AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL GROUP (AIG)
is a global leader in the insurance industry,
serving more than 130 countries and
jurisdictions – and, in Charmaine Tan, it
boasts one of procurement’s most
outstanding future talents.
It took Tan just six months to rebrand
procurement in Japan, successfully
transforming the function’s image and
increasing its influence in the previously
untouched marketing area. Through the
construction of an innovative contractual
framework between AIG and its marketing
agencies, with performance-based
incentives, Tan was able to drive through
significant commercial objectives, which
not only made a real and genuine difference
to the business, but also singled her out as
someone of rare ability.
She has, one judge commented, ‘clearly
made a great impact very early in her
career’. After changing the focus from both
a marketing and procurement perspective,
it’s also apparent that Tan has far more to
offer as AIG continues to move forward. n
