Florence Nightingale
Early Life
o Florence Nightingale was born on
12 May 1820.
o She was named after the Italian
city of her birth where her
wealthy parents were on holiday.
o In 1837, Nightingale felt that God
was calling her to do some work
but wasn't sure what that work
should be.
o She began to develop an interest
in nursing, but her parents
considered it to be a profession
inappropriate to a woman of her
class and background.
Nursing Career
o in 1851, she went to Kaiserwerth in
Germany for three months nursing
training.
o Became superintendent of a
hospital for gentlewomen in Harley
Street, in 1853.
o The following year, the Crimean
War began and she was sought out
to oversee a team of nurses in the
military hospitals in Turkey.
o With her nurses, she greatly
improved the conditions and
substantially reduced the mortality
rate.
Her Significance
• Nightingale established nursing as a
respectable profession for women.
• She established the Nightingale Training
School for nurses at St Thomas' Hospital in
London.
• She helped to establish nursing theories and
practices which are still in existence today.
Sir Charlie Chaplin
• Born on 16th April 1889 in
London.
• Charlie and his half brother
spent their lives in and out of
charity homes and workhouses
between their mother's attacks
of insanity.
• Chaplin first set foot on the
stage at 5 years old after his
mother was booed off the
stage.

at the age of eight,
touring with The Eight
Lancashire Lads.
• At 18 he began touring
with Fred Karno's
vaudeville troupe.
• At 30, he helped he form
United Artists (UA) film
company.

• Chaplin was an actor, director, writer, producer, and film editor. He
appeared in 82 films throughout his 53 years in the industry and

as a genre.
• Charlie Chaplin inspired both pop culture, high
art and had a role in the development of the film
industry.
