MJangale Pitch at the mEducation Alliance, October 2013SenMobile
This document describes a mobile learning solution called mJangale for primary schools in Senegal. The solution aims to improve primary education outcomes by providing mobile phones and educational apps to schools. Each school's kit includes 40 mobile phones for students and 1 for teachers, as well as apps for reading and math based on the Senegalese curriculum. The solution aims to strengthen the relationship between schools and parents by distributing apps to parents as well. An initial pilot with two schools aims to demonstrate the solution's promise before scaling it more broadly.

Enhancing Primary Education with Mobile Phone Applications for Teachers and P...SenMobile
The document discusses a pilot program in Senegal that used mobile phone applications to enhance primary education. It aimed to address problems like lack of individual attention, inclusion of learning styles, and access to resources. The pilot involved one school, its teachers and students. Apps were developed using Java ME, teachers were trained, and apps were introduced into classrooms. An evaluation found reading and writing test scores improved 40-45% after app use. Overall results were positive but more training, content creation, and developing an "ecosystem" were recommended to improve the program.

The document discusses mobile optimization and provides an overview of native mobile applications versus web applications. Native applications are written for specific platforms like iOS or Android and provide richer experiences but require multiple versions. Web applications can target multiple platforms with one codebase but are slower and cannot work offline. The best approach depends on factors like the audience, interactivity needs, and whether offline access is required. Examples provided include a native event guide app that needs offline maps versus a web-based event streaming app requiring constant internet.

Local Mobile Solutions for Learning in Kindergartens in Sub-Saharan AfricaSenMobile
This document proposes local mobile learning solutions for kindergartens in sub-Saharan Africa. It identifies problems with large class sizes, a lack of technology access, and difficulties tracking student progress. The solution involves developing educational apps in local languages for kindergarten topics. A pilot program in Senegal found that students learned independently and collaboratively while teachers saved time and encouraged new learning styles. The proposal calls for a large-scale deployment partnering with governments and schools to provide phones and training while generating data to improve education policies.
Introducing Mobile Learning in Kindergartens in SenegalSenMobile
This document summarizes a project introducing mobile learning apps in kindergartens in Senegal. It describes how a series of apps were developed and piloted in 3 schools, observing that students were able to use the apps independently and were motivated by mobile phones. Teachers found it helped fight digital divide and saved time for assessment. The plan is to work with more schools, sell the apps with online/SMS extensions, and establish phone borrowing with support from manufacturers and operators to scale the project.
This document proposes a price comparison service called Price It that allows consumers to find up-to-date prices of products and services. Price It utilizes micro-workers who submit the latest price information via SMS, apps, or the web. This crowdsourced price data is accessible to users through a web interface and mobile apps, empowering them to make more informed shopping decisions. The service generates revenue through small payments to micro-workers, premium subscriptions and queries from users, and advertising on the SMS and web platforms.
SMS Pharma provides up-to-date information on open health providers and available medications in developing countries by utilizing micro-workers who supply the information via SMS, voice calls, or a mobile app, allowing users to quickly find medical care and medications. The service aims to expand its coverage to additional cities and countries using micro-workers to scale the operation in a sustainable and low-cost manner.
Local micro-workers can provide immediate access to local sport information for global fans by reporting scores and details of local sport events. This allows fans living abroad to stay connected to local teams, and provides a way for others to access sport statistics and results from developing areas that previously lacked reporting infrastructure. The system pays micro-workers small amounts for their submitted data, using their reports of events like games in Senegal's local soccer leagues. It generates revenue from premium access, ads, sponsorships, and selling the collected data and user profiles. The goal is to scale this model to cover more sports, locations, and fans worldwide.
Price It is a price query system that allows users to find up-to-date prices of products and services from micro-workers in developing countries. Micro-workers submit the latest price information via SMS from their feature phones. Users can search for prices through a web or mobile app interface. The system generates revenue from premium SMS/voice services, advertising, and selling aggregated price data.

Microworkers can report scores for local sports, providing fans with immediate access to sports information and sustaining their passion. Amadou, a fan in Senegal, has to wait until the next day's newspaper to get results, as reporting scores requires infrastructure taken for granted elsewhere. The document proposes a solution using microworkers to submit and query sports information via SMS, apps or websites, scaling an existing proof-of-concept to cover more sports and locations.

A Guide to AI for Smarter Nonprofits - Dr. Cori Faklaris, UNC CharlotteCori Faklaris
Working with data is a challenge for many organizations. Nonprofits in particular may need to collect and analyze sensitive, incomplete, and/or biased historical data about people. In this talk, Dr. Cori Faklaris of UNC Charlotte provides an overview of current AI capabilities and weaknesses to consider when integrating current AI technologies into the data workflow. The talk is organized around three takeaways: (1) For better or sometimes worse, AI provides you with “infinite interns.” (2) Give people permission & guardrails to learn what works with these “interns” and what doesn’t. (3) Create a roadmap for adding in more AI to assist nonprofit work, along with strategies for bias mitigation.

This report explores the significance of border towns and spaces for strengthening responses to young people on the move. In particular it explores the linkages of young people to local service centres with the aim of further developing service, protection, and support strategies for migrant children in border areas across the region. The report is based on a small-scale fieldwork study in the border towns of Chipata and Katete in Zambia conducted in July 2023. Border towns and spaces provide a rich source of information about issues related to the informal or irregular movement of young people across borders, including smuggling and trafficking. They can help build a picture of the nature and scope of the type of movement young migrants undertake and also the forms of protection available to them. Border towns and spaces also provide a lens through which we can better understand the vulnerabilities of young people on the move and, critically, the strategies they use to navigate challenges and access support.
The findings in this report highlight some of the key factors shaping the experiences and vulnerabilities of young people on the move – particularly their proximity to border spaces and how this affects the risks that they face. The report describes strategies that young people on the move employ to remain below the radar of visibility to state and non-state actors due to fear of arrest, detention, and deportation while also trying to keep themselves safe and access support in border towns. These strategies of (in)visibility provide a way to protect themselves yet at the same time also heighten some of the risks young people face as their vulnerabilities are not always recognised by those who could offer support.
In this report we show that the realities and challenges of life and migration in this region and in Zambia need to be better understood for support to be strengthened and tuned to meet the specific needs of young people on the move. This includes understanding the role of state and non-state stakeholders, the impact of laws and policies and, critically, the experiences of the young people themselves. We provide recommendations for immediate action, recommendations for programming to support young people on the move in the two towns that would reduce risk for young people in this area, and recommendations for longer term policy advocacy.
