This document discusses the academization of design and its consequences for practice-based design research. It addresses how design identities are impacted by academic legitimization, and how this can marginalize the mix of artifactual, textual and visual elements that characterize practice-based design research. The document examines strategies from academic literacy studies that can help make transparent the research process in design. It provides three case studies of design students that exemplify using visualizations to mediate conversations about the research process.
