An avalanche occurred in the French Alps near the village of Montroc on February 9, 1999. Heavy snowfall and strong winds in the area triggered an avalanche that released 300,000 cubic meters of snow down the slope of Mount de Péclerey at speeds of up to 100 km/h. The avalanche destroyed 14 buildings and killed 14 people in Montroc. The mayor of Chamonix was later convicted of murder for failing to evacuate the area despite warnings, as new buildings had been constructed in a known avalanche path. A memorial cross was erected in memory of the victims.
