Frans Hals was a famous Dutch painter from the 17th century Renaissance period known for his portraits, especially of children. Some of his most renowned works include The Laughing Cavalier and The Gypsy Girl. Hals' portraits were unique for the time in that he often depicted his subjects smiling, which was unusual as smiling faces were then seen as silly. He achieved fame for his skill in oil painting portraits.
