AMETHYST
GEMSTONE
FORMATION AND COMPOSITION
Formation: Amethyst typically forms within geodes or cavities in igneous
rocks, such as basalt or granite, as well as in hydrothermal veins. It
begins as colorless or transparent quartz crystals, known as rock crystal
or clear quartz. The purple coloration develops when iron impurities are
present during the crystal's formation. These impurities can come from
various sources, including surrounding minerals and groundwater.
1.
Composition: The chemical composition of amethyst is identical to that
of other quartz varieties, consisting mainly of silicon dioxide molecules
arranged in a repeating, hexagonal crystal lattice. However, the
presence of trace amounts of iron within this lattice is what gives
amethyst its characteristic purple hue. The intensity of the color can vary
widely, ranging from pale lavender to deep violet, depending on factors
such as the concentration of iron and the presence of other impurities.
2.
Color Variations: In addition to its primary purple coloration, amethyst
can exhibit various secondary hues, including red, blue, and pink. These
color variations are often influenced by factors such as the presence of
other minerals or exposure to radiation. Heat treatment can also be used
to enhance or alter the color of amethyst, although natural, untreated
specimens are typically more highly prized.
3.
Inclusions: Like other quartz varieties, amethyst can
contain a variety of inclusions, such as mineral
deposits, gas bubbles, or internal fractures. These
inclusions can affect the gemstone's clarity and
appearance but are also part of what makes each
specimen unique.
1.
Crystal Structure: Amethyst belongs to the trigonal
crystal system and typically forms prismatic
crystals with six-sided pyramids at each end. It has
a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale, making it
relatively durable and suitable for use in jewelry.
2.
Metaphysical Properties: In addition to its
geological properties, amethyst is also valued for its
perceived metaphysical properties. It is often
associated with spiritual growth, protection, and
emotional healing. Many people use amethyst for
meditation, relaxation, and enhancing intuition.
