flight movement
to become easy
Kashiram Choudhary
Jaipur: The airport ad-
ministration has com-
pleted the construction
of a taxi track parallel
to the runway at the
Jaipur airport. The
taxi track is from Run-
way 9 to Runway 27.
The advantage of the
track would be that
take-off and landing of
planes will be possible
simultaneously. The
duration of occupation
of the runway will be
reduced.
At present, the length
of the runway at Jaipur
airport is more than 3400
metres. The taxi track
has a maximum length
of 2280 metres. Now
movement of 22 aircraft
will be possible against
15 aircraft in an hour.
Taxi track will con-
nect the runway with
the aircraft parking
and terminal building.
Handling of even the
largest passenger air-
craft like Airbus 380
will be possible.

into the action taken on
Pak refugees in Jais-

which is wrong.
Rathore said that the
Congress in its mani-

forming a separate body
for the refugees. But in-
stead of fulfilling those
promises, the Congress
government is working

YOU READ PART 39 ON MAY 12, 2023
MODI’S MANTRA OF ‘PLAN IN
ADVANCE, PLAN IN DETAIL’
was Regional Or-
ganization Minis-
ter for the entire
northeast region
with the head-
quarters at Guwahati. I was
looking after the civil
northeastern states. As you
know, northeast has a very
different kind of a topogra-
phy from the rest of the
country and that is why we
had no choice but to use the
helicopter to travel places
while we were campaign-
ing. Whenever any nation-
al-level leader or CM visited
the region, I would carry
the map of northeast with
me. I used to share the de-
tails of where we were go-
ing, the direction and the
cuts we were taking with
the visitors.
However, my experience
with PM Modi was very dif-
ferent as compared to other
leaders. Each time when I
would take my map out in
order to explain where and
in which direction we were
headed, Modiji would take
out his map from his file.
This used to be a detailed
map of the region and along
side in another page, there
would be a long list of plac-
es with distances and direc-
tions very clearly laid out.
This second page would
show us if we turned to the
right and traveled, say 30
kms, we would reach this
zila. In case of an emergen-
cy, if our helicopter had to
land, then the page would
have all the information of
the entire local area with
complete details. His file
contained every single bit
of information.
Also, whenever Naren-
dra Modiji was scheduled to
visit the 7 states for an elec-
tion campaign, we used to
receive a request from his
office to send manifestos of
regional parties for at least
the previous 3-4 terms. Not
just this, we would also be
required to send present
manifestos, a list of current
issues in the assembly, per-
sonal profiles of our candi-
dates and also those of the
opposition party who were
standing for elections in the
area, and many other such
details. Thus to say, his
planning is not just meticu-
lous, but is done well in ad-
vance. This detailed plan-
ning before taking any ac-
tion defines the quintessen-
tial Modiji.

the responsi-

Sangathan Ma-
hamantri of Gujarat, at
that time the BJP district
office was close to the jail,
adjacent to the Junagarh
court. Once Narendra bhai
and some of the zila kar-
yakartas had to hold a
meeting and they decided
to meet at the party office.
It was me who ferried Nar-
endra bhai on my scooter
to the BJP office. Since it
was slightly on the out-
skirts of the city
, it was not
possible for party workers
to go there every day
.
When we reached there,
I could see disappointment
written all over Narendra
bhai’s face. He was unhap-
py to see the dirt all over in
the house. He turned to me
and asked, “Where’s the
broom?” Well, I tried to ex-
plain to him and dissuade
him from doing this, but he
just asked me one question
“Tell me where’s the
broom?” I then said to him
“I request you to please
stand on one side of the
room, I will do the broom-
ing.” So today when we wit-
ness the Swachh Bharat
Mission and its success,
people like me go back in
time and recollect inci-
dents from years ago when
Modiji showed to us how
important cleanliness is to
him. This is one of the big-
gest lessons I have learned
from him and I remember
his penchant for Swachhta

tions are there in this area?
I want you to focus on build-
ing friendly relations be-
tween the public and police.
When these educational
institutions take their stu-
dents on tours, do they in-
form you?” I said “No, sir! I
receive no information.” He
then gave me an eye-open-
ing suggestion. He said
“You must go and approach
them and take details from
them about the tours being
organized, especially the
age of the children. And
then tell them, since young
children will be embarking
on the tours, we will have
two of our policemen ac-
company them for their se-
curity
.” When I asked sir to
elaborate on this sugges-
tion, he said “The public
and young kids are scared
of the police. If there are 50
kids in a bus and two buses
with 100 children are on a
trip, then they will develop
a deep bond with the two
policemen who are accom-
panying them. The fear of
policemen will vanish from
the hearts of children. And
the policemen, they will
feel as if they are part of a
family and they will cher-
ish the bond that they de-
velop with these children.”
Sir gave us many more sug-
gestions like this one that
helped us create a more lov-

New Delhi (PTI):
Kiren Rijiju’s exit from
the coveted Law Minis-

his frequent criticism
of the judiciary, par-

of appointment of judg-

the Supreme Court.
Kiren Rijiju, a three-
term Lok Sabha mem-

slammed the collegium
system of appoint-
ments to the higher ju-

Constitution and even
accused a few retired
judges of being part of

remarks that evoked
strong reactions.
The 51-year-old Rijiju

Minister of State for
Minority Affairs and
Minister of State (Inde-

displeasure over the Su-

making public Intelli-

2NDFRONT
POSTAL REG NO. JPC/004/2022-24
z Three days passed
and then the Chief
Minister of Karnata-
ka was selected. How
do you visualise this
entire episode?
Dr Jagdeesh Chandra:
The entire chain of
events is under normal
process. When ever CM
is selected in any State,
except under BJP rule,
where a chit is pulled
out and the name is an-
nounced without delay,
it takes time. And now
the CM name has been
announced and Siddar-
amaiah will be CM.
They have taken time to
solve the issue sur-
rounding DK Shivaku-
mar, but still the good
part is that the names
have been decided upon
in a reasonable time.
z What, according to
you, will be the chal-
lenges before the new
Chief Minister? Do
you think that even
after all the under-
standings and deals,
will this government
function for five
years?
See, this is an impor-
tant question as to what
are the challenges. The
biggest challenge be-
fore the new Chief Min-
ister is Gandhi family,
where there are three
‘Power Centres,’ and to
strike a balance be-
tween the three and to
work with them, to
keep himself equidis-
tant from all the Gan-
dhis and to fit himself
in the internal politics
of 10, Janpath while
keeping in mind the DK
factor. The second chal-
lenge is the ‘power
sharing formula’ with
DK Shivakumar. It is
being said that about a
dozen men would be
sworn in as ministers
and of these, three
would be Siddaramai-
ah’s and remaining
would be DK’s of
which, one would be
Parmeshwaran and
even Congress Chief
Kharge’s son can be
sworn-in, it is being
said. So overall, this
‘power sharing formu-
la’ is a challenge in it-
self. And even if this is
decided, then the issue
of total ministers in the
Cabinet would arise.
Then there would be
the issue of distribu-
tion of departments.
Then there will be the
issue of transfer list of
IAS, IPS, the State bu-
reaucracy
. That is a ma-
jor issue, which seems
small, but is actually an
extremely sensitive is-
sue. Then the issue of
appointment of indi-
viduals to Corpora-
tions, Boards etc. And
on top of that, the big-
gest challenge is that to
fulfil the guarantees
and promises made by
Congress like OPS etc,
the State needs a budg-
et of Rs 62,000 crore,
and where will this
money come from?
These are the basic
challenges. Secondly,
you asked if this gov-
ernment will be able to
complete a full-term.
That in itself is the
prime challenge and
the biggest challenge,
because it is seldom
that someone com-
pletes five year term in
Karnataka. Siddara-
maiah completed one
term of five years, but
after that, who ever
comes, like Yediyurap-
pa had to go within six
days, then Kumaraswa-
my came and he went in
about thirteen months’
time and when Yedi-
yurappa returned, he
had to drop out after
two years. So, this ‘up
and down’ keeps hap-
pening in Karnataka
politics and political
instability is a common
feature. So, we will have
to wait and see how the
‘power sharing formu-
la’ plays up and what
happening in two and a
half years from now.
z What was the rea-
son for this unfath-
omable loss of BJP in
Karnataka?
It is all part of luck and
destiny
. Reasons can be
only for namesake and I
can list a few. First rea-
son was the ‘anti-estab-
lishment’ factor. Then
second is the ‘percep-
tion on corruption’ that
kind of created a wave.
Pay CM or the 40 per-
cent commission type
of lingo resonated with
people. Corruption is
nothing new. Manmo-
han Singh government
went out of power due
to this and over the past
eight years, corruption
is hardly an issue. Rath-
er ‘Hindutva’ ‘Nation-
alism’ is an issue, but in
Karnataka, it became
an issue with slogans
like pay CM and 40 per-
cent. A narrative was
spun around it and
there were columns in
papers and complaints
were also made in the
Election Commission
but till then, a lot of
time had passed and the
contractor, who had
claimed that 40 % were
demanded from him, he
committed suicide and
thus, he couldn’t reveal
what the truth and false
of the case were. The
State govt removed the
minister, who allegedly
demanded the 40 per-
cent commission and
that Minister was not
given the ticket because
it had caused a major
damage. So, overall an
atmosphere had been
created in Karnataka
on corruption. Thirdly,
‘Yediyurappa factor’ as
it appears that he could
not come out openly in
support and fourthly,
the ‘ticket distribution’
was also faulted. See
there are groups every-
where and the internal
strife, even though the
High Command tried to
handle that, but the in-
ternal strife was too
much. Then, several
leaders left the party,
which generally does
not happen in BJP
. They
tried to pacify the dis-
gruntled lot, which too
generally does not hap-
pen in BJP, and the dis-
gruntled lot did not pay
heed. So, overall, it was
a conspiracy of circum-
stances due to which
BJP had to face such a
loss wherein, no factor
worked, which is sur-
prising. This result can
not be analysed scien-
tifically, because it be-
trays all logic. It is a
game played by destiny
.
z Do you think Gov-
ernment of India’s
feedback system had
gone ‘One-way’?
I personally believe that
Narendra Modi’s sys-
tem, the feedback sys-
tem in PMO, or in IB or
in Ministries is ‘fool-
proof,’ broadly
. PM nev-
er stays in the dark as
he gets exact feedback.
And at many times, he
has retracted his steps
too keeping in mind,
the public sentiment,
for example, what hap-
pened in the farmers’
agitation. But we don’t
know what happened
this time around as it
seems the system has
collapsed. Either they
knew that they were go-
ing to lose, but it seems
that somewhere the sys-
tem has failed and I feel
that somewhere Naren-
dra Modi must be feel-
ing wronged. He has
such a major system
and perhaps he was al-
ways told in the feed-
back that BJP is win-
ning. Although it does
not matter what feed-
back is being given but
while forming an over-
all strategy, it plays a
role. This time, for the
first time, it felt like the
feedback system of gov-
ernment of India or the
Prime Minister has not
been that effective, or
that they could not
touch the nerve of the
people or could not ob-
serve the ground reali-
ties. So, it can be said
that this was a failure
of intelligence system
and due to this, it was a
‘Yes man briefing.’ So
perhaps one needs to
take a call on the people,
who report to PM or the
agencies that report to
government, they will
have to be vigilant and
give the Prime Minister
the authentic details
and facts so that a deba-
cle doesn’t happen on
the policy level.
z How did Congress
manage to reach the
majority figure of
135 after 40 years?
What were the rea-
sons by which Con-
gress won such a ma-
jor victory?
See, like I said earlier,
the reasons for their
(BJP) loss, became the
reason for Congress’
victory. The biggest
thing is destiny. Con-
gress’ revival had to
happen from Karnata-
ka, in a way, so that hap-
pened. Apart from the
negative points of the
BJP, like the anti-estab-
lishments feeling, the
corruption charges, the
failure of input system
etc, the biggest factor
was that the two groups
in Congress stood unit-
ed, which actually hap-
pens with great diffi-
culty in states. And they
contested the elections
as one unit and when
Rahul Gandhi had car-
ried out his ‘Bharat
Jodo Yatra’ from that
state and his interac-
tions with these lead-
ers, became a differ-
ence. So, these leaders
did not fight among
themselves publicly,
even though they may
have differences. Sec-
ondly, the guarantees
and the populist prom-
ises that have been
made. Everyone makes
promises but from
where will you get those
62,000 crore rupees?
The way of these prom-
ises was shown by
Ashok Gehlot through
OPS, which played a
role in Himachal too.
Then they gave assur-
ances like free electric-
ity, and pension to the
female head of the fam-
ily or free travel or
cheap gas cylinder or
interest free loan to
fishermen, or increas-
ing the reservation
limit. So overall, a
package was made of
freebies. And what is
more important is the
fact that ‘Muslim po-
larisation’ of votes
happened for the first
time. So, there is no
perfect reason for fail-
ure, but if we jot down,
then these appear to be
some of the reasons.
z Why couldn’t JDS
become a ‘Kingmak-
er’ in these elections?
And will there be a
two-party system in
Karnataka now?
People did not give it
the chance of playing
that role. Although pri-
or to the elections and
after the exit polls, they
kept on saying that we
will be the ‘Kingmak-
ers.’ They had complete
faith and people did not
give them that chance
thus, they didn’t be-
come ‘Kingmakers. Re-
garding the two-party
system, well you can
say so, since the smaller
parties and even JDS
has been cleared out
now. Now, there is a
two-party system in
Karnataka i.e. BJP and
Congress and in fact,
several think tanks and
politicians and the peo-
ple in power too believe
that there should be two
party in polity since re-
gional parties play the
game of ‘spoilers.’ It
may therefore, be the
beginning of two party
system in Karnataka.
z So will Congress in-
clude JDS in its gov-
ernment now also?
They are self- sufficient,
they have clear majori-
ty, but sometimes in
politics, there is cama-
raderie, like how Nar-
endra Modi shows
brotherhood in Govern-
ment of India, where
even though they had
303 seats, but Modi
asked all the parties to
move along. Perhaps
they may have had such
a thought. Thus, it
could be so that going
ahead, Congress shows
large-heartedness and
takes them along. And
if it does not, then in
2024, BJP may ask them.
z About 73 percent vot-
ing was conducted in
Karnataka this time.
What are its implica-
tions? Also, how right
were the exit polls?
See, this result means
that the people want to
give a decisive mandate,
whosoever it gives that
mandate to. So the day,
we found that 73 per-
cent votes have been
cast, I realised it was a
decisive mandate. And
going by the way Naren-
dra Modi carried out
his rally on the last day
and the huge turnout of
people, it seemed that
the election would be
‘One way
.’ But although
that huge voter turnout
was for Congress, but
its implication is that
people want to give de-
cisive mandate. Second-
ly
, exit polls have turned
to be correct in the case
of Karnataka. In 2018,
eight exit polls were
conducted of which,
seven turned out to be
correct. This time
around, seven major
exit polls were conduct-
ed of which, five said
that Congress will lead.
India Today had said
that Congress will form
government. So this
time around, you can
say that the credibility
of exit polls have been
restored in Karnataka.

astroesophageal re-
flux disease (GERD),
commonly known as
acid reflux, is a condi-
tion where the stom-
ach's acid and diges-
tive enzymes flow
back into the oesophagus,
causing irritation and inflam-
mation. GERD is a common
condition affecting millions of
people worldwide, and if left
untreated, it can lead to seri-
ous health complications.
SYMPTOMS OF
GASTROESOPHAGEAL
REFLUX DISEASE
Symptoms of GERD include
heartburn, regurgitation of
food or sour liquid, difficulty
swallowing, chest pain, and a
chronic cough. These symp-
toms can be mild or severe and
can occur intermittently or
regularly, depending on the
severity of the condition.
If left untreated, GERD can
lead to serious health compli-
cations such as oesophagal
stricture, Barrett's oesopha-
gus, and oesophagal cancer.
Oesophagal stricture is a nar-
rowing of the oesophagus
caused by scar tissue from acid
reflux, which can make it dif-
ficult to swallow and can cause
food to get stuck in the oesoph-
agus. Barrett's oesophagus is a
condition where the cells lin-
ing the oesophagus change,
which can increase the risk of
developing oesophagal cancer.
TREATMENT OF
GASTROESOPHAGEAL
REFLUX DISEASE
Treatment for GERD includes
lifestyle changes such as
weight loss, avoiding certain
foods and drinks, and elevat-
ing the head of the bed. Med-
ications such as proton pump
inhibitors (PPIs), histamine-2
blockers, and antacids can
also be used to reduce the
amount of acid in the stom-
ach.
In severe cases, surgery
may be required to strengthen
the LES and prevent acid
reflux. The most common sur-
gical procedure for GERD is
fundoplication, where the up-
per part of the stomach is
wrapped around the LES to
create a new valve and prevent
acid reflux. Five Best Ways to
Reduce Gastroesophageal Re-
flux Disease Symptoms
Adhering to specific diet
and lifestyle guidelines can
reduce more than one-third of
the incidence of gastroesoph-
ageal reflux disease symp-
toms in women.
In conclusion, GERD is a
common condition that can
lead to serious health compli-
cations if left untreated. If
you experience symptoms of
acid reflux, it is important to
seek medical attention and
get a proper diagnosis and
treatment plan to pre-
vent long-term dam-
age to the oesopha-
gus. With proper
treatment, most
people with
GERD can
m a n a g e
their symp-
toms and
prevent se-
rious health
complications.

HIGHLIGHTS
n GERD, or acid reflux disease, occurs when stomach acid flows back into
the oesophagus, causing irritation and discomfort
n If left untreated, GERD can lead to more severe health problems such as
Barrett's esophagus, oesophagal cancer, and respiratory issues
n Lifestyle changes, medication, and surgery are some of the treatment
options available for managing GERD and preventing long-term complications
CAUSES OF
GASTROESOPHAGEAL
REFLUX DISEASE
GERD is caused by the
weakening of the lower oe-
sophagal sphincter (LES), a
muscular ring that acts as a
valve between the stomach
and the oesophagus. When
the LES is weakened or
relaxed, it allows stomach
acid to flow back into the
oesophagus, causing irrita-
tion and inflammation.

  • 4. UNTOLD STORIES OF PM MODI - PART 40 ‘MODI HAI TO MUMKIN HAI…’ NaMo: INSTINCTIVE, HUMANE,PUNCTILIOUS Cops on school tour! Modi’s idea for better police- public relations YOU READ PART 39 ON MAY 12, 2023 MODI’S MANTRA OF ‘PLAN IN ADVANCE, PLAN IN DETAIL’ was Regional Or- ganization Minis- ter for the entire northeast region with the head- quarters at Guwahati. I was looking after the civil northeastern states. As you know, northeast has a very different kind of a topogra- phy from the rest of the country and that is why we had no choice but to use the helicopter to travel places while we were campaign- ing. Whenever any nation- al-level leader or CM visited the region, I would carry the map of northeast with me. I used to share the de- tails of where we were go- ing, the direction and the cuts we were taking with the visitors. However, my experience with PM Modi was very dif- ferent as compared to other leaders. Each time when I would take my map out in order to explain where and in which direction we were headed, Modiji would take out his map from his file. This used to be a detailed map of the region and along side in another page, there would be a long list of plac- es with distances and direc- tions very clearly laid out. This second page would show us if we turned to the right and traveled, say 30 kms, we would reach this zila. In case of an emergen- cy, if our helicopter had to land, then the page would have all the information of the entire local area with complete details. His file contained every single bit of information. Also, whenever Naren- dra Modiji was scheduled to visit the 7 states for an elec- tion campaign, we used to receive a request from his office to send manifestos of regional parties for at least the previous 3-4 terms. Not just this, we would also be required to send present manifestos, a list of current issues in the assembly, per- sonal profiles of our candi- dates and also those of the opposition party who were standing for elections in the area, and many other such details. Thus to say, his planning is not just meticu- lous, but is done well in ad- vance. This detailed plan- ning before taking any ac- tion defines the quintessen- tial Modiji. TO BE CONTINUED... I No compromise on Safai, Modi’s Cleanliness Drive hen Narendra bhai took over the responsi- bilities of the Sangathan Ma- hamantri of Gujarat, at that time the BJP district office was close to the jail, adjacent to the Junagarh court. Once Narendra bhai and some of the zila kar- yakartas had to hold a meeting and they decided to meet at the party office. It was me who ferried Nar- endra bhai on my scooter to the BJP office. Since it was slightly on the out- skirts of the city , it was not possible for party workers to go there every day . When we reached there, I could see disappointment written all over Narendra bhai’s face. He was unhap- py to see the dirt all over in the house. He turned to me and asked, “Where’s the broom?” Well, I tried to ex- plain to him and dissuade him from doing this, but he just asked me one question “Tell me where’s the broom?” I then said to him “I request you to please stand on one side of the room, I will do the broom- ing.” So today when we wit- ness the Swachh Bharat Mission and its success, people like me go back in time and recollect inci- dents from years ago when Modiji showed to us how important cleanliness is to him. This is one of the big- gest lessons I have learned from him and I remember his penchant for Swachhta from his earlier days. W COMPILED AND EDITED BY SHASHIKANT SHARMA AND SHWETA SHARMA arendra Modiji asked me “How many villages comeunderyou?” I replied “Sir, 70 villages.” He asked me fur- ther “So, how many schools and educational institu- tions are there in this area? I want you to focus on build- ing friendly relations be- tween the public and police. When these educational institutions take their stu- dents on tours, do they in- form you?” I said “No, sir! I receive no information.” He then gave me an eye-open- ing suggestion. He said “You must go and approach them and take details from them about the tours being organized, especially the age of the children. And then tell them, since young children will be embarking on the tours, we will have two of our policemen ac- company them for their se- curity .” When I asked sir to elaborate on this sugges- tion, he said “The public and young kids are scared of the police. If there are 50 kids in a bus and two buses with 100 children are on a trip, then they will develop a deep bond with the two policemen who are accom- panying them. The fear of policemen will vanish from the hearts of children. And the policemen, they will feel as if they are part of a family and they will cher- ish the bond that they de- velop with these children.” Sir gave us many more sug- gestions like this one that helped us create a more lov- ing, happy, secure and a united society . • 9. An occasional backward glance, reposes and refreshes us for the journey ahead and moving on. —Dr Jagdeesh Chandra, CEO Editor-in-Chief, First India JAIPUR | FRIDAY, MAY 19, 2023 www.firstindia.co.in I https://firstindia.co.in/epapers/jaipur I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia 08 2NDFRONT POSTAL REG NO. JPC/004/2022-24 z Three days passed and then the Chief Minister of Karnata- ka was selected. How do you visualise this entire episode? Dr Jagdeesh Chandra: The entire chain of events is under normal process. When ever CM is selected in any State, except under BJP rule, where a chit is pulled out and the name is an- nounced without delay, it takes time. And now the CM name has been announced and Siddar- amaiah will be CM. They have taken time to solve the issue sur- rounding DK Shivaku- mar, but still the good part is that the names have been decided upon in a reasonable time. z What, according to you, will be the chal- lenges before the new Chief Minister? Do you think that even after all the under- standings and deals, will this government function for five years? See, this is an impor- tant question as to what are the challenges. The biggest challenge be- fore the new Chief Min- ister is Gandhi family, where there are three ‘Power Centres,’ and to strike a balance be- tween the three and to work with them, to keep himself equidis- tant from all the Gan- dhis and to fit himself in the internal politics of 10, Janpath while keeping in mind the DK factor. The second chal- lenge is the ‘power sharing formula’ with DK Shivakumar. It is being said that about a dozen men would be sworn in as ministers and of these, three would be Siddaramai- ah’s and remaining would be DK’s of which, one would be Parmeshwaran and even Congress Chief Kharge’s son can be sworn-in, it is being said. So overall, this ‘power sharing formu- la’ is a challenge in it- self. And even if this is decided, then the issue of total ministers in the Cabinet would arise. Then there would be the issue of distribu- tion of departments. Then there will be the issue of transfer list of IAS, IPS, the State bu- reaucracy . That is a ma- jor issue, which seems small, but is actually an extremely sensitive is- sue. Then the issue of appointment of indi- viduals to Corpora- tions, Boards etc. And on top of that, the big- gest challenge is that to fulfil the guarantees and promises made by Congress like OPS etc, the State needs a budg- et of Rs 62,000 crore, and where will this money come from? These are the basic challenges. Secondly, you asked if this gov- ernment will be able to complete a full-term. That in itself is the prime challenge and the biggest challenge, because it is seldom that someone com- pletes five year term in Karnataka. Siddara- maiah completed one term of five years, but after that, who ever comes, like Yediyurap- pa had to go within six days, then Kumaraswa- my came and he went in about thirteen months’ time and when Yedi- yurappa returned, he had to drop out after two years. So, this ‘up and down’ keeps hap- pening in Karnataka politics and political instability is a common feature. So, we will have to wait and see how the ‘power sharing formu- la’ plays up and what happening in two and a half years from now. z What was the rea- son for this unfath- omable loss of BJP in Karnataka? It is all part of luck and destiny . Reasons can be only for namesake and I can list a few. First rea- son was the ‘anti-estab- lishment’ factor. Then second is the ‘percep- tion on corruption’ that kind of created a wave. Pay CM or the 40 per- cent commission type of lingo resonated with people. Corruption is nothing new. Manmo- han Singh government went out of power due to this and over the past eight years, corruption is hardly an issue. Rath- er ‘Hindutva’ ‘Nation- alism’ is an issue, but in Karnataka, it became an issue with slogans like pay CM and 40 per- cent. A narrative was spun around it and there were columns in papers and complaints were also made in the Election Commission but till then, a lot of time had passed and the contractor, who had claimed that 40 % were demanded from him, he committed suicide and thus, he couldn’t reveal what the truth and false of the case were. The State govt removed the minister, who allegedly demanded the 40 per- cent commission and that Minister was not given the ticket because it had caused a major damage. So, overall an atmosphere had been created in Karnataka on corruption. Thirdly, ‘Yediyurappa factor’ as it appears that he could not come out openly in support and fourthly, the ‘ticket distribution’ was also faulted. See there are groups every- where and the internal strife, even though the High Command tried to handle that, but the in- ternal strife was too much. Then, several leaders left the party, which generally does not happen in BJP . They tried to pacify the dis- gruntled lot, which too generally does not hap- pen in BJP, and the dis- gruntled lot did not pay heed. So, overall, it was a conspiracy of circum- stances due to which BJP had to face such a loss wherein, no factor worked, which is sur- prising. This result can not be analysed scien- tifically, because it be- trays all logic. It is a game played by destiny . z Do you think Gov- ernment of India’s feedback system had gone ‘One-way’? I personally believe that Narendra Modi’s sys- tem, the feedback sys- tem in PMO, or in IB or in Ministries is ‘fool- proof,’ broadly . PM nev- er stays in the dark as he gets exact feedback. And at many times, he has retracted his steps too keeping in mind, the public sentiment, for example, what hap- pened in the farmers’ agitation. But we don’t know what happened this time around as it seems the system has collapsed. Either they knew that they were go- ing to lose, but it seems that somewhere the sys- tem has failed and I feel that somewhere Naren- dra Modi must be feel- ing wronged. He has such a major system and perhaps he was al- ways told in the feed- back that BJP is win- ning. Although it does not matter what feed- back is being given but while forming an over- all strategy, it plays a role. This time, for the first time, it felt like the feedback system of gov- ernment of India or the Prime Minister has not been that effective, or that they could not touch the nerve of the people or could not ob- serve the ground reali- ties. So, it can be said that this was a failure of intelligence system and due to this, it was a ‘Yes man briefing.’ So perhaps one needs to take a call on the people, who report to PM or the agencies that report to government, they will have to be vigilant and give the Prime Minister the authentic details and facts so that a deba- cle doesn’t happen on the policy level. z How did Congress manage to reach the majority figure of 135 after 40 years? What were the rea- sons by which Con- gress won such a ma- jor victory? See, like I said earlier, the reasons for their (BJP) loss, became the reason for Congress’ victory. The biggest thing is destiny. Con- gress’ revival had to happen from Karnata- ka, in a way, so that hap- pened. Apart from the negative points of the BJP, like the anti-estab- lishments feeling, the corruption charges, the failure of input system etc, the biggest factor was that the two groups in Congress stood unit- ed, which actually hap- pens with great diffi- culty in states. And they contested the elections as one unit and when Rahul Gandhi had car- ried out his ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ from that state and his interac- tions with these lead- ers, became a differ- ence. So, these leaders did not fight among themselves publicly, even though they may have differences. Sec- ondly, the guarantees and the populist prom- ises that have been made. Everyone makes promises but from where will you get those 62,000 crore rupees? The way of these prom- ises was shown by Ashok Gehlot through OPS, which played a role in Himachal too. Then they gave assur- ances like free electric- ity, and pension to the female head of the fam- ily or free travel or cheap gas cylinder or interest free loan to fishermen, or increas- ing the reservation limit. So overall, a package was made of freebies. And what is more important is the fact that ‘Muslim po- larisation’ of votes happened for the first time. So, there is no perfect reason for fail- ure, but if we jot down, then these appear to be some of the reasons. z Why couldn’t JDS become a ‘Kingmak- er’ in these elections? And will there be a two-party system in Karnataka now? People did not give it the chance of playing that role. Although pri- or to the elections and after the exit polls, they kept on saying that we will be the ‘Kingmak- ers.’ They had complete faith and people did not give them that chance thus, they didn’t be- come ‘Kingmakers. Re- garding the two-party system, well you can say so, since the smaller parties and even JDS has been cleared out now. Now, there is a two-party system in Karnataka i.e. BJP and Congress and in fact, several think tanks and politicians and the peo- ple in power too believe that there should be two party in polity since re- gional parties play the game of ‘spoilers.’ It may therefore, be the beginning of two party system in Karnataka. z So will Congress in- clude JDS in its gov- ernment now also? They are self- sufficient, they have clear majori- ty, but sometimes in politics, there is cama- raderie, like how Nar- endra Modi shows brotherhood in Govern- ment of India, where even though they had 303 seats, but Modi asked all the parties to move along. Perhaps they may have had such a thought. Thus, it could be so that going ahead, Congress shows large-heartedness and takes them along. And if it does not, then in 2024, BJP may ask them. z About 73 percent vot- ing was conducted in Karnataka this time. What are its implica- tions? Also, how right were the exit polls? See, this result means that the people want to give a decisive mandate, whosoever it gives that mandate to. So the day, we found that 73 per- cent votes have been cast, I realised it was a decisive mandate. And going by the way Naren- dra Modi carried out his rally on the last day and the huge turnout of people, it seemed that the election would be ‘One way .’ But although that huge voter turnout was for Congress, but its implication is that people want to give de- cisive mandate. Second- ly , exit polls have turned to be correct in the case of Karnataka. In 2018, eight exit polls were conducted of which, seven turned out to be correct. This time around, seven major exit polls were conduct- ed of which, five said that Congress will lead. India Today had said that Congress will form government. So this time around, you can say that the credibility of exit polls have been restored in Karnataka. YOUR DAY Horoscope by Saurabbh Sachdeva astroesophageal re- flux disease (GERD), commonly known as acid reflux, is a condi- tion where the stom- ach's acid and diges- tive enzymes flow back into the oesophagus, causing irritation and inflam- mation. GERD is a common condition affecting millions of people worldwide, and if left untreated, it can lead to seri- ous health complications. SYMPTOMS OF GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE Symptoms of GERD include heartburn, regurgitation of food or sour liquid, difficulty swallowing, chest pain, and a chronic cough. These symp- toms can be mild or severe and can occur intermittently or regularly, depending on the severity of the condition. If left untreated, GERD can lead to serious health compli- cations such as oesophagal stricture, Barrett's oesopha- gus, and oesophagal cancer. Oesophagal stricture is a nar- rowing of the oesophagus caused by scar tissue from acid reflux, which can make it dif- ficult to swallow and can cause food to get stuck in the oesoph- agus. Barrett's oesophagus is a condition where the cells lin- ing the oesophagus change, which can increase the risk of developing oesophagal cancer. TREATMENT OF GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE Treatment for GERD includes lifestyle changes such as weight loss, avoiding certain foods and drinks, and elevat- ing the head of the bed. Med- ications such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), histamine-2 blockers, and antacids can also be used to reduce the amount of acid in the stom- ach. In severe cases, surgery may be required to strengthen the LES and prevent acid reflux. The most common sur- gical procedure for GERD is fundoplication, where the up- per part of the stomach is wrapped around the LES to create a new valve and prevent acid reflux. Five Best Ways to Reduce Gastroesophageal Re- flux Disease Symptoms Adhering to specific diet and lifestyle guidelines can reduce more than one-third of the incidence of gastroesoph- ageal reflux disease symp- toms in women. In conclusion, GERD is a common condition that can lead to serious health compli- cations if left untreated. If you experience symptoms of acid reflux, it is important to seek medical attention and get a proper diagnosis and treatment plan to pre- vent long-term dam- age to the oesopha- gus. With proper treatment, most people with GERD can m a n a g e their symp- toms and prevent se- rious health complications.
