CLUE A5: The only three flags which come alphabetically after Ukraine are
VANUATU (01), YEMEN (13) and Zambia (25), so these must be in D5, C5 and
B5 respectively.
CLUE E5: The country in E4 contains all of the letters of UKRAINE somewhere
within its name. This can only mean that it is TURKMENISTAN.
Clue C5 & D5: Each country in Column C shares a land border with the one above it
and they are in alphabetical order. D5 tells us that there is only a single letter’s
difference between C1 and C2. Ireland and Iceland are ruled out, as they do not form a
border chain with Yemen, so C1 and C2 must be IRAN (23) and IRAQ (10). The only way
of getting from Jordan to Yemen via two countries that are in the quiz in alphabetical
order is via JORDAN (07) and SAUDI ARABIA (15), so these must be in C3 and C4.
CLUE C2: We know that all of the countries in Row 3 form a
border chain with Jordan in the middle. These countries are also
in alphabetical order, so A3, B3, D3 and E3 must be EGYPT (19),
ISRAEL (08), SYRIA (04) and TURKEY (21) respectively.
CLUE E4: Every ‘I’ country in the world is in the quiz, so Indonesia must be one of
them. This means that flag 14 must be Indonesia and not Monaco.
CLUE A5: The countries going clockwise round the outside of the grid from Bangladesh
are in alphabetical order. The only three countries in the quiz which fall alphabetically
in between Egypt and Iran are ICELAND (06), INDIA (24) and INDONESIA (14), so these
must be in A2, A1 and B1 respectively.
CLUE A1: The four flags with only blue and yellow are KAZAKHSTAN, PALAU,
SWEDEN and UKRAINE. As these are all located on the outside of the grid,
they must also come in clockwise alphabetical order (CLUE A5), so D1, E1 and
E2 must be KAZAKHSTAN (22), PALAU (09) and SWEDEN (03) respectively.
CLUE A5: The only country in the quiz that is alphabetically in between Bangladesh and Egypt is DOMINICA (11),
so this must be in A4.
CLUE C3: From top to bottom, the countries in Columns 2 and 4 are in alphabetical order. Given that Column 4
starts with Kazakhstan, the only 2 remaining countries that can possibly go in Column 2 are IRELAND (05) in B2
and ITALY (12) in B4. This leaves Norway and Togo in Column 4, and the column must run from top to bottom in
alphabetical order, so NORWAY (16) is in D2 and TOGO (02) is in D4.
CLUES B2, C1 and B5: These clues are not strictly necessary to solve the puzzle, but they are confirmed by the
final answer and might have helped at an earlier stage.
