Charlie Chaplin was an iconic English comedian and filmmaker who rose to fame in the silent film era. He is most recognized for his "Little Tramp" character with mustache, bowler hat, and cane. Chaplin began his career in vaudeville in England and came to prominence in the US with Keystone Studios in 1913. He went on to write, direct, and star in over 70 films while forming his own film studio. Though controversial, his films were hugely popular and influential. Chaplin married four times and had 11 children before dying in Switzerland in 1977 at age 88.
