Why gather right now?
by Pastor Mike
God intends to live among His people. He is holy and
therefore will live among a blameless and perfect people.
But who can claim to be that? We studied Exodus this past
year. The standard for right living proved unattainable and
the steps in atoning for sin were given. They were extensive
and involved but when the people consecrated themselves
we read that the glory of God descended on Mount Sinai,
the temporary tent of meeting and eventually on the
completed Tabernacle. So awesome was the presence of
God that the people stood at their tents in rapt attention,
cried in terror, fell on their face, reverently worshiped, and
asked Moses to cover his glowing face. Exodus could be
summed up with one phrase, “God’s people are saved for
God’s glory.”
Somehow we have accepted that Jesus did away with the
awesome God who induces holy fear in his people. Yahweh
of Exodus and the Old Testament is now relegated to a
children’s story with only moral relevance today. I am not
satisfied with that. Yahweh of the Old Testament is
unchanging from the beginning of human history to present.
He is an awesome God who formed creation with one
purpose - to receive our worship. The fear of the Lord is still
the beginning of knowledge - see Proverbs 1:7.
The requirement to enter his holy presence remains
unchanged since the Sinai desert. It is made possible
through Jesus Christ. Perfect living, achieving the sinless
standard, shedding of blood for the atonement of sin,
constant intercession, brokenness before God are all
achieved by Christ. This price paid by Jesus has begun to
dawn on me in a new way. I’m humbled and overwhelmed
and moved. I’ve been swept into worship of my King and
Savior, my Sustainer and Lover. In the past, worship had
been added to my week but it was not of the focus of my
very existence. Over this past month I have pressed into
daily worship. Not the limited devotional Bible reading but
building my day around extended communion with Jesus
Christ. Seeking him with all my being to the neglect of other
things. I’ve sought to fulfill the purpose for my existence
and the presence of Christ has met me in a way I’ve never
known before. I do not know what this will mean for Everett
Family Church. We’ve planned another month of this
sabbatical. I’m interceding for each
of you by name nearly every day
and trusting that God will sift our
hearts and discover the seekers
and worshipers of God among us.
And I pray that the Church might
become passionate and true
worshiper of the Bridegroom!
