They use their nuclear fuel quickly and end their lives by exploding as supernovae, leaving behind neutron stars or black holes. High-mass stars spend more time in the main sequence, using their fuel more slowly. They expand into giant stars and shed their outer layers, ending their lives as white dwarfs.
