Frogs undergo a process called metamorphosis where they hatch from eggs as tadpoles living in water, develop legs and lungs on land, and transform into adult frogs that live both on land and in water. The document reviews the stages of a frog's life cycle from egg to tadpole to froglet and provides links to a website for more information on frogs and their metamorphosis.
3. Amphibian=Double Life
Frogs are called
Amphibians.
During their life, they
live both in the water
and on land.
The change that
takes place is called
metamorphosismetamorphosis.
4. A man walks in to a doctor’s office
with a frog on his head.
The doctor leaps up and says:
"Good grief, how on earth did you get
that great ugly thing!“
The frog looks down and replies:
"I dunno Doc, it started out as a little
wart on my bottom!"

5. Process of
Metamorphosis
Frogs lay eggs in water,
often numbering in the
hundreds or thousands.
The eggs are covered with a
jelly-like substance which
allows them to adhere to
plants or other vegetation.
In about 4 days, the eggs
hatch into tiny fish-like
tadpoles that have gills,
like fish, to allow them to
breathe in the water.
6. Legs begin to sprout from the tadpole’s
body and the tail becomes smaller.
The internal organs of the Froglet begin
to change to allow life on land.
7. How many frogs does it take
to screw in a light bulb?
One frog and 37 light bulbs.
Slippery hands, ya’ know.

Metamorphosis is Complete!
Amphibian = Greek word meaning double life Questions: Do you know any other animals, or creatures, that have a “ double ” life like the frog? Give examples – compare and contrast (butterfly) (Students will be directed to take notes during this time in a booklet that will be used throughout the frog unit.)
Commercial break . . .
Eggs: fertilized outside of the frog ’ s body have brown centers Tadpoles: greenish brown with reddish-black markings grow quickly eat algae or tiny organisms in the water many eaten by fish, birds or other frogs
Tadpole: tail is actually absorbed into the body lungs begin to develop to allow it to breathe out of water intestines change to allow for different type of food (from grazing to meat-eating) easily gets disease during transition period Frog: green with yellow stripe down its side red eyes moves back into water to begin process all over again

Students will have a similar diagram in their booklet in which they will transfer this information.
