TYPES
OF
WAVES
The repetitive motion that
you do with your hand
while waving is called
VIBRATION
WHAT IS A WAVE?
A wave is a traveling
disturbance that
transfers energy from
one place to another.
• Mechanical Wave
A mechanical wave is a wave that is an
oscillation of matter and is responsible
for the transfer of energy through a
medium.
TRANSVERSE WAVES
Transverse Waves- a transverse wave is a wave that
oscillates perpendicularly to the direction of the
wave's advance.
Crest-The top or highest part of something is also a
crest, like the crest of a hill or the crest of a wave.
Amplitude- a measurement of the amount of energy
transferred by a wave.
Trough- The lowest part is called the trough.
Wavelength- of a wave describes how long the wave
is.
Longitudinal Waves- are those waves in which the
particles of the medium move parallel to the
propagation of the wave.
Compression- in a longitudinal wave is a region
where the particles are the closest together.
Rarefaction-rarefaction in a longitudinal wave is a
region where the particles are spread out.
