What is your first “music” memory?
“My first music memories (there was not
just one) all involve the role music played in
my family; my mother, grandmother, and
aunt sing in the choir, my uncle is a choir
director, my grandmother and cousin are
exceptional pianists/organists. My first
musical memory was likely my grandmother
playing the piano for me - she definitely was
the one who inspired me most to ask to take
piano lessons. Everything else in my life has
been a natural progression from that point,
and I imagine I might have taken a much
different path had music not been such a
central part of my upbringing.”

Music has played a vital role in Christian
worship since antiquity, and continues to do
so today across many different traditions.
I believe that worship and music are
inseparable, as we are called in the third
chapter of Colossians to “Let the message
of Christ dwell among [us] richly as [we]
teach and admonish one another with all
wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs
from the Spirit, singing to God with
gratitude in [our] hearts.” While it is
certainly true that different components of
liturgical worship speak differently to each
congregant, music during the service can and
should inspire those who sing, play, and hear
it in a deeply meaningful way; music is a
remarkable vessel for text, providing a level
of interpretation and beauty that text alone
does not always reach. It is therefore
incumbent on the musicians in the church
to constantly strive to offer music of the
highest quality, in accordance with the
common goal of glorifying the Creator.
The primary role of music in a worship
service should be to seek to elucidate,
clarify, strengthen, or propel the message
of the readings, liturgy, sacraments, and
sermon. As such, it is imperative that the
music director gives great consideration to
the choosing of hymns and anthems, and for
the instrumentalists in selecting service
music, and how this music is delivered. The
repertoire of Christian liturgical music is
exceptionally robust and constantly growing,
offering a wealth of possibilities for each
day of the liturgical year. It is my belief
that musical choices should constantly
represent the universal nature of the
Christian church, and that the choral and
instrumental repertoires of churches should
include a multiplicity of styles and
genres, including classical liturgical music,
hymns and spirituals, works by contemporary
composers (including new commissions),
and music from other cultures.
The music ministries of a vigorous church
should also offer variety in ensemble
choices. Not only is this important in
showcasing the diversity of musical
experience during the church service, but
also is a way to offer more people from
the congregation (as well as potential
congregants) outlets to explore or expand
their spiritual gifts. A goal of a church
should always be to include as many of its
members in the church’s ministries as
possible, and a music ministry that offers
multiple opportunities aids in fulfilling that
goal. As an educational goal, it is also
important that the church’s ensembles
collaborate often to maximize how it offers
worship experiences to its members and
congregation (children’s choir with adults,
chancel choir with orchestra, etc.).
In terms of its role in the community, a
church fine arts ministry has a significant
capacity to provide education to students of
all ages. Children can learn music and
singing fundamentals from participating in a
children’s music program, and adults can
enjoy the benefits of life-long learning by
serving as an active member in a church
ensemble. A church music program of
considerable size and stature can also act as
a cultural institution within a community,
making musical experiences (e.g., Evensong
services, organ recitals, or Advent lessons
and carols services) available to the public
and inviting people from outside the
congregation into the presence of the
church. If the music program grows in
recognition within the community, this
can certainly draw new members and new
participants in the worshipping of God.

- 2. This year, wehave taken a journey through the themes in the First Press. At the beginning of the year, we were challenged to Discover God around us and within ourselves. This summer, we were challenged to Renew Ourselves in God’s Word. This fall, we are again challenged, but this time, to take what we have Discovered about God and Ourselves, Renewed by our Covenants with God and Ourselves, and now to Engage Others through God. Any time we commit to embark upon a journey, we are consciously choosing growth over remaining stagnant. Those journeys, that choice to Listen and Go, can often be painful as God works to grow us into the servants and children God requires us to be. We, here at FPC, have journeyed within. We have felt joy, elation, sadness, loss. We have endeavored to Discover God’s will for us as individuals, families, committees, and our own congregation. We have looked within to touch our very innermost beings, our protected hearts and souls, as we have discussed our God Sized Dreams and contemplated how to “Quit Hurrying”, “Stop Complaining” and really see the beauty of ourselves and more importantly, ourselves in each other. Our challenge now is to capture, catch, arrest, grab, snag, draw, attract, gain, win, hold, grip, captivate, engross, absorb, occupy, employ, hire, recruit, take on, secure, enroll, appoint, contract, promise, agree, pledge, vow, covenant, commit oneself, undertake, reserve, participate, take part, join, become involved in, go in for, partake, share, play, interconnect, fit together, unite, and connect. Communion is a practice that is meant to be observed over and over throughout the life of a Christian. It is a holy time of worship when we corporately come together as one body to remember and to celebrate what Christ did for us. All who accept Jesus Christ as their Savior are welcome to take Communion. The Sacrament will be served on Sundays, October 2 and December 4. Baptism is a sacrament, and the sacraments represent the free grace of God. There is no charge for having a child baptized. Call the church office (563-326-1691) to arrange the date of baptism and to request the appropriate forms to be mailed to you. Return those completed forms to the church. Attend a baptismal seminar to review the meaning of baptism and to get oriented to the logistics of the celebration of baptism in worship. Thanksgiving Eve Service & Pie Fellowship Wednesday, November 23, 7:00 PM The traditional Thanksgiving Eve Service and Pie Fellowship begins at 7:00 PM on November 23, the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving. The evening is a great time for the church family to recount blessings and give thanks to God. DEC Taizé Services in the Season of Advent Wednesdays, November 30, December 7 & 14, 6:30 PM The meditative prayer service provides the worshiper an opportunity to reflect on Christ’s birth and life and its significance and influence on his or her life, during the season of hope. Join others in this peaceful, candlelight service of song, prayer, and silence. Praise and thank God for the light He sent which provides salvation for each of us. Christmas Eve Services Saturday, December 24, 4:00, 9:00 & 11:00 PM The 4:00 PM, Christmas Pageant and worship service is particularly for families with young children. We will sing traditional carols and experience the wonder of the candle lit service. The Blessing of the Babies recognizes all infants born since last Christmas and little ones who are new to the congregation. At 9:00 PM, Holy Communion will be shared in the hushed quietness of the first Christmas when God “descended the back stairs of Bethlehem” to become one with the human race. The Feast of Light will be celebrated as the darkened Sanctuary is transformed by candlelight to symbolize pilgrims coming to see the Light of the World. At 11:00 PM, a festive service of carols and candlelighting will herald the welcome of Christmas Day. Carol singing will abound! The traditional Service of Darkness and Candlelighting during the singing of “Silent Night” will add a special feeling to the conclusion of this memorable Christmas celebration. 2

Musikgarten Where can youfind babies, toddlers, parents and even some grandparents singing, dancing, playing and laughing together on Sunday mornings? nswer: It’s the best 30 minutes of the week for busy families who enjoy the bonding time together as their littlest ones explore music and movement activities that are perfect for child development. The sacred-based Musikgarten curriculum, God’s Children Sing, uses familiar Bible stories and songs of praise that are particularly suited for young children, along with a select number of folksongs found in other Musikgarten curricula. The music immerses the children in language; evokes movement; stimulates the brain; and fosters physical coordination -- all in a group setting that builds a God-centered, musical community -- a truly holistic experience. We meet for Musikgarten classes from 10:15-10:45 AM and we follow the Sunday School schedule. Guests are always welcome too! While most of our families come regularly throughout the year, we also have those who drop in when they have grandchildren or friends and family visiting for the weekend. We take that as a compliment and want you to know you are welcome to come! The choirs of First Presbyterian Church are re-organizing and all are welcomed to join! Initial rehearsals in September are the best opportunities to JOIN A CHOIR! You may register online by visiting www.fpcdavenport.org/choirs.htm. Sanctuary Choir - The adult Sanctuary Choir rehearses on Thursday evenings at 7:00 PM. The first rehearsal is September 8. Celebration Singers - The Celebration Singers is for older youth, incorporating sixth through twelfth grades. The first rehearsal is Sunday, September 18 from 4:45 to 5:30 PM. Kirkwood Choir - All first through fifth graders will rehearse on Wednesday evenings from 5:45 to 6:30 PM. The first rehearsal is September 21. Fellowship will be from 6:30 to 7:15 PM. In addition to regular worship participation, this group will be preparing exciting anthems to sing in combination with the Celebration Singers throughout the year. Cecelian Carolers - Membership in this ensemble is selected from girls in grades six through twelve who are also participants in the youth choir. Rehearsals are Sunday afternoons from 4:00 to 4:45 PM, with the first rehearsal scheduled for September 18. Cherub Choir - The Sunday School membership of four-year-olds and Kindergartners sing in the Cherub Choir. Rehearsals are Sunday mornings, beginning on September 18 at 10:00 AM. - 7. GO!What do youget when you combine approximately 5,000 Presbyterian teenagers, Purdue University and the hottest week of the summer, some awesome music and a lot of worship? You get Triennium 2016! Twelve youth from FPC headed to Purdue University the week of July 19 along with 35 other teens from our Presbytery in a row of mini vans. The week of Triennium was life-changing for our youth. Eighth-grader James Riedesel, one of the few teenagers who will be able to participate again in Triennium when it rolls around in another three years, admitted he was already packed for the next trip and still wishes he was back there. Abby Saskowski commented Triennium was amazing, and one of the best weeks of her entire summer. “I became a lot closer to my friends,” said Senior Mason Pedersen about his week, “My relationship with God grew considerably and it really opened my eyes. I got a wooden cross there from a Texas delegation and I still wear today every time I read the Bible.” FPC’s Director of Christian Education Tiffany Horvath, who was a small group leader for 50 teenagers at Triennium, said she didn’t know what to expect during the week, ...into the world and make disciples having never had the opportunity to participate in a Triennium before. She concluded that it was one of the most incredible weeks she’s ever had working with youth. The theme for Triennium this year was “GO!” and the daily sermons emphasized this to the thousands of youth attending. All left Triennium excited to make a difference in their own congregations and community—all left eager to “GO!” and make a difference. Each of those from FPC who attended Triennium wants to sincerely thank the congregation for their prayers and financial support. These youth would not have been able to attend this amazing event without the assistance of First Presbyterian Church members, and each of them wants to let everyone know how grateful they are for this opportunity. - 8. Sunday School KickOff! Sunday, September 11, 10:00 AM Sunday School kicks off with our annual Open House on the third floor of the Christian Education Building. Come and see your classroom and meet your teachers. The first day of class is Sunday, September 18. Confirmation Class Orientation Sunday, September 11, 10:00 AM FPC Confirmation Class is ready to begin! Our one year Confirmation program meets weekly during the Sunday School hour. Returning to lead Confirmation this year are teachersAmy and Mike Saskowski, and Diane and Glen Roebuck. In Confirmation, 7th and 8th grade students explore in greater depth the history, biblical study, and important issues facing today's youth to assist them on their faith journey. Students will attend class weekly, take part in worship services, participate in two 'late-in" social and educational events, worship in other churches as a class, and take part in mission events and church life activities. At the conclusion of Confirmation, students will decide if they are ready to become adult members of First Presbyterian Church. Students and parents are asked to join us for orientation on Sunday, September 11 at 10:00 AM. Please support and pray for our students as they embark on this important aspect of their Christian education. All 7th and 8th graders are invited to participate in our Confirmation Class this year to learn what it means to be a Presbyterian as well as how they can better understand God’s word and be a part of God’s work in the world around them. Sunday School Grades We have made some important changes this year in regards to our Sunday School ages, so please take a second to review this information below! Sunday School is from 10:10-10:45 AM. PLEASE NOTE: FPC Sunday School is open to ALL youth, whether church members or visitors or friends! Everyone is welcome to participate. 3 Years Olds: Musikgarten PreK-Kindergarten & Cherub Choir * Must be 4 years old by September 15 1st -2nd Grade 3rd -4th Grade 5th -6th Grade 7th -8th Grade: Confirmation High School (9th -12th Grade) Please register your child for Sunday School as soon as possible so that we can plan for the curriculum supplies for the year. Registration forms are available on-line at fpcdavenport.org or pick up during Sunday worship in the Narthex. * In the past, this group has included 3-year olds but based on the numbers of children we have this year (19 expected for this class!), we are now inviting the 3-year olds to participate in Musikgarten while Sunday School and Cherub Choir will begin at age 4. Sunday Schoolfor grades preschool through high school, is offered every Sunday morning September through May from 10:10-10:45 AM. Youth in Preschool through 5th grade follow our Lectionary Calendar in terms of their weekly lesson, which means typically what they learn is the same Scripture the pastor is preaching on each week. Middle School youth use the curriculum Connect, from Sparkhouse, where their lessons are divided into six-week segments of the Bible, which is intended to last two years to cover all the segments. High School Sunday School works on different curriculums each year, and are currently using QuickBooks to go over the Book of Acts in the New Testament. November 27- ACE in recess, enjoy Thanksgiving weekend December Advent Series - We will look at three biblical sto- ries in which the principles must prepare and wait, presented by Mark Jones. December 4 – Advent Series This first week, after a brief history of Advent, we will share the story of Zechariah and Elizabeth as told by Luke. We will look particularly at Zechariah’s prophecy. December 11 – Advent Series We are familiar with the angels visiting Joseph and Mary and later, the journey to Bethlehem and birth of Jesus. This week we will look at these stories but also wonder about their time of waiting and preparation between the annunciation and the birth of Jesus. We will also discuss Mary’s Song of Praise. December 18 – Advent Series After Jesus’ birth, Mary and Joseph, following Jewish law, present him at the temple. There they encounter Simeon and the prophetess Anna. Simeon and Anna also had been waiting and preparing for this encounter. What do their stories add to our understanding of Advent and the Christmas story? - 11. TUESDAY MORNING VIDEOSERIES - 10:30 AM The Great Works of Sacred Music is a video lecture course that spans more than a thousand years of music history. Its scope includes the development from early chants to later polyphony; innovations made to satisfy noble and ecclesiastical patrons; the expansion of works beyond those for ritual devotion to those for public exhibition at concerts; and the changes wrought as society became more secular in the 19th century. The lecturer is Dr. Charles McGuire, Professor of Musicology at Oberlin College Conservatory of Music. Part 1 of the course will be offered at 10:30 AM Tuesdays from October 4 through November 22 in the Parlor. There will be one video lecture per session with time for discussion following. We have a gifted spiritual leader and a gifted staff, including a new music director in Matt Bishop; we have a beautiful, historically-significant church home, no debt, and a balanced budget; we have a church family with God-sized dreams; and we’re beginning the sometimes long search for an associate pastor. With these and other ambitious plans, we project approximately $1 million in general income and expenses for 2017, which corresponds to a 10 percent or greater increase in pledges from all who pledge. And, for the first time, we will ask those who have not pledged previously to consider that all who call FPC their church home should pledge at least $25 a month. Soon, you will start seeing Stewardship Stories (short videos) like the one above from members talking about why they turn to FPC in times of joy and sorrow and why they feel that here they truly belong to the body of Christ. As you see these Stewardship Stories, please think about your own, then prayerfully consider pledging 10 percent or more in 2017 than in 2016. If you can do more, please do so; and if you want to start early, please do so. Grandfathered???? Bwahhahahah) have extremely serious and thought provoking gatherings once a month (ummmm…yeah. We’re going to go with that…). Some events are adults-only, and free childcare is offered in the church nursery during these times. Other events are family-friendly and everyone is invited! Travel Fellowship follows the Iowa Wine Trail Saturday, November 5 The Travel Fellowship of Congregational Development and Fellowship (CDF) Committee invites you to explore the Iowa Wine Trail on Saturday, November 5. Departing the church at 9:00 AM on a comfortable mini-coach, members and friends of First Presbyterian will explore the scenic Upper Mississippi River Valley Viticulture Area in eastern Iowa. Enjoy First Presbyterian fellowship while you meet the vintners, celebrate this year’s wines with special wine-food pairings, learn about wine grapes and wine making, enjoy wine tasting, observe winery operations and enjoy fall colors in the vineyards. The group will make four to five stops at small wineries while traversing Iowa’s scenic byways and small town charm on a full-day outing. Caring for Selfand Others Women’s Retreat: Engage with one Another, with God, with the World Saturday, September 24, 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM ALL women of the church are invited to a time of fellowship, laughter, and an opportunity to grow closer to God and to each other at our Women’s Retreat on September 24 at FPC. Childcare will be provided at the church nursery. This one-day event goes from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM and includes breakfast and lunch. Our guest speaker is the Rev. Sarah Hegar from the Presbytery of East Iowa, and we will participate in a small mission project, group bonding activities and more. We truly hope all the women of the congregation can join us. The six-mile walk winds through Davenport and Rock Island. Of the money raised, 25 percent stays here in the Quad Cities to benefit local hunger ministries and the rest goes to Church World Service to combat hunger and help with disaster relief around the world.
