in 20–25 urban clusters by 2030.
 logistics support infrastructure
in India’s metros is inadequate
for serving existing trade needs.
 The growth of urban centers in
size and number would
necessitate the need for a
proactive approach in logistics
planning to sustain growth.
Mega Cities: 13
Industrial Clusters: 27
 Growth in the domestic
manufacturing and retail segments
has given impetus to the demand
for efficient warehouse-management
services.
 Existing small warehouses need to
be replaced by large, modern
warehouses that incorporate global
standards.
 Existing infrastructure needs to be
upgraded to increase throughput.
Logistic costs in India
 Air Cargo is Vital in Linking International
Markets.
 The total volume of air cargo traffic
currently constitutes about 1 percent of total
trade and accounts percent of Total Trade
Value.
 The Open Sky policy adopted in the early
1990s, allowed carriers to operate both
scheduled and non-scheduled cargo services
between all airports in India.
 Between 2006 and 2012, air cargo traffic
handled at Indian airports increased at a
CAGR of 11.5 %
 Over the next decade, total air cargo traffic
is expected to grow at a CAGR of 10.3%
 India’s Ports facilitate 90% by volume and 70% by
value of India’s external trade via maritime traffic.
 India’s coastline spans across 7,500 Km with 13 major
ports and about 176 non-major ports.
 The Indian port market has witnessed significant
growth over the last decade, growing at 8.5%
 The Maritime Agenda 2010–2020 is aimed at
 Growth of Non-Major Ports,
 Increased Containerization, and
 Improvisation of East Coast ports.
 The GoI plans to invest INR2,870 billion in generating
total port capacity of 3,200 MMT.
 The public-private partnership is expected to play an
important role in the development of non-major ports.
 The EXIM container market in India has grown at a
CAGR of 12 percent in the past five years.
 The East coast contribution in India’s total trade is
expected to increase from 23% in 2010 to 34% in 2014.
 The demand for warehousing in India was estimated
at approximately Rs. 245–270 billion in 2011–12.
 The share of the industrial segment, is expected to
increase from about 86 percent in 2010–11 to around
90 percent in 2015–16.
 The highest growth is expected from engineering
goods, and IT, electronics and telecommunications
sectors, estimated to grow at CAGRs of about 8.6 and
8.2 percent.
 The share of modern warehousing is anticipated to
grow to 30% by 2015.
 Spanning 64,456 km with more
than 7,133 railway stations,
India’s rail network is the largest
in Asia.
 The Indian Railways operates
19,000 trains daily, transporting
2.65 MMT of freight everyday.
Rail freight has grown at around 7 percent over the
past five years, and is expected touch the 1 billion ton
mark in 2013.
As compared to global standards, India’s track length
per sq. km. is unfavorable at 44 km of track per 1,000 sq.
km. 137 km and 417 km in US and Germany.
 The project envisages the construction of two corridors,
one each on the west and east routes, spanning a total
length of about 3,300 km.
 Freight via the DFC would increase from 140 MMT in 2016–
17 to 182 MMT in 2021–22 at a CAGR of 5.4 percent.
 Container traffic on the Western DFC, is expected to grow
from 3.8 million TEUs in 2016–17 to 5.3 million TEUs in
2021–22.
 In a ‘No-DFC scenario’ freight would continue to move
along existing rail and road network resulting in gradual
saturation of the rail network over a period of time.
 Indian Roadways account for 60 percent of total
freight movement in the country.
 Over the next five-year period, road freight is expected
to grow at a CAGR of 9.6%
 Roads continue to lag behind world averages, with
road density at 2.83 km/1,000 people compared to the
world average of 6.7 Km/1000 people.
 India’s low average trucking speed of 30–40 Kmph as
against the global average of 60–80 kmph.
 The National Highways Development
Programme, aims to developing
50,000 km of National Highways by
2015 in seven phases with an
investment of Rs 3,000Bn.
 Investments in the road sector is
likely to double in the 12th Five year
plan.
 To encourage private players, the
Government has announced several
incentives such as:
 100 percent tax exemptions in any
consecutive 10 years.
 Duty free imports of certain identified
construction plants and equipment.
 FDI of up to 100%
 Water as a mode of cargo movement contributes only 8% by
volume of the India’s cargo movement.
 Fuel consumption for every ton-kilometer of freight shipped is
only 15 percent of that by road and 54 percent of that by rail.
 From a cost perspective, shipping costs 21 percent of that by road
and 42 percent of that by rail.
 Coastal shipping and inland waterways transportation are the
two significant modes of domestic shipping.
 Growing at 7.2% over the past five years, IWT cargo
traffic was estimated at 79 MMT in 2011–12.
 India is home to 14,500 km of navigable inland
waterways, of which 5,200 km of major rivers and 485
km of canals are conducive to the movement of
mechanized vessels.
 India has a vast coastline of 7,500 Km, and yet India’s
costal shipping potential remains significantly
underutilized.
 Coastal shipping is a feasible option for movement
between most ports on the west and east coasts .
 India is at a crossroads of Changing Paradigms and
Global Integration.
 New Trade requirements make it mandatory to
standardize and regularize the process and practices of
logistics in India.
 Freight Forwarding, Port Optimization, PPP, FDI,
DFC, and IWT are some key avenues that should be
taken into consideration for improvement of Indian

Game changers of Logistics in India

  • 1. TV, Shreeharsha; Singh, Satyam Pratap; Kundan, Preetam; R, Nithin; Ahmed, Ghufran AIM, New Delhi 29th Aug, 2014
  • 2.  Introduction  What’s Changing the Status Quo?  Sector Specificities  Recommendations  Conclusion
  • 3.  India’s nominal GDP could grow to USD 3.6 trillion by 2020 at an annual growth rate of 9%.  India’s crude steel production is expected to increase by a factor of 4 by 2030,  The demand for cement in the country is expected to double by 2030.  Agricultural output to grow by 42.5% by 2020.  The Indian textiles industry is expected to triple to US$220 billion by 2020.  The share of organized retail is expected to increase to 24 percent by 2020.
  • 4.  It is anticipated that more than 60 percent of India’s urban population will be concentrated in 20–25 urban clusters by 2030.  logistics support infrastructure in India’s metros is inadequate for serving existing trade needs.  The growth of urban centers in size and number would necessitate the need for a proactive approach in logistics planning to sustain growth. Mega Cities: 13 Industrial Clusters: 27
  • 5.  Growth in the domestic manufacturing and retail segments has given impetus to the demand for efficient warehouse-management services.  Existing small warehouses need to be replaced by large, modern warehouses that incorporate global standards.  Existing infrastructure needs to be upgraded to increase throughput.
  • 7.
  • 8.  Air Cargo is Vital in Linking International Markets.  The total volume of air cargo traffic currently constitutes about 1 percent of total trade and accounts percent of Total Trade Value.  The Open Sky policy adopted in the early 1990s, allowed carriers to operate both scheduled and non-scheduled cargo services between all airports in India.  Between 2006 and 2012, air cargo traffic handled at Indian airports increased at a CAGR of 11.5 %  Over the next decade, total air cargo traffic is expected to grow at a CAGR of 10.3%
  • 9.
  • 10.  India’s Ports facilitate 90% by volume and 70% by value of India’s external trade via maritime traffic.  India’s coastline spans across 7,500 Km with 13 major ports and about 176 non-major ports.  The Indian port market has witnessed significant growth over the last decade, growing at 8.5%  The Maritime Agenda 2010–2020 is aimed at  Growth of Non-Major Ports,  Increased Containerization, and  Improvisation of East Coast ports.
  • 11.  The GoI plans to invest INR2,870 billion in generating total port capacity of 3,200 MMT.  The public-private partnership is expected to play an important role in the development of non-major ports.  The EXIM container market in India has grown at a CAGR of 12 percent in the past five years.  The East coast contribution in India’s total trade is expected to increase from 23% in 2010 to 34% in 2014.
  • 12.  The demand for warehousing in India was estimated at approximately Rs. 245–270 billion in 2011–12.  The share of the industrial segment, is expected to increase from about 86 percent in 2010–11 to around 90 percent in 2015–16.  The highest growth is expected from engineering goods, and IT, electronics and telecommunications sectors, estimated to grow at CAGRs of about 8.6 and 8.2 percent.  The share of modern warehousing is anticipated to grow to 30% by 2015.
  • 13.
  • 14.  Spanning 64,456 km with more than 7,133 railway stations, India’s rail network is the largest in Asia.  The Indian Railways operates 19,000 trains daily, transporting 2.65 MMT of freight everyday. Rail freight has grown at around 7 percent over the past five years, and is expected touch the 1 billion ton mark in 2013. As compared to global standards, India’s track length per sq. km. is unfavorable at 44 km of track per 1,000 sq. km. 137 km and 417 km in US and Germany.
  • 15.  The project envisages the construction of two corridors, one each on the west and east routes, spanning a total length of about 3,300 km.  Freight via the DFC would increase from 140 MMT in 2016– 17 to 182 MMT in 2021–22 at a CAGR of 5.4 percent.  Container traffic on the Western DFC, is expected to grow from 3.8 million TEUs in 2016–17 to 5.3 million TEUs in 2021–22.  In a ‘No-DFC scenario’ freight would continue to move along existing rail and road network resulting in gradual saturation of the rail network over a period of time.
  • 16.  Indian Roadways account for 60 percent of total freight movement in the country.  Over the next five-year period, road freight is expected to grow at a CAGR of 9.6%  Roads continue to lag behind world averages, with road density at 2.83 km/1,000 people compared to the world average of 6.7 Km/1000 people.  India’s low average trucking speed of 30–40 Kmph as against the global average of 60–80 kmph.
  • 17.  The National Highways Development Programme, aims to developing 50,000 km of National Highways by 2015 in seven phases with an investment of Rs 3,000Bn.  Investments in the road sector is likely to double in the 12th Five year plan.  To encourage private players, the Government has announced several incentives such as:  100 percent tax exemptions in any consecutive 10 years.  Duty free imports of certain identified construction plants and equipment.  FDI of up to 100%
  • 18.  Water as a mode of cargo movement contributes only 8% by volume of the India’s cargo movement.  Fuel consumption for every ton-kilometer of freight shipped is only 15 percent of that by road and 54 percent of that by rail.  From a cost perspective, shipping costs 21 percent of that by road and 42 percent of that by rail.  Coastal shipping and inland waterways transportation are the two significant modes of domestic shipping.
  • 19.  Growing at 7.2% over the past five years, IWT cargo traffic was estimated at 79 MMT in 2011–12.  India is home to 14,500 km of navigable inland waterways, of which 5,200 km of major rivers and 485 km of canals are conducive to the movement of mechanized vessels.  India has a vast coastline of 7,500 Km, and yet India’s costal shipping potential remains significantly underutilized.  Coastal shipping is a feasible option for movement between most ports on the west and east coasts .
  • 20.
  • 21.  India is at a crossroads of Changing Paradigms and Global Integration.  New Trade requirements make it mandatory to standardize and regularize the process and practices of logistics in India.  Freight Forwarding, Port Optimization, PPP, FDI, DFC, and IWT are some key avenues that should be taken into consideration for improvement of Indian Logistics.
