How Does a Liquid Turn Into a Solid?
Have you ever held a glass of water outside on a cold day, and looked down to
discover that your water has now formed some ice? Have you ever wondered
how an icicle is formed? Why does it only happen when it becomes cold
outside?
So what happened to the water? Is it still water or did it become something
else entirely? Once again, our object has become a completely different state
of matter!
The Glass of Water Became…
The water within that glass has actually become a solid!
A solid is a state of matter that has a specific volume
and shape, unlike a liquid. You encounter solids every
day! Everything from the pencil you write with to the
book you are reading is a solid. So how exactly did that
liquid become a solid?
The temperature is falling…
The reason that water became an ice cube all has to due with
the temperature of the environment again! The water in the
glass went through a process called freezing. When an object
gets to a certain temperature, called the freezing point, that
objects undergoes freezing and turns from a liquid object into a
solid object! Now that we know how a liquid turns into a solid,
we can head back to our lesson!
