This document describes a logic puzzle where the goal is to fill in a 5x5 grid of countries based on clues about borders and country names/characteristics. It provides 12 stages of reasoning to arrive at the solution, determining the country that belongs in each grid space through a process of elimination based on the clues and what countries must border each other.

A pen and paper would be very useful to help with this logic
game. An atlas or access to Google Maps is indispensable.

2. The direction to follow is shown by the arrows. Each country will border
the next one. TRY TO KEEP REFERRING BACK TO THIS CLUE AND REFER TO
Stage 1 AN ATLAS – THIS WILL SOLVE SEVERAL AREAS OF POTENTIAL CONFUSION.
3. Clue F5: There are only 5 countries that begin with K that can be visited
without crossing water, i.e. Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kosovo, Kuwait and Kyrgyzstan
Stage 2 (Kiribati having no borders.) The only one of these which is two borders away
from Djibouti is KENYA, so this must be in C1.The only country to border
Kenya that has a K capital is UGANDA (Kampala), so this is in D1.
4. Stage 3
Stage 3 The only ‘K’ country that is two borders away from Israel is KUWAIT, so this
must be in C5. D1 has told us that Turkmenistan is not in the quiz, so the
information in C5 – i.e. that the letters K U A I and T are in B4’s country can
only mean that this is UZBEKISTAN.
5. Clue B4: B1 begins with a consonant and must share a border with Kenya and
Djibouti. This can only mean that it is SOMALIA.
Stage 4
Clue B1: If B2 was once part of the former Yugoslavia and C2 begins with K, the
latter can only be KOSOVO, as it must share a border with the country in B2.
6. Stage 5 Clue C2: The only 6 letter country which borders Kosovo is SERBIA, so this must be in D2.
Clue D2: D5 begins with S, ends with A, and borders Kuwait, so this can only by SAUDI
ARABIA. We are also told that A5 begins with S and ends with A. The only country to
which this applies that is two borders away from Kuwait is SYRIA, so this must be in A5.
7. The only country to share a border with both Syria and Kuwait is IRAQ, so this is in B5.
Stage 6 The only country to share a border with both Saudi Arabia and Israel is JORDAN, so this is in E5.
Although it could have been ascertained earlier, the only way to get from the African Countries in
Row 1 by land (inc bridges) is via Egypt, crossing its border with Israel, so F4 can only be EGYPT.
8. Clue A5: E2 borders Serbia and has a virtually identical flag to F2, which must logically be in Africa
Stage 8 (en route between Tanzania and Egypt). Therefore, C2 is ROMANIA and F2 is CHAD.
Clue E2: C3 and C4 both begin with K and the latter is larger than the former, so C4 must be
KAZAKHSTAN and C3 can only be KRGYZSTAN.
9. Stage 9 Clue D5: If there are exactly 4 ‘S’ countries in the quiz and these are already on the
board, then the only possible country that can share a border with both Chad and
Egypt is LIBYA, so this is in F3.
Clue F4: E4 ends with the same three letters as can be found at the start of D4. (D4
also borders Kazakhstan.) D4 must therefore be RUSSIA and E4 must be BELARUS.
10. The only country which shares a border with both Belarus and Romania is UKRAINE, so
Stage 10 this must be in E3.
Kazakhstan having already been entered, the only way to get from Uzbekistan to
Kyrgyzstan is via TAJIKISTAN, so this must be in B3.
The only country now remaining that can possibly be visited after Kyrgyzstan is CHINA, so
this must be in D3.
11. To get from Uganda to Chad via just 2 countries, you cannot go via Sudan or
South Sudan (see Clue D5), so this can only be achieved by going via DRC and
Stage 11 CAR. Therefore, these must be in E1 and F1 respectively.
Clue B3: The only country which borders Syria and begins with a T is TURKEY,
so this must be in A4.
12. Clue A4: The capital of Turkey is Ankara; the only bordering country which also
has an A capital (Athens) is GREECE, so this is in A3.
Stage 12
Clue A3: Since Macedonia is not in the quiz, the only way to get from Greece to
Kosovo via 2 countries is through ALBANIA and then MONTENEGRO, so these
must be in A2 and B2 respectively.
