,
sustainable tokenomics
and better gameplay.

GameFi development only really took off in
2021, with significant investments flowing
into the sector. From 2021 onwards the

exponentially to ~700 games per year.
However, the market downturn in 2022 led
to a significant jump in dead games, with

No of Active GameFi Addresses & GameFi Transactions (Aug 2020 – Nov 2023) Daily Active GameFi Addresses across the top
13 gaming chains reached its peak of 1.99
million at the peak of the 2021 bull cycle on
November 30, led by Ronin which captured
35.9% of daily active GameFi addresses,
followed by BSC (21.9%) and Hive (21.3%).
GameFi Transactions across the top 13
gaming chains totaled 8.7 million as of
November 30, 2023. A significant
percentage (57.9%) of GameFi
transactions originate on Wax, which is
gasless.
Nonetheless, most blockchain games today
are built based on a hybrid architecture,
where the gaming engine and most, if not all
in-game actions / game states are not
actually stored on-chain. Instead on-chain
transactions are limited to minting /
upgrading NFTs or tokens which may have
some in-game utility.
However since then total active GameFi
addresses have declined by 57.9% to 0.84
million as of November 30, 2023. The main
chains which saw drop off in active GameFi
addresses were Ronin, Hive, BSC and Wax.

Number of Active Addresses & Transactions on Top 9 Gaming Chains
Amongst gaming-centric chains, Wax has the most daily active addresses and transactions,
though overall activity on gaming-centric chains still lag behind generalized chains in general.

Gaming-centric chains Wax, Flow and Ronin
have seen an overall decline of -35% from
727K to 472K in daily active addresses in 2023
compared to 2022.
Generalized chains had mixed results, with
Solana and Ethereum seeing declines while
Arbitrum, Polygon and BSC recorded gains in
average daily active addresses in 2023.
Average daily transactions paint a largely
similar picture, with the only exception being
BSC seeing a decline in onchain transactions
despite active addresses increasing.
This has led it to be surpassed by Wax, which
recorded 14.1M average daily transactions
in 2023. It is the only gaming-centric chain to
outpace a generalized chain in our
comparison.

There were strong surges in onchain
transactions in November on Ronin and
Polygon, with both chains recording >2x the

earlier YTD (Jan – Oct) averages. While
Ronin’s rise could be attributed to Pixels,
Polygon’s spike in transactions seems to have
originated from inscriptions-based tokens.

GameFi Transactions Non-GameFi Transactions
Generalized networks, such as Solana, BNB
Smart Chain and Polygon, have a much lower
share of active GameFi addresses and
transactions, as these blockchains are more
widely used for trading memecoins and DeFi
activities.
Unsurprisingly, chains built specifically for
gaming such as ImmutableX, Wax and Ronin
have a much larger share of active GameFi
addresses on their network, with 95% of
ImmutableX’s addresses participating in
GameFi. With zero gas fees, it is also no
surprise that GameFi contribute to most of
the transactions on ImmutableX (88%) and
Wax (91%).
The exception to this seems to be Flow,
where only 36% of its active addresses are
participating in GameFi, and only 27% of total
transactions on the chain are GameFi
transactions.
GameFi transactions on gasless blockchains
Skale and Hive only make up ~40 - 50% of
all transactions, despite a large majority of
active addresses on both networks
participating in GameFi. Most of the non-
GameFi transactions are on social apps,
analytics and smart contract creation.

Price Returns of Top 10 GameFi Tokens
8 of the 10 largest GameFi tokens, which all launched in 2021, still record gains from their
launch price, despite a massive decline across 2022.
The 2021 P2E wave saw numerous GameFi tokens surge
by several orders of magnitude, led by Axie Infinity’s
governance token, AXS, which rose by 1,096x at its
peak, from $0.15 in November 2020 to $157 in
November 2021.
In 2023, 8 out of the top 10 tokens are still priced higher
than their initial launch price, with AXS, MAGIC and GALA
still more than 10x higher despite declining across 2022.
Tokens that were launched towards the end of 2021 and
2022 fared much worse, with POLIS plunging by up to
97%, from an initial price of $8.60 in September 2021
to $0.22 towards the end of October 2023.

Price Returns of Top Gaming Chains vs GameFi Governance Tokens
While sentiment around the overall crypto markets has somewhat improved after several
catastrophes last year, the performance of GameFi tokens has largely underperformed.
The 2021 bull market drove the price of tokens to crazy highs. While the price of ETH
grew by 4x, BNB and SOL were amongst the top gainers that year, as more users
begun exploring altchains due to excessive transaction fees on the Ethereum
mainnet. SOL, the native gas token of the Solana blockchain rose from by almost
110x from $1.52 in January 2021 to $170.20 in December 2021.
Gasless blockchains such as WAX and HIVE required users to stake the network’s
native token to gain resources for validating transactions. As such, the massive influx
of transactions to these networks in 2021 resulted in the price of WAXP and HIVE
surging by 1150% and 1225% respectively.
As the P2E season took off during the bull market, most of the new and existing
GameFi tokens also saw their prices increase by several orders of magnitude. AXS, the
governance token of Axie Infinity, surged from $0.58 at the start of 2021 to $93.58
at the start of 2022.
Source: CoinGecko
With the overall crypto market seeing some resurgence in 2023, the GameFi sector
has also improved in terms of price performance. As Bitcoin more than doubled
its price since the start of the year, most network tokens are starting to make a
comeback, with SOL recording a 494% gain. Amongst GameFi projects, ILV and PRIME
are currently the top performers, surging by 180% and 121% respectively, while other
GameFi tokens have also risen significantly.
2022 proved to be a challenging year for crypto as markets turned red across the
board, with most GameFi and gaming chain tokens falling close to 90%. However,
the Move-to-Earn hype quickly took over, with STEPN leading the charge. The game’s
governance token, GMT, was the only gainer amongst Top 10 GameFi tokens, hitting a
peak of $4.11 before plummeting back to $0.22, recording a 69% gain.

Looking Ahead
The community is still waiting for the promises made in 2021 of AAA-quality blockchain games
with modern gameplay and sustainable tokenomics to be delivered.
Fully Onchain Games
§ On the other end of the blockchain gaming spectrum, a set of projects
are focused on building fully onchain games.
§ The target of these projects are to have the entire game, including its
game engine, assets, state, etc executed and stored onchain.
§ The potential benefits of fully onchain games are:
o Having a fully transparent, autonomous world that can live on even
if the devs leave the project
o Infinitely extendable through user generated content, including new
assets and mods
o Potentially interoperable with other blockchain projects, protocols
and marketplaces
§ However, significant challenges still remain:
o Existing blockchains are only performant enough for simpler,
asymmetric games
o The tooling and framework to build games and game engines
onchain have to be re-developed
o Blockchain-specific challenges, such as MEV, front-running, botting,
etc would still exist
Delivering on the Promises of 2021
§ During the 2021 GameFi Wave, devs raised heavy investments on the
promise of delivering AAA-quality blockchain games with modern gameplay
and sustainable tokenomics. It was meant to be a quantum improvement
over the early P2E games of the time.
§ We are still waiting for these promises to be delivered, though these titles
should be close to coming to fruition after two years of development.
§ While high fidelity trailers may garner eyeballs, devs shouldn’t lose sight that
it’s ultimately gameplay and tokenomics that will keep gamers coming back.
§ Perhaps more healthy skepticism is reserved for the traditional Web2
gaming studios who have invested heavily into developing their own
blockchain games, and should theoretically have the experience and
resources to deliver market-leading titles.
§ However thus far they have had to fend off accusations of these projects
being just lazy efforts at a money-grab, with no real thought given on
leveraging the benefits of the blockchain for their games.
§ A key lesson that should already be learnt from 2021 is around minimizing
the friction of gamers interacting with the blockchain, e.g. having to create
addresses, write down private keys, approve transactions, pay for gas.
Abstracting these away will help in onboarding even normie gamers.

Conclusion & Takeaways
§ Early crypto games actually launched way back in 2017, with CryptoKitties becoming the earliest craze, causing congestion on the
Ethereum network. CryptoKitties led to the creation of the ERC-721 NFT standard, and the first game-centric chain Flow.
§ The First GameFi Wave in 2021, ushered in by Axie Infinity and later StepN brought new GameFi trends such as Play-to-Earn (P2E)
and Move-to-Earn (M2E). Blockchain games across a variety of genres quickly followed, and quickly spread beyond Ethereum onto
more performant chains with cheaper gas fees.
§ While most of these games eventually collapsed due to overly-simplistic gameplay and unsustainable tokenomics, a few of
them such as Alien Worlds, Farmers World, Splinterlands and Axie Infinity have survived until today, albeit with a much smaller
community of active addresses. Compared to the peak of GameFi in November 2021, the number of active participating
addresses have declined by 57.9% to 837k.
§ Farming / mining, move-to-earn, and card games represent the most active genres today. They are more casual, have relatively
simpler gameplay mechanics, are less technically demanding, and doesn’t require overly sophisticated tokenomics.
§ Looking under the hood at the underlying blockchain infrastructure, gasless chains such as Wax, Skale, and Hive, as well as game-
centric chains such as Sui, Flow, and Ronin have become popular with blockchain gamers. However, activity on these chains are still
relatively small in scale compared to more generalized chains such as Polygon and BNB Smart Chain.
§ When examining the Top 10 GameFi governance tokens by market cap, most of them are still from games launched in 2021. Despite
significant declines in 2022, the price of most of these governance tokens are still up compared to their launch price. However as of
December 1, 2023, they haven’t yet seen significant gains from the recent bull cycle.
§ The successes in 2021 spurred an explosion of investments into GameFi, notably by firms like Animoca Brands, as well as Web2
Game Studios. However, we have not seen much of the results of these investments, though the next generation of game titles
should be approaching release after more than two years of development.
§ Meanwhile, research and development has begun for fully on-chain games, which promises to deliver autonomous worlds with
infinite extensibility, but there are still significant technical challenges to be overcome.
