This document outlines the major historical periods in the Philippines and asks whether there were democratic traditions present. It describes the pre-Spanish, Spanish, American, Japanese periods, and republic era. The periods discussed are: pre-Spanish creation of man, 333 years of Spanish rule from 1521-1898, 48 years as an American territory from 1898-1946, 5 years of Japanese occupation from 1941-1945, and 66 years as an independent republic from 1946-2012.
