Guidance is provided on the expected content and organization for each section to ensure consistency across departments and disciplines. The written research proposal will be created based on a narrowly defined aspect of the topic selected in Week One. A research proposal is a detailed plan for a specific study to be conducted at a future time. It is the document which potential researchers typically submit to an institutional review board (IRB) for ethical review and approval, and/or to funding agencies to secure financial support for a research effort. Because it is a plan for research which has not yet been conducted, the Methods section should be written in the future tense and should not contain any hypothetical results. The purpose of this paper is to offer accounting educators
additional perspectives for ethics education by considering teaching
approaches from medicine and law. It takes the form of literature
review and argument. The paper finds that ethics education in
accounting shows deficiencies in terms of code-bound content, less
systematic formal training, less informal hands-on training, and less
usage of partnering in comparison to ethics education in medicine
and law, thereby producing students with higher moral cognitive
capabilities. Based on these findings, the authors provide some

Before designing a proposal, it is important to have an idea of the general structure or outline of the topics and their order. The structure will differ depending on whether you write a quantitative, qualitative, or a mixed methods project. Another general consideration is to be aware of good writing practices that will help to ensure a consistent and highly readable proposal (or research project). Throughout the project, it is important to engage in ethical practices and to anticipate the ethical issues prior to the study that will likely arise. This chapter provides guidance for the overall structure of proposals or projects, writing practices that make projects easy to read, and ethical issues that need to be anticipated in research studies.
WRITING THE PROPOSAL
Arguments Presented in a Proposal
It is helpful to consider early in planning the study the major points that need to be addressed in a proposal. These points—or topics—all need to be interconnected to provide a cohesive picture of the entire project. For us, these topics seem to span all proposals, whether the project is qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods. We think that a good place to start is by examining Maxwell’s (2013) list of the core arguments that need to be advanced in any proposal. We will summarize them in our own words:
What do readers need to better understand your topic?
What do readers need to know about your topic?
What do you propose to study?
What is the setting, and who are the people you will study?
What methods do you plan to use to collect data?
How will you analyze the data?
How will you validate your findings?
What ethical issues will your study present?
What do preliminary results show about the practicability and value of the proposed study?
These nine questions, if adequately addressed in one section for each question, constitute the foundation of good research, and they could provide the overall structure for a proposal. The inclusion of validating findings, ethical considerations (to be addressed shortly), the need for preliminary results, and early evidence of practical significance focus a reader’s attention on key elements often overlooked in discussions about proposed projects.
Format for a Qualitative Proposal
Beyond these nine questions, it is also helpful to have an overall outline or general structure for topics that will be included in a proposal for a study. Unquestionably, in qualitative research, no one structure for a qualitative proposal prevails. We do think, however, that a couple of general outlines would be helpful, especially for the student who has never written a thesis or dissertation project. Here we propose two alternative models. Example 4.1 is drawn from a constructivist/interpretivist perspective whereas Example 4.2 is based more on a participatory–social justice model of qualitative research.

To begin, work through the reference list that was created in the "Section B: Problem Description" assignment in Module 2. Appraise each resource using the "Rapid Critical Appraisal Checklists," available in the textbook appendix or electronically on the textbook student resource CD-ROM. Develop a research table to organize and summarize the research studies. Using a summary table allows you to be more concise in your narrative description. Write a narrative of 750-1,000 words (not including the title page and references) that presents the research support for the projects problem and proposed solution. Make sure to do the following:
1) Include a description of the search method (e.g., databases, keywords, criteria for inclusion and exclusion, and number of studies that fit your criteria).
2) Summarize all of the research studies used as evidence. The essential components of each study need to be described so that readers can evaluate its scientific merit, including study strengths and limitations.
3) Incorporate a description of the validity of the internal and external research.
It is essential to make sure that the research support for the proposed solution is sufficient, compelling, relevant, and from peer-reviewed professional journal articles.
Although you will not be submitting the checklist information or the evaluation table you design in Module 3 with the narrative, the checklist information and evaluation table should be placed in the appendices for the final paper.

Chapter 2: Methodology (3300 words)
Design
Design refers to how your research study will be conducted and the reasons for your choice of study
methodology. You must label the methodology that you will employ e.g. quantitative – correlational or
qualitative – phenomenological. This methodology must be justified from the research literature. Enough
detail must be presented so that the reader can determine the adequacy of the methods. However, it is
important to remember that your proposal is not a theory paper on research methods. Your proposed
study must be central to the discussion with the research literature offering support to your proposed
choice.

You will need to provide details of your choice of sampling technique and sample size, as well as details
about the participants (i.e. age, gender, religion, medical conditions, employed, etc). Inclusion and
exclusion criteria must be stated along with the rationale for these decisions.

Any materials used in the study should be described in sufficient detail. This must also indicate how the

The purpose of this paper is to offer accounting educators
additional perspectives for ethics education by considering teaching
approaches from medicine and law. It takes the form of literature
review and argument. The paper finds that ethics education in
accounting shows deficiencies in terms of code-bound content, less
systematic formal training, less informal hands-on training, and less
usage of partnering in comparison to ethics education in medicine
and law, thereby producing students with higher moral cognitive
capabilities. Based on these findings, the authors provide some

Before designing a proposal, it is important to have an idea of the general structure or outline of the topics and their order. The structure will differ depending on whether you write a quantitative, qualitative, or a mixed methods project. Another general consideration is to be aware of good writing practices that will help to ensure a consistent and highly readable proposal (or research project). Throughout the project, it is important to engage in ethical practices and to anticipate the ethical issues prior to the study that will likely arise. This chapter provides guidance for the overall structure of proposals or projects, writing practices that make projects easy to read, and ethical issues that need to be anticipated in research studies.
WRITING THE PROPOSAL
Arguments Presented in a Proposal
It is helpful to consider early in planning the study the major points that need to be addressed in a proposal. These points—or topics—all need to be interconnected to provide a cohesive picture of the entire project. For us, these topics seem to span all proposals, whether the project is qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods. We think that a good place to start is by examining Maxwell’s (2013) list of the core arguments that need to be advanced in any proposal. We will summarize them in our own words:
What do readers need to better understand your topic?
What do readers need to know about your topic?
What do you propose to study?
What is the setting, and who are the people you will study?
What methods do you plan to use to collect data?
How will you analyze the data?
How will you validate your findings?
What ethical issues will your study present?
What do preliminary results show about the practicability and value of the proposed study?
These nine questions, if adequately addressed in one section for each question, constitute the foundation of good research, and they could provide the overall structure for a proposal. The inclusion of validating findings, ethical considerations (to be addressed shortly), the need for preliminary results, and early evidence of practical significance focus a reader’s attention on key elements often overlooked in discussions about proposed projects.
Format for a Qualitative Proposal
Beyond these nine questions, it is also helpful to have an overall outline or general structure for topics that will be included in a proposal for a study. Unquestionably, in qualitative research, no one structure for a qualitative proposal prevails. We do think, however, that a couple of general outlines would be helpful, especially for the student who has never written a thesis or dissertation project. Here we propose two alternative models. Example 4.1 is drawn from a constructivist/interpretivist perspective whereas Example 4.2 is based more on a participatory–social justice model of qualitative research.

The written research proposal will be created based on a narrowly defined aspect of the topic selected in Week One. A research proposal is a detailed plan for a specific study to be conducted at a future time. It is the document which potential researchers typically submit to an institutional review board (IRB) for ethical review and approval, and/or to funding agencies to secure financial support for a research effort. Because it is a plan for research which has not yet been conducted, the Methods section should be written in the future tense and should not contain any hypothetical results. The paper must address all of the components required in the Methods section of a research proposal. The following actions must be completed.
State the research question and/or hypothesis.
Briefly compare the characteristics of the major research paradigms used in previous studies on the chosen topic. Introduce the specific approach (qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods), research design, sampling strategy, data collection procedures, and data analysis techniques to be used in this study. Provide a short explanation as to why the selected procedures are more feasible than other alternatives for the research topic.
Describe any relevant variables, measures, and statistical tests.
Apply ethical principles and professional standards to the proposed psychological research. Provide an analysis of any ethical issues that may arise and explain how these issues will be resolved.
The following headings for the required sections and subsections must appear in the paper. In accordance with APA style, all references listed must be cited in the text of the paper.
Introduction
Introduce the research topic, explain why it is important, and present an appropriately and narrowly defined research question and/or hypothesis.
Literature Review
Evaluate the published research on the chosen topic including a minimum of three peer-reviewed articles. Summarize the current state of knowledge on the topic, making reference to the findings of previous research studies. Briefly mention the research methods that have previously been used to study the topic. State whether the proposed study is a replication of a previous study or a new approach employing methods that have not been used before. Be sure to properly cite all sources in APA style.

Design –
Create a feasible research design that incorporates appropriate methods to address the topic. Indicate whether the approach of the proposed study is qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods. Identify the specific research design, and indicate whether it is experimental or non-experimental. Evaluate the chosen design and explain why this design is feasible and appropriate for the topic and how it will provide the information needed to answer the research question. Cite sources on research methodology to support these choices. Include a minimum of two peer-reviewed sources.

To begin, work through the reference list that was created in the "Section B: Problem Description" assignment in Module 2. Appraise each resource using the "Rapid Critical Appraisal Checklists," available in the textbook appendix or electronically on the textbook student resource CD-ROM. Write a narrative of 750-1,000 words (not including the title page and references) that presents the research support for the projects problem and proposed solution. Make sure to do the following:
1) Include a description of the search method (e.g., databases, keywords, criteria for inclusion and exclusion, and number of studies that fit your criteria).
2) Summarize all of the research studies used as evidence. The essential components of each study need to be described so that readers can evaluate its scientific merit, including study strengths and limitations.
3) Incorporate a description of the validity of the internal and external research.
It is essential to make sure that the research support for the proposed solution is sufficient, compelling, relevant, and from peer-reviewed professional journal articles.
Although you will not be submitting the checklist information or the evaluation table you design in Module 3 with the narrative, the checklist information and evaluation table should be placed in the appendices for the final paper.
