Nathdwara: Prime
Minister Narendra
Modi on Wednesday
said some people are so
full of negativity that
they don’t want to see
anything good happen
in the country and only
like to create contro-
versy. At a function in
Nathdwara town of Ra-
jasthan, Modi laid
foundation of `5,500
crore. Earlier, Modi of-
fered prayers at the
Shrinathji temple.
“Because of this
thinking, priority was
not given to infrastruc-

rail line, Karauli-Sar-
mathura rail line and
national project status
to ERCP.
“If sufficient num-
ber of medical colleges
had already been built,
then there would have
been no shortage of
doctors. If every house
would have started get-
ting water earlier, then
JJM would not have to
be started,” PM Modi
said. Full Reports on P8

KARTIKEY DEV SINGH
was a visual that is
seldom seen. Prime
Minister Narendra
Modi alighted from
the Air Force heli-
copter at Nathdwara
on Wednesday and was received
by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot at
the helipad. To the surprise of
those present, it was a ‘coinci-
dence’ that the duo had donned
almost similar clothes, white kur-
ta and off-white Nehru/Modi jack-
et. The individuals, one — a pre-
mier of a Nation and the other — a
premier of a State, met with ex-
treme warm heartedness and com-
passion. While the duo are custo-
dians and proponents of two sepa-
rate political ideologies, which
has long been at the opposite ends
of the spectrum; yet there ap-
peared no love lost between the
two political bigwigs.
Their journey so far has been
almost similar. Both have been in-
fluenced by ideas of service from
an early age, both started giving
their time to the idea in their
teens, both of them struggled for
that idea and through that strug-
gle, rose to the political heights in
their respective parties.
They followed the same line, yet
the relationship between Modi
and Gehlot is an inexplicable puz-
zle! On the one hand, there is a
friendship on a personal level be-
tween the two. When Modi
reached Nathdwara helipad on
Wednesday, Gehlot warmly wel-
comed Modi. Coincidentally, the
dressing sense of both was also
almost identical and after this,
from the stage in Nathdwara,
Modi called Gehlot, his friend. In
fact, in the past, Modi has termed
Gehlot as the senior-most Chief
Minister, while also showering
many accolades on the Congress
leader from time to time.
And this was visible by CM Ge-
hlot’sgestureof receivingPMModi
atNathdwara,anact,notmanyOp-
positionCMsadhereto,andyetCM
Gehlot, displaying a sense of pro-
priety
,wentaheadandreceivedPM
Modi. In turn, the PM too acknowl-
edged Gehlot’ gesture and was all
smiles and visibly happy on seeing
his counterpart!
This ‘respect and honour’ that
both the leaders have for each
other, was visible during Gehlot’s
address at Nathdwara as well. In
fact, the duo even cracked light
jokes among themselves, half a
dozen times, while seated on the
stage. When the CM stood up for
his address, then the slogan of
Modi-Modi echoed among the
common people. In such a situa-
tion, PM Modi himself pacified
the people by pointing from the
stage. Along with this, he also in-
dicated BJP State president CP
Joshi to stop the people from rais-
ing slogans.
But on the other hand, both the
leaders did not hesitate to sur-
round and taunt each other’s par-
ty
. Gehlot took sarcastic jibes from
the stage in front of Modi and said
that ‘whoever may be in the gov-
ernment, but the Opposition
should be respected. We used to
compete with Gujarat in develop-
ment, now Rajasthan is far ahead
of Gujarat’.
Meanwhile, PM Modi too tar-
geted the Congress rule and said
that ‘Some people don’t want to
see good happening in the country
,
they only like to create controver-
sy’. And after this statement of
Modi, Gehlot tweeted his reaction
and said that PM should have
avoided giving political statement
in his (Gehlot’s) presence in the
government program.
Everything said and done, the
‘relationship’ between Modi and
Gehlot is akin to that of mature
individuals where even though
they call out each other before the
public, yet there is a deep admira-
tion between two for each other.

ur controversial neighbour Pa-
kistan came in to being in a
hurry and did not have enough
time to scrutinize the fact that a
strong and imbalanced army is
a threat to the development of
the nation as a democratic set-
up. The failing health of Mr Jin-
nah did not provide him with
sufficient time to raise the re-
quired civil institutions that
could control the army
.
Army in Pakistan is ‘SEC-
OND TO NONE’ in the hierar-
chy of power game and has used
its rivalry with India to validate
its control of total power and to
place itself above all admonish-
ments. Even though it never
wonanyof thefourwarsagainst
India, it managed to wage a suc-
cessful war against its own dem-
ocratic system and ruling Paki-
stan directly for over 30 years
and influencing the corridors of
political power for rest of the
other period since its independ-
ence. Yes, the Generals run the
country from behind the façade
of civilian govt face.
In fact, last three Chiefs of
Army Staff, Generals Kayani,
Gen Raheel and Gen Bajwa all
decided not to be the face to take
direct control of the govern-
ment. As the Army had gained
de facto control over nation’s
nuclear and missile programs
in addition to a direct say in
matters of country’s key foreign
relationships, military budget,
and national security decision-
making, Marshal law was not
considered necessary. To be
honest, in my opinion, military
had achieved “coup-less coup.”
For the first time, civil-military
relationship seemed to come off
its turbulent past by agreeing on
the major issues facing Pakistan
i.e.; India, national politics and
the economy. The reasons for
hesitancy in taking over the
reins of Pakistan has not been
very clear. Was it because of the
taming of the Generals in last
two decades by civil masters or,
the instable and falling econo-
my variable?
Though, many onlookers
world over are pondering on the
possible military takeover to
each challenge Pakistan faces
today, we have to realise that
this compulsive speculation is
based upon a deep-rooted expec-
tation of the people in Pakistani
culture that the military will
come to their rescue to rid a cor-
rupt and inefficient govern-
ment, even at the expense of
democracy
.
But, I as an observer of mili-
tary matters believe that those
days seem to be over for now.
With Imran out of power for long
and under arrest, and his sup-
porters creating unprecedented
civil unrest situation in the his-
toryof Pakistan,thereappearno
signs of an imminent hard or
soft coup by the generals. The
army, it seems has digested the
insult of torching of houses of
two important Corps command-
ers and damage to its General
Headquarters by the unruly
crowed on 9th May afternoon.
Indeed, it is for political or
social thinkers to describe this
mystery in its entirety
. I person-
ally feel that though each Paki-
stan military dictator was of a
different brand & style and was
subjected to different circum-
stances while coming to power,
they all helped their adversar-
ies to bounce back to power
with a vengeance. All of them
were possessed with gaining
legitimacy to an illegitimate
take over. The prescription to
make the Supreme Court en-
dorse the military takeover
plagued all of them.
Although, the corrupt and in-
secure environment in the game
was favourable to the military
regime in the beginning, a bit of
arm twisting and the belief that
power flows through the barrel
of the gun helped the fortune
seekers to power. The complica-
tions came to light when the
generals at the helm tried fitting
into the long-established politi-
calmould.EachtimetheKhakhi
came to power in Pakistan, the
people realised that the money-
making greed by those in power
was no different to the earlier
civilian regime.
In current times the Pakistan
military leadership faces a sig-
nificant mess. Though it enjoys
a special reputation in the coun-
try’s political scenario, it is also
aware of its inherent limita-
tions. Therefore, the decision to
be in direct control of the nation
or, influence indirectly from the
side-lines becomes a predica-
ment. In either case, I presume,

In the initial investigation, it has
come to fore that the tiger died of
multiple organ failure. The exact
cause of death would be known after

Negligence was done in shifting the tiger
from a closed vehicle about 700 km away
from its location during day time in the
scorching heat. It is also necessary to know
the truth of tranquilising it in excess. In the initial
form, it shows the insensitivity and negligence of the
department and officials concerned. I urge CM Ashok
Gehlot and Forest Minister Hemaram Choudhary to
take cognisance of this very sensitive issue and take
action against the concerned officials.

Jaipur: CongressMLA
Ved Prakash Solanki,
who is considered close
to Sachin Pilot, raised
questions on the role
of Congress in-charge
Sukhjinder Singh
Randhawa.
He accused him of
not being able to coor-
dinate with the party
leaders in Rajasthan.
He told reporters in
Jaipur that Randhawa
was supposed to estab-
lish coordination
among the leaders but
he could not do this.
“Randhawa should
have established coor-
dination. He listened to
us and after this; he
should have resolved
our issues. He heard
our points but nothing
happened after that,”
he said.
Solanki said that it is
very important to es-
tablish coordination
because assembly elec-
tions are coming, and
if there is no coordina-
tion then it will harm
the party
.
Criticising chief
minister Ashok Ge-
hlot for praising BJP
MLA Shobharani
Kushwah for cross vot-
ing in favour of Con-
gress candidate in Ra-
jya Sabha elections
last year, he asked
whether the MLAs
who supported Sachin
Pilot were cowards.
On CM’s allegations
that MLA s had taken
money from BJP to top-
ple his government,
Solanki rejected the al-
legation and said that
CM is the home minis-
ter and if he had evi-
dence then he should
have already taken ac-
tion in the matter.
He said that he was
a supporter of Pilot
and will continue to
stand by him.

The tiger was sent

After this, the tiger
went to a water hole at

found the tiger lying at
the same spot. The per-

In the year when the country

serial death of tigers in the

world. The death of more than
30 tigers in four years and the
disappearance of the same
number of tigers have raised
serious questions on forest
management. After the death
of MT4 in Mukundra, the
death of T-104 in Udaipur’s

has angered wildlife lovers
and they are demanding
concrete action. The inves-

public and under political
pressure some officers
are constantly involved
in wildlife.
Three tiger reserves of the
State will get one tigress
each from Ranthambore for
which the administration is
preparing. Permission for
tigress shifting has been tak-

death of tigress in Mukundra
only one tiger is left there.
In such a situation first of all
tigress is expected to be sent
to Mukundra. A tigress is ex-

is also a possibility of having
a couple and two cubs. All
three tigresses will be shifted
from the non-tourism area of

Nathdwara: Prime
Minister Narendra
Modi on Wednesday,
said that Rajasthan has
also suffered for not
building infrastructure
with foresight.
“You know how diffi-
cult it was to come and
go in this desert due to
lack of connectivity
. Be
it farming or business
activities, everything
was difficult,” he said
while addressing the
programme in Nath-
dwara after laying foun-
dation stones and inau-
gurating infrastructure
development projects
costing over Rs 5,500
crore.
He said his govern-
ment is giving maxi-
mum emphasis to mod-
ern infrastructure.
“Modern infrastruc-
ture increases connec-
tivity in cities and vil-
lages, increases conven-
ience and improves
people’s lives as well as
accelerates develop-
ment. When we talk
about the vision of a
developed India in the
coming 25 years, then
this modern infrastruc-
ture is emerging as a
new force at its core,”
he said.

Abu Road: PM Naren-
dra Modi on Wednes-
day, alleged that the
Congress government
in Rajasthan was tak-
ing a soft stand against
terrorists due to its
appeasement politics
and took a dig over in-
fighting in the party,
saying the “CM does
not have faith in his
MLAs” and they also
don’t trust him.
Addressing a rally in
Abu Road, he alleged
that an “ugly form of
political battle” has
been on for the last five
years in Raj and in-
stead of working in
people’s interest, Con-
gress leaders were busy
in “the game of looting
and saving the chair.”
Referring to 2008
Jaipur serial blasts
that claimed 71 lives
and left 185 others in-
jured, the PM alleged
that the Congress govt
didn’t fight the case
strongly, leading to the
acquittal of all the ac-
cused. “The Congress
govt of Rajasthan did
what the Congress is
notorious for. The Con-
gress has always taken
a soft stand on terror-
ists for appeasement. It
doesn’t leave any
chance to stand with
terrorist ideology,” he
alleged.
“What kind of gov-
ernment is this where
the CM does not have
faith in his own MLAs
and they also do not
have faith in their
chief minister. Every-
one is competing to hu-
miliate others,” he
said.
Jaipur: Former CM Vasundhara Raje said
that the truth is also that the development
that took place during the tenure of PM Modi
is unprecedented and as a Chief Minister,
Gehlot should welcome this instead of being
annoyed. “Doesn’t the Chief Minister re-
member that half of the country’s population
was deprived of facilities like toilet for years.
Didn’t the Congress get power many times by
giving the slogan of Garibi Hatao? And pov-
erty was not removed even once. she said.
“Now neither the Gandhi family nor his MLAs
are listening to Gehlot. Pilot is a rebel. Afraid
of his impending defeat, Gehlot is saying any-
thing to get in the eyes of Rahul Gandhi, while
Modi ji has saved the country and the records
of development that have been set were seen
neither in the past nor future.”

s Co-Founder of
Driveway Devi, I
had the privi-
lege of sitting
down with re-
nowned actor
Riya Sen and
asking her a slew of ques-
tions that delved into her
childhood and growing
up years, the inheritance
of a royal as well as artis-
tic legacy, and her
thoughts on mental
health. Here are excerpts
from that extremely can-
did and no-hold-barred
interaction.
Riya, time travel with
us, if you will, and
share some insights
into your childhood
and growing up years.
What were they like? Is
anything specific that
characterized that
phase for you?
My childhood years
were filled with art,
culture and a con-
stant array of
very colourful
people! I feel
blessed to
have been
brought up
in such an environment.
I did face a lot of difficul-
ties in school on both ac-
counts of having grown
up in a non-traditional
manner, considering I
started to act at a very
young age which kept me
away from studies at
times, and having to deal
with select faculty who
would treat me differ-
ently (not positive) on ac-
count of my family back-
ground.
I did not face any sig-
nificant problems in col-
lege. I was on my own in
Mumbai at the time.
What was it like having
a mother who was an
icon in her own right
but also an incredibly
busy actor
, and a work-
ing professional?
At home, we had guests
over and parties all the
time, practically every
evening. My mother
would travel a lot for her
work and both my sister
and I would miss her ter-
ribly. I would remain
quite distracted from my
school and then my
shoot assignments at a
young age would keep
meawayfrommyfriends
and family for consider-
able periods.
Through any negative
phases, I worked on just
groundingmyfeelingsby
talking to myself
through whatever might
be troubling me and reas-
suring myself that all
situations are just tempo-
rary and that once we are
on the other side of this
negative phase, life is
much better.
What are your views
and perception on, and
of divorce, especially
from the perspective of
children of acrimoni-
ous couples? Some say
children need both par-
ents; others contend it
is better to have at least
one happy parent, than
two miserable ones.
I think that divorce is
much harder on children
than it is for the parents.
Having said that,
parents should split
when a marriage is
very unhappy as
over time their
p r e d i c a m e n t
weighs very
heavily on the
children.
E ve n t u a l l y,
children of di-
vorce fare better
than children
who have to be
subject to
constant
unhappiness and sorrow
at home.
Could you share the pre-
cise circumstances of
your foray into acting?
Was it expected, sus-
pected, premeditated,
or none of the above?
Acting came to me com-
pletely by fluke and my
actual first film was just
at the age of about four
where I played my own
mother`s child! My fami-
ly never expected or put
any pressure on me to
start acting. It somehow
just happened and before
I knew it, I was knee-deep
in it!
Careful contemplation
only came after (laughs!).
Speak to some challeng-
es you faced upon de-
buting celluloid. After
all, there was naturally
immense pressure and
scrutiny was there not?
Main challenge was that I
wassoyoungwhenIstart-
ed shooting for music vid-
eos and movies. I`d be sur-
rounded by much older
people on set and I was
extremely shy at the time.
I`dbeverynervousalotof
the time on set due to this.
Also, long periods away
from home and travelling
tosomeverydifficultloca-
tions proved to be very
challenging as I started.
Comparison is part
and parcel of life, argu-
ably more so in the en-
tertainment ‘business’
than in other spheres
of work. Was this fur-
ther compounded by
having your sister also
inhabit the same pro-
fessional realm?
There has been a lot
of comparison be-
tween my sister
and me. We
are two very
dif ferent
p e o p l e
and we never compete
with each other. We acted
together in a few films
and enjoyed ourselves at
the time. Quite often, we
are mistaken for each
other (laughs!).
We have always dealt
with comparison by nev-
er paying much heed to
it. As mentioned, we nev-
er compete and have
carved out a different
niche for ourselves in the
industry
.
Fame and celebrity can
be a painful and erratic
mistress. How have you
coped with the various
peaks and valleys of
stardom?
I`ve certainly gone
through my share of ex-
treme situations due to
how certain movies have
done or just losing op-
portunities at the last
moment.
There is a lot of heart-
ache that is not seen on
screen!
I have always been
very spiritual and prac-
tice yoga regularly. This
has helped me a lot
through tough situa-
tions. I also love to travel
and take the opportunity
to distance myself dur-
ing this period and work
on my hobbies or pas-
sions. This always revi-
talises me and helps me
go after projects that pre-
sent themselves to me
soon after.
It is no secret that so-
cial media can be a
boon or a bane and that
celebrities ostensibly
face a greater share of
brickbats than others.
How do you view social
media?
I go through each com-
ment on my social media
posts and simply block
the users who troll. It is
out of our power to stop
people from spreading
extreme negativity just
because they`re
anonymous and
unaccounta-
ble. Once
they`re blocked,
they`reevenmore
inconsequen-
tial. It does not
affect me any-
more. I am al-
ways ever
grateful to my
followers who
have always
been very
encourag-
ing and
showed me
a lot of love.
Finally
then
Riya, as a
Mental Well-
ness Initia-
tives Platform,
Driveway Devi
would love to
know your views on
Mental Health.
Mental health and phys-
ical health go together. I
think it is extremely im-
portant to keep yourself
fit and exercising, which
has just as positive an
impact on our minds as
it does on our bodies.
Having said that, it is so
important to reach out
to someone to talk to if
you`re feeling depressed
or overwhelmed. We
have to do away with
this stigma wherein
we look at someone
as weak if they`re
not okay mentally
.
This is a grave
mistake. We must
encourage people
through love and
support to reach
out to a profes-
sional for help if
things get very
bad. All situations
are temporary and
it`s never worth
losing oneself
due to the feeling
that no op-
tions are avail-
able to us for
support.

  • 3. www.firstindia.co.in I https://firstindia.co.in/epapers/jaipur I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia KARTIKEY DEV SINGH was a visual that is seldom seen. Prime Minister Narendra Modi alighted from the Air Force heli- copter at Nathdwara on Wednesday and was received by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot at the helipad. To the surprise of those present, it was a ‘coinci- dence’ that the duo had donned almost similar clothes, white kur- ta and off-white Nehru/Modi jack- et. The individuals, one — a pre- mier of a Nation and the other — a premier of a State, met with ex- treme warm heartedness and com- passion. While the duo are custo- dians and proponents of two sepa- rate political ideologies, which has long been at the opposite ends of the spectrum; yet there ap- peared no love lost between the two political bigwigs. Their journey so far has been almost similar. Both have been in- fluenced by ideas of service from an early age, both started giving their time to the idea in their teens, both of them struggled for that idea and through that strug- gle, rose to the political heights in their respective parties. They followed the same line, yet the relationship between Modi and Gehlot is an inexplicable puz- zle! On the one hand, there is a friendship on a personal level be- tween the two. When Modi reached Nathdwara helipad on Wednesday, Gehlot warmly wel- comed Modi. Coincidentally, the dressing sense of both was also almost identical and after this, from the stage in Nathdwara, Modi called Gehlot, his friend. In fact, in the past, Modi has termed Gehlot as the senior-most Chief Minister, while also showering many accolades on the Congress leader from time to time. And this was visible by CM Ge- hlot’sgestureof receivingPMModi atNathdwara,anact,notmanyOp- positionCMsadhereto, andyetCM Gehlot, displaying a sense of pro- priety ,wentaheadandreceivedPM Modi. In turn, the PM too acknowl- edged Gehlot’ gesture and was all smiles and visibly happy on seeing his counterpart! This ‘respect and honour’ that both the leaders have for each other, was visible during Gehlot’s address at Nathdwara as well. In fact, the duo even cracked light jokes among themselves, half a dozen times, while seated on the stage. When the CM stood up for his address, then the slogan of Modi-Modi echoed among the common people. In such a situa- tion, PM Modi himself pacified the people by pointing from the stage. Along with this, he also in- dicated BJP State president CP Joshi to stop the people from rais- ing slogans. But on the other hand, both the leaders did not hesitate to sur- round and taunt each other’s par- ty . Gehlot took sarcastic jibes from the stage in front of Modi and said that ‘whoever may be in the gov- ernment, but the Opposition should be respected. We used to compete with Gujarat in develop- ment, now Rajasthan is far ahead of Gujarat’. Meanwhile, PM Modi too tar- geted the Congress rule and said that ‘Some people don’t want to see good happening in the country , they only like to create controver- sy’. And after this statement of Modi, Gehlot tweeted his reaction and said that PM should have avoided giving political statement in his (Gehlot’s) presence in the government program. Everything said and done, the ‘relationship’ between Modi and Gehlot is akin to that of mature individuals where even though they call out each other before the public, yet there is a deep admira- tion between two for each other. The failing health of Mr Jin- nah did not provide him with sufficient time to raise the re- quired civil institutions that could control the army . Army in Pakistan is ‘SEC- OND TO NONE’ in the hierar- chy of power game and has used its rivalry with India to validate its control of total power and to place itself above all admonish- ments. Even though it never wonanyof thefourwarsagainst India, it managed to wage a suc- cessful war against its own dem- ocratic system and ruling Paki- stan directly for over 30 years and influencing the corridors of political power for rest of the other period since its independ- ence. Yes, the Generals run the country from behind the façade of civilian govt face. In fact, last three Chiefs of Army Staff, Generals Kayani, Gen Raheel and Gen Bajwa all decided not to be the face to take direct control of the govern- ment. As the Army had gained de facto control over nation’s nuclear and missile programs in addition to a direct say in matters of country’s key foreign relationships, military budget, and national security decision- making, Marshal law was not considered necessary. To be honest, in my opinion, military had achieved “coup-less coup.” For the first time, civil-military relationship seemed to come off its turbulent past by agreeing on the major issues facing Pakistan i.e.; India, national politics and the economy. The reasons for hesitancy in taking over the reins of Pakistan has not been very clear. Was it because of the taming of the Generals in last two decades by civil masters or, the instable and falling econo- my variable? Though, many onlookers world over are pondering on the possible military takeover to each challenge Pakistan faces today, we have to realise that this compulsive speculation is based upon a deep-rooted expec- tation of the people in Pakistani culture that the military will come to their rescue to rid a cor- rupt and inefficient govern- ment, even at the expense of democracy . But, I as an observer of mili- tary matters believe that those days seem to be over for now. With Imran out of power for long and under arrest, and his sup- porters creating unprecedented civil unrest situation in the his- toryof Pakistan, thereappearno signs of an imminent hard or soft coup by the generals. The army, it seems has digested the insult of torching of houses of two important Corps command- ers and damage to its General Headquarters by the unruly crowed on 9th May afternoon. Indeed, it is for political or social thinkers to describe this mystery in its entirety . I person- ally feel that though each Paki- stan military dictator was of a different brand & style and was subjected to different circum- stances while coming to power, they all helped their adversar- ies to bounce back to power with a vengeance. All of them were possessed with gaining legitimacy to an illegitimate take over. The prescription to make the Supreme Court en- dorse the military takeover plagued all of them. Although, the corrupt and in- secure environment in the game was favourable to the military regime in the beginning, a bit of arm twisting and the belief that power flows through the barrel of the gun helped the fortune seekers to power. The complica- tions came to light when the generals at the helm tried fitting into the long-established politi- calmould.EachtimetheKhakhi came to power in Pakistan, the people realised that the money- making greed by those in power was no different to the earlier civilian regime. In current times the Pakistan military leadership faces a sig- nificant mess. Though it enjoys a special reputation in the coun- try’s political scenario, it is also aware of its inherent limita- tions. Therefore, the decision to be in direct control of the nation or, influence indirectly from the side-lines becomes a predica- ment. In either case, I presume, itcannotactexceptlikeanArmy – imperfectly . This deadlock gets worsewhencitizensexpectmore from the army be as it may of its role and constraints. Addressing a rally in Abu Road, he alleged that an “ugly form of political battle” has been on for the last five years in Raj and in- stead of working in people’s interest, Con- gress leaders were busy in “the game of looting and saving the chair.” Referring to 2008 Jaipur serial blasts that claimed 71 lives and left 185 others in- jured, the PM alleged that the Congress govt didn’t fight the case strongly, leading to the acquittal of all the ac- cused. “The Congress govt of Rajasthan did what the Congress is notorious for. The Con- gress has always taken a soft stand on terror- ists for appeasement. It doesn’t leave any chance to stand with terrorist ideology,” he alleged. “What kind of gov- ernment is this where the CM does not have faith in his own MLAs and they also do not have faith in their chief minister. Jaipur: Former CM Vasundhara Raje said that the truth is also that the development that took place during the tenure of PM Modi is unprecedented and as a Chief Minister, Gehlot should welcome this instead of being annoyed. “Doesn’t the Chief Minister re- member that half of the country’s population was deprived of facilities like toilet for years. Didn’t the Congress get power many times by giving the slogan of Garibi Hatao? And pov- erty was not removed even once. she said. “Now neither the Gandhi family nor his MLAs are listening to Gehlot. • 11. s Co-Founder of Driveway Devi, I had the privi- lege of sitting down with re- nowned actor Riya Sen and asking her a slew of ques- tions that delved into her childhood and growing up years, the inheritance of a royal as well as artis- tic legacy, and her thoughts on mental health. Here are excerpts from that extremely can- did and no-hold-barred interaction. Riya, time travel with us, if you will, and share some insights into your childhood and growing up years. What were they like? Is anything specific that characterized that phase for you? My childhood years were filled with art, culture and a con- stant array of very colourful people! I feel blessed to have been brought up in such an environment. I did face a lot of difficul- ties in school on both ac- counts of having grown up in a non-traditional manner, considering I started to act at a very young age which kept me away from studies at times, and having to deal with select faculty who would treat me differ- ently (not positive) on ac- count of my family back- ground. I did not face any sig- nificant problems in col- lege. I was on my own in Mumbai at the time. What was it like having a mother who was an icon in her own right but also an incredibly busy actor , and a work- ing professional? At home, we had guests over and parties all the time, practically every evening. My mother would travel a lot for her work and both my sister and I would miss her ter- ribly. I would remain quite distracted from my school and then my shoot assignments at a young age would keep meawayfrommyfriends and family for consider- able periods. Through any negative phases, I worked on just groundingmyfeelingsby talking to myself through whatever might be troubling me and reas- suring myself that all situations are just tempo- rary and that once we are on the other side of this negative phase, life is much better. What are your views and perception on, and of divorce, especially from the perspective of children of acrimoni- ous couples? Some say children need both par- ents; others contend it is better to have at least one happy parent, than two miserable ones. I think that divorce is much harder on children than it is for the parents. Having said that, parents should split when a marriage is very unhappy as over time their p r e d i c a m e n t weighs very heavily on the children. E ve n t u a l l y, children of di- vorce fare better than children who have to be subject to constant unhappiness and sorrow at home. Could you share the pre- cise circumstances of your foray into acting? Was it expected, sus- pected, premeditated, or none of the above? Acting came to me com- pletely by fluke and my actual first film was just at the age of about four where I played my own mother`s child! My fami- ly never expected or put any pressure on me to start acting. It somehow just happened and before I knew it, I was knee-deep in it! Careful contemplation only came after (laughs!). Speak to some challeng- es you faced upon de- buting celluloid. After all, there was naturally immense pressure and scrutiny was there not? Main challenge was that I wassoyoungwhenIstart- ed shooting for music vid- eos and movies. I`d be sur- rounded by much older people on set and I was extremely shy at the time. I`dbeverynervousalotof the time on set due to this. Also, long periods away from home and travelling tosomeverydifficultloca- tions proved to be very challenging as I started. Comparison is part and parcel of life, argu- ably more so in the en- tertainment ‘business’ than in other spheres of work. Was this fur- ther compounded by having your sister also inhabit the same pro- fessional realm? There has been a lot of comparison be- tween my sister and me. We are two very dif ferent p e o p l e and we never compete with each other. We acted together in a few films and enjoyed ourselves at the time. Quite often, we are mistaken for each other (laughs!). We have always dealt with comparison by nev- er paying much heed to it. As mentioned, we nev- er compete and have carved out a different niche for ourselves in the industry . Fame and celebrity can be a painful and erratic mistress. How have you coped with the various peaks and valleys of stardom? I`ve certainly gone through my share of ex- treme situations due to how certain movies have done or just losing op- portunities at the last moment. There is a lot of heart- ache that is not seen on screen! I have always been very spiritual and prac- tice yoga regularly. This has helped me a lot through tough situa- tions. I also love to travel and take the opportunity to distance myself dur- ing this period and work on my hobbies or pas- sions. This always revi- talises me and helps me go after projects that pre- sent themselves to me soon after. It is no secret that so- cial media can be a boon or a bane and that celebrities ostensibly face a greater share of brickbats than others. How do you view social media? I go through each com- ment on my social media posts and simply block the users who troll. It is out of our power to stop people from spreading extreme negativity just because they`re anonymous and unaccounta- ble. Once they`re blocked, they`reevenmore inconsequen- tial. It does not affect me any- more. I am al- ways ever grateful to my followers who have always been very encourag- ing and showed me a lot of love. Finally then Riya, as a Mental Well- ness Initia- tives Platform, Driveway Devi would love to know your views on Mental Health. Mental health and phys- ical health go together. I think it is extremely im- portant to keep yourself fit and exercising, which has just as positive an impact on our minds as it does on our bodies. Having said that, it is so important to reach out to someone to talk to if you`re feeling depressed or overwhelmed. We have to do away with this stigma wherein we look at someone as weak if they`re not okay mentally . This is a grave mistake. We must encourage people through love and support to reach out to a profes- sional for help if things get very bad. All situations are temporary and it`s never worth losing oneself due to the feeling that no op- tions are avail- able to us for support.
