Presentation - How the music videos of my artist have changed (French Montana)
1. French Montana
French Montana, is an American rapper born in Morocco.
Throughout his career he has stayed true to himself through
his music and hasn’t undergone the ‘change’ that most
rappers go through when they ‘make it’. However he has
changed slightly within his music due to the money he
earns.

This is one of French Montana's first music videos. It is narrative based video
featuring French Montana and Waka Flocka Flame rapping about how they have
“choppa’s” (AK-47 or an automatic weapon) and how they run the town.
The video shows both French and Waka as soldiers, both of which being a sergeant
as you can see by the 3 stripes within the screenshots. This is a moderately high
rank within the army, as they will often control a small division of troops, which is
reflected within the video as there are many shot with French and Waka with a
small group of people/soldiers.
This music video peaked at 198,807 views on YouTube showing that French is only
at the start of his career.
3. “Shot Caller”
•
•
•
“Shot caller” was film shortly after “Choppa Choppa Down”. This music video
features Charlie Rock and French Montana rapping about how women want
someone who is in power and tells other people what to do. Similar to “Choppa
Choppa Down” French Montana is portrayed as a ‘shot caller’ (an individual in a
gang who has a high status) that has full control over his territory.
He unofficially features rappers such as Waka Flocka Flame, P Diddy, Fat Joe and
Busta Rhymes who are all seen in the rap game as ‘shot callers’. The clothes and
jewellery that French Montana and other people wear within the music video are
all expensive, which reinforces the ‘shot caller’ image that they are trying to show.
Within this music video we don’t see dramatic change with French Montana
however we can see that he is starting to get ‘bigger’ in the rap game due to the
other artists that he feature and that the music video peaked at 9,675,885 views.
4. “Sanctuary”
•
•
•
“Sanctuary” is one of French Montana's most recent music videos, it shows him as
a successful that he is today. The music video has various shots of him on a sofa in
some of the most expensive designer clothes and custom jewellery. This is because
the song is about him coming from nothing ,getting shot in the head and surviving
just so he can be where he is today.
There are also many close ups of showing him in his past, such as when he was
addicted and selling drugs and when he was shot in the head. This shows the
contrast from him back then to where he is today.
Within this music video we see minor changes in French Montana, including the
money he has gained .
5. Overview
• Throughout French Montana's career his audience have witnessed the
minor personality changes through his music videos and practically all of
them have stayed with him. through his videos French has become
progressively less aggressive with his lyrics and showing his street lifestyle.
This is shown if you look at all 3 music videos as within the first one, he is
with a gang of people talking about ‘choppas’. Within the second we see
him gain more money and rap more about women than violence. Finally
his third video we see him relaxing on a sofa, after he has ‘made it’ and
has even more money whilst rapping about his life in the past.
• This shows how he has developed through his music videos alongside his
audience.
