About FYZOO
• We are located in Darica (border town of Kocaeli city just near by of Istanbul ) which is a seashore
town with green lands and fine wheather. Park is about 8 hectars where an additional of 5 hectars will
be added for new areas (addition to Apes&Monkeys, addition to African Savannah, new Asian Region,
    new Elephants Region) between 2014-2019.
• We exhibit around 250 animal species with a population of around 3.000 animals where over 180
species are endangered and over 60 are in CR-EN-VU-NT categories of IUCN. We host around 20
Anatolian endangered species. The number of animal species will be 280 species by the end of 2019.
• We host above 600 plant species with a population over 8.000. Within the park, more than 250 of
them are tree species and 70% of the collection is exotic. The plant collection includes medical plants
    including production.
• We are the first and only private Zoo which is a full-member of EAZA over 14 years and we are the
most experienced zoo within this context in Turkey.
• We are keeping the biggest animal and plant collection within national zoos in Turkey.
• We have an animal hospital and one of the largest quarantine area in accordance with European
    standards in Turkey.
• We are the only licenced zoo in Istanbul, Kocaeli, Sakarya, Duzce and Yalova cities (populates around
    25 million people)
• We are also licenced as a Wild Animal Conservation Rehabilitation and Rescue Center of Marmara
Region by the Ministry of Forestry and Water.
• Number of visitors are growing each year (2009: 160.000, 2010 : 335.000, 2011 : 535.000, 2012 :
650.000, 2013 target 715.000, where we have a social responsibility of disabled, poor and special
segments of the society needs aid so we have around 250.000 visitors unpaid each year.
FYZOO missions
- Ex-situ conservation of animal and plant species
- Efforts to improve quality and management standards of National Zoos and Aquaria by cooperating with General
Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks

- Collaborating with Governorship of Kocaeli, National Parks of Kocaeli, Metropolitan Municipality of Kocaeli, TEMA of
Kocaeli, Universities of Kocaeli, Istanbul, Thrace and Duzce, together with local people, scouts, hunters, for the in-situ
conservation development projects of Kocaeli region by analysis of regional biodiversity, management planning of
endangered regional animal and plat species, establishing a botanical garden and an arboretum with herbarium and
establishing re-introduction breeding stations for endangered wild animal species
- Cooperating with various foundations, associations and other establishments which are active in the field of nature
and environment conservation (TEMA, Doga Dernegi, TRAKUS, Hayrettin Karaca Vakfi, Turk Tabiatini Koruma Dernegi)
- Supporting international conservation projects through EAZA ( European Assosiation of Zoos and Aquaria)
- Collaborating with several Universities in scientific studies such as researches, thesis and case studies and
establishments like TUBITAK including in-vitro conservation projects when needed
- Educational activities to improve awareness and knowledge on Nature and Environment Conservation, Biological
Diversity, Conservation of Endangered Species and Botanics with interactive seminars and guided tour contents linked
with National Education Programme for all schools in Istanbul, Kocaeli, Sakarya, Duzce and Yalova with capacity of
    upto 300.000 students per year (2011 and 2012 realised : 175.000 and 150.000 students/year)
- Collaborative events with Fine Arts Faculty of Kocaeli University and various individual artisits (ebru art, wood art,
painting, musical performances, theathers, etc.) on the basis of nature, animals and plants themes
- Carrying out social and cultural activities (painting, composition, photography, theater, wall painting, debates,
seminars, presentations, etc) with Cultural and Social Centers, Schools and Establishments under conservation,
    education themes
FYZOO Education Department
- FYZOO Education Department consists of an education manager, 2 education officers and 4-12 guides.
- Every year, education department signatures protocol with five different cities’ directorate of national
education(İstanbul, Kocaeli, Sakarya, Duzce and Yalova). So that schools can visit to our zoo without any
    problems.
- In accordance with protocol, we prepare interactive education seminars about Protecting Naturel Life,
Biodiversity, Conservation of Endangered Species and Botanics at five different age categories.

We tell importance of natural life and conserving her to the students. Than, they visit to our zoo with guides.
Generally, training content includes to love of nature, protection of evironment, human effects of
evironmental pollution , extincting animal , how living things are affected by pollution , the importance of
    water and naturel life-cycle .
- In 2010, 140.000 students visited to our zoo. In 2011, 175.000 and in 2012, 150.000.
- Annual zoo members is our responsibility where we have over 7.800 members (members pay %10 less than 2
invidual entrance fees for the whole year), creates over 4% of total turnover.
FYZOO Education Department
- This year, we have created new education activities for students.
          ● Firstly, students are both informed and entertained orienteering games. We created some questions
about animals and botanics than gave each questions to different students and they tried to find answers of
      the questions in the zoo.
         ● Another education activity is discovering insects within the park. While students were visiting to zoo
within biologist, dug the soil in certain areas and tried to find bugs. Than biologist give some informations
about soil, insect and botanic to students.
-This year, we added new educations seminar for disabled students. That seminar is about living things around us.
We were teached interesting information about how can we give the seminar to disable students.
-When schools’ groups visited to our zoo, they were taking seminar about applied botanics. Than groups visited in
botanical tours within guide. Students could learn how do they grow plants. They prepare soil, put seeds and water
them and ventilate the soil guided by our gardeners.
-The information boards are put in front of the cages and plants for having information about animals and plants,
so the visitors both can find their directions and read a lot of small informations about nature with prepared
routing boards.
FYZOO Education Department
- We organize competitions with different directorate of national education on different age categories for
creating awareness on topic as evironmental protection, love of nature and extincting animals…etc.

- In hobby park which we have created in children zoo in FYZOO, we prepare interesting funny activity as
figuring, painting, sand painting, T-shirt painting, the art of marbling, face painting… etc.
- During this year, we organized instructive and educative activities with directorate of national education, the
ministry of forest and water and TEMA… etc. For example, in last forest week, 6000 students visited to our zoo
by free and we gave a tree to each students. Than there was a theatre show for students about forest week.

Importance of Anatolia
Turkey is one of the few countries in the world, having a rich diversity of flora and fauna
located in three different climate zone with three different vegetation geography (Euro-
Sibirian, Meditteranean, Iran-Turan). Due to climatologic and geological changes, Anatolia had
been a protected shelter for many species. It has also been a genetic center especially for sub
species and sub-sub species, as it has been a corridor between continents.

26% of the country covered by forests and 93% of them are natural forests. Turkey is a
highland country with an average height around 1.300 meters. Mountains along North and
South Anatolia are divided by stream river valleys. Intensive diversity of flora and fauna with
various microclimates can be observed due to climatologic and geomorphologic structure.

Turkey has 25% of all endemic plants in the World. Nearly 30% of agri-plants in the World are
originally spread from this land. Today, Anatolia has around 12.000 plant species where 3.500
of them (35%) are endemic. 9,000 of them are phanerograms and ferns. 600 of them are
ligneous where 80 are endemic. Around 800 are geofit plants.

Those numbers are very close to the total numbers of species in the whole European
continent, showing the importance of Anatolia to the World for conserving its biodiversity and
plant and animal diversity. As approved by a lot of researchers, Anatolia has been a paradies
of rich subspecies.
Importance of Anatolia
Ethnobotanical studies reveal regions of the world's oldest plant domestication around BC 7.000,
in Catalhoyuk, Can Hasan, Hacıiar, Mersin and Cayonu.
Anatolian flora is covered by cultivated wild relatives of important agricultural plant species and
genetic diversity of this species.(wheat, chickpeas, lentils, apples, pears, apricots, chestnuts,
pistachios). One can say 30% of all field crops originated from Anatolia.
In the forest ecosystem in our country has 20 species of wild fruit trees, more than 10 species of
vegetable, 14 species of medicinal plant, 5 species of forage plant, 17 ornamental plants.
Anatolia host about 800 geofit plants (bulbous, tuberous, rhizome). Our country is the center of
origin of more than 30 fruit species. Species of cherry, apricot, almond and fig fatherland is
Anatolia, in addition to tulips, orchids, crocuses and snowdrops.
Anatolia host about 19.000 invertebrate species (4000 of them are endemic) and about 1500
vertebrate species which has a nearly the diversity of species in the whole European continent.
At the bottom of the world's most important migration routes in our country host 460 resident and
migratory bird species. All the European continent has 560 species. In addition, approximately, in
our country 480 marine fish species, 236 freshwater fish species (70 endemic), 141 reptiles (16
endemic) and 202 mammals (37 percent endemic) and 37 amphibians that are specified.
Currently, 12% of birds, %22 of mammals, 28% of reptiles, %30 of amphibians, %37 of invertebrates
and 70% of the plants are under threat of extinction.
Importance of Kocaeli
As Kocaeli is the neighbour of Istanbul and because of increasing urbanisation and heavy industrialisation, threats
to shrinkage of biodiversity, habitats and nature need critical attention. Kocaeli is on the migration way of birds,
conservation of nature (forest lands, the Gulf, Sapanca lake, etc) needs to be planned and actions should be
taken. As predators are in the highest level of food cycle in ecosystems, they are critically important for the cycle.
Wolves, Lynxs, Bears should be conserved within their habitats due to this reason. Herbivores like Roe deers, Red
deers, Fallow Deers should also be conserved as their population is critically decreased in the region. Population
increase in Herbivores will also improve the population of Carnivores and supports Kocaeli in hunting tourism by
controlled hunting seasons.
Kocaeli with 3.505 km2 of land, its mountains cover 18,8 % of its land. Samanli Mountains are in the West-East
direction with 130 kms long and 30 kms wide. 6,6% are wetlands (lake, the Gulf area and creeks and their
wetland surroundings. Platos covers 74,6 % of the land and are generally erosed plains cut by many valleys
caused by many small creeks. From North to South, Euro-Sibirian (Blacksea) vegetation starts to meet
Mediterranean and/or Dry land (Iran-Touran) vegetations. Lands between Samanlı Mountains in the South and
Black Sea Shores arew covered by dense and humid forests.
42,1 % of Kocaeli land is forestry area where 93,3 % of them are natural forests. 36% is agricultural land, 3,4% is
grassland and hayfield. In parallel to its wide natural and forestry lands, Kocaeli, with its more than 1,5 million
human population, is the second largest GNP producer of the country by its huge industry, banking and research
and development bases. Kocaeli is one of the very rare examples where high level of industrialisation meets with
a high level of natural lands.
Kocaeli currently owns six Natural Parks and new seven parks will be coming.
Darıca : We invite you to take a deep breath

  • 13. Importance of Anatolia Turkey is one of the few countries in the world, having a rich diversity of flora and fauna located in three different climate zone with three different vegetation geography (Euro- Sibirian, Meditteranean, Iran-Turan). Due to climatologic and geological changes, Anatolia had been a protected shelter for many species. It has also been a genetic center especially for sub species and sub-sub species, as it has been a corridor between continents. 26% of the country covered by forests and 93% of them are natural forests. Turkey is a highland country with an average height around 1.300 meters. Mountains along North and South Anatolia are divided by stream river valleys. Intensive diversity of flora and fauna with various microclimates can be observed due to climatologic and geomorphologic structure. Turkey has 25% of all endemic plants in the World. Nearly 30% of agri-plants in the World are originally spread from this land. Today, Anatolia has around 12.000 plant species where 3.500 of them (35%) are endemic. 9,000 of them are phanerograms and ferns. 600 of them are ligneous where 80 are endemic. Around 800 are geofit plants. Those numbers are very close to the total numbers of species in the whole European continent, showing the importance of Anatolia to the World for conserving its biodiversity and plant and animal diversity. As approved by a lot of researchers, Anatolia has been a paradies of rich subspecies.
  • 14. Importance of Anatolia Ethnobotanical studies reveal regions of the world's oldest plant domestication around BC 7.000, in Catalhoyuk, Can Hasan, Hacıiar, Mersin and Cayonu. Anatolian flora is covered by cultivated wild relatives of important agricultural plant species and genetic diversity of this species.(wheat, chickpeas, lentils, apples, pears, apricots, chestnuts, pistachios). One can say 30% of all field crops originated from Anatolia. In the forest ecosystem in our country has 20 species of wild fruit trees, more than 10 species of vegetable, 14 species of medicinal plant, 5 species of forage plant, 17 ornamental plants. Anatolia host about 800 geofit plants (bulbous, tuberous, rhizome). Our country is the center of origin of more than 30 fruit species. Species of cherry, apricot, almond and fig fatherland is Anatolia, in addition to tulips, orchids, crocuses and snowdrops. Anatolia host about 19.000 invertebrate species (4000 of them are endemic) and about 1500 vertebrate species which has a nearly the diversity of species in the whole European continent. At the bottom of the world's most important migration routes in our country host 460 resident and migratory bird species. All the European continent has 560 species. In addition, approximately, in our country 480 marine fish species, 236 freshwater fish species (70 endemic), 141 reptiles (16 endemic) and 202 mammals (37 percent endemic) and 37 amphibians that are specified. Currently, 12% of birds, %22 of mammals, 28% of reptiles, %30 of amphibians, %37 of invertebrates and 70% of the plants are under threat of extinction.
  • 15. Importance of Kocaeli As Kocaeli is the neighbour of Istanbul and because of increasing urbanisation and heavy industrialisation, threats to shrinkage of biodiversity, habitats and nature need critical attention. Kocaeli is on the migration way of birds, conservation of nature (forest lands, the Gulf, Sapanca lake, etc) needs to be planned and actions should be taken. As predators are in the highest level of food cycle in ecosystems, they are critically important for the cycle. Wolves, Lynxs, Bears should be conserved within their habitats due to this reason. Herbivores like Roe deers, Red deers, Fallow Deers should also be conserved as their population is critically decreased in the region. Population increase in Herbivores will also improve the population of Carnivores and supports Kocaeli in hunting tourism by controlled hunting seasons. Kocaeli with 3.505 km2 of land, its mountains cover 18,8 % of its land. Samanli Mountains are in the West-East direction with 130 kms long and 30 kms wide. 6,6% are wetlands (lake, the Gulf area and creeks and their wetland surroundings. Platos covers 74,6 % of the land and are generally erosed plains cut by many valleys caused by many small creeks. From North to South, Euro-Sibirian (Blacksea) vegetation starts to meet Mediterranean and/or Dry land (Iran-Touran) vegetations. Lands between Samanlı Mountains in the South and Black Sea Shores arew covered by dense and humid forests. 42,1 % of Kocaeli land is forestry area where 93,3 % of them are natural forests. 36% is agricultural land, 3,4% is grassland and hayfield. In parallel to its wide natural and forestry lands, Kocaeli, with its more than 1,5 million human population, is the second largest GNP producer of the country by its huge industry, banking and research and development bases. Kocaeli is one of the very rare examples where high level of industrialisation meets with a high level of natural lands. Kocaeli currently owns six Natural Parks and new seven parks will be coming.
