Healthcare organizations must continually make adjustments to maintain optimal func-
tion (Christiansen 2002). A number of different techniques can be used to determine
where adjustments need to be made. One essential technique involves a discussion of an
organization’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, commonly called SWOT
analysis. SWOT analysis has been used extensively in other industries but has not been
widely used in healthcare (Kahveci and Meads 2008).
SWOT analysis is a precursor to strategic planning and is performed by a panel of
experts who can assess the organization from a critical perspective (Gibis et al. 2001). This
panel could comprise senior leaders, board members, employees, medical staff, patients,
community leaders, and technical experts. Panel members base their assessments on utili-
zation rates, outcome measures, patient satisfaction statistics, organizational performance
measures, and financial status. While based on data and facts, the conclusions drawn from
SWOT analysis are an expert opinion of the panel.

nary decision-making tool that sets the stage for this work.
Step 1 of SWOT analysis involves the collection and evaluation of key data. De-
pending on the organization, these data might include population demographics, com-

Changes in the healthcare system are bringing new risks, which hospitals and
health systems need to manage effectively to remain competitive.
The U.S. healthcare ecosystem represents a $5 trillion market and is projected to grow to a
$5.5 trillion market by 2025. The exponential growth comes from several thematic drivers,
including the shift from volume to value and the rise of the consumer, both of which are turning
the industry on its head as new payment models and greater expansion of consumer options
are being introduced to the marketplace. Other drivers include evolving mobile strategies, new
entrants, an aging population, and continued uncertainty in political and regulatory
environments. With medical device cybersecurity vulnerabilities being reported at record
levels, it is evident that new risks are constantly threatening the quality of patient care and
providers’ long-term prosperity.
As the healthcare market expands and evolves, the inherent risks also are increasing, as
shown in the sidebar.
Moving Beyond Risk Identification
Traditionally, the healthcare industry has exceled in risk identification and assessment. The
industry has been less proficient at prioritizing and managing risk, however, and it has a vital
need to tackle these areas. To do so, healthcare providers must invest more in building
enterprise risk management (ERM) capabilities.
As a defensive strategy, a focus on avoiding risk may seem to hold promise, but no hospital or
health system can avoid risk entirely. By giving an organization insight into how to take the
right risks at the right time, an effective ERM program can help the organization more
successfully execute its strategic imperatives.
Getting Beyond Basic Effectiveness
Despite the growing importance of programs today, and the raised awareness of their
importance, many healthcare providers have been slow to adopt a more sophisticated
approach. As shown in the exhibit below, the current state for most providers falls between
“basic” and “evolving” maturities for ERM programs.

It is extremely interesting to see students strongly arguing for the most important step in an ERM process even when there may not actually be a hierarchy, Increased student engagement strengthened team-based skills, personalized student guidance, focused classroom discussion, and faculty freedom are several benefits of the growing LCT adoption.
Managing Financial Risk assessment is a major point that TL approach gives an example of the trade-offs, costs, and benefits of hedging with futures contracts often starting with a simple natural hedge. Here, the student records the respective payoffs to long and short positions when prices change. Students memorize the transactions and expect to replicate the steps with different numbers, and maybe even a different futures contract for a challenging TL course.
ERM is a business management support process for several years and proponents of ERM have been advocating incorporating the ERM process into strategic and business planning to increase its utility. Healthcare spending: Earlier in this course, we talked about healthcare spending; where does the money
come from, and where does it go? That is definitely a key concept from the course. You learned that private
insurance is the number one source of funding for healthcare in America, representing 32% of total healthcare
dollars. Even with so many Americans currently uninsured, health insurance is the number one source of
funding. Next comes Medicare at 20% and then Medicaid at 15%. Government programs overall make up
35% of spending. That may shed some light on why government has so much influence in our field. In terms
of out-of-pocket expenditures, they truly make up a small portion of healthcare spending in America, just 12%
of total healthcare spending (Finkler, Purtell, Calabrese, & Smith, 2013).
Where does the money go? Well, hospitals clearly get the largest piece of the healthcare dollar, receiving

are next at 10%. Several other areas receive smaller amounts, about 5-7% each. Such areas include dental
services, health insurance administration cost, and nursing care (Finkler et al., 2013).

The aim of this study is to establish the profile of finance managers by identifying the situation of them in order to facilitate the work of human resource management in hospitals, and to form a source of information. The profiles of the finance managers of 50 private hospitals in Istanbul have been determined and the study styles by the survey conducted in the study. Personal work styles that determine the personality profile; Work Finisher, Team worker, Analyzer, Perspective Opener. In addition, the socio-demographic characteristics of finance managers have been determined. Data collected at the end of the study were evaluated with ANOVA, Kruskal Wallis and Chi-Square tests. According to the results of the study, finance managers found that they worked in the style of finisher (48%), analyst (32%) and teamer (20%) respectively. No manager is working on a perspective opening style. There was a significant difference between personal working styles and educational (p = 0.006). Moreover, there was no difference between the mean age values according to personal working styles (p = 0.088). There was also no difference between the years of study (p = 0.185). As a result of study, it has been determined that finance managers in the private hospitals can hold on to these businesses if they are mostly working and analytical, and that their educational situation reinforces and makes them desirable. Healthcare organizations must continually make adjustments to maintain optimal func-
tion (Christiansen 2002). A number of different techniques can be used to determine
where adjustments need to be made. One essential technique involves a discussion of an
organization’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, commonly called SWOT
analysis. SWOT analysis has been used extensively in other industries but has not been
widely used in healthcare (Kahveci and Meads 2008).
SWOT analysis is a precursor to strategic planning and is performed by a panel of
experts who can assess the organization from a critical perspective (Gibis et al. 2001). This
panel could comprise senior leaders, board members, employees, medical staff, patients,
community leaders, and technical experts. Panel members base their assessments on utili-
zation rates, outcome measures, patient satisfaction statistics, organizational performance
measures, and financial status. While based on data and facts, the conclusions drawn from
SWOT analysis are an expert opinion of the panel.

SWOT analysis is an examination of an organization’s internal strengths and weaknesses,
its opportunities for growth and improvement, and the threats the external environment
presents to its survival. Originally designed for use in other industries, it is gaining in-
creased use in healthcare.

The primary aim of strategic planning is to bring an organization into balance with the
external environment and to maintain that balance over time (Sackett, Jones, and Erdley
2005). Organizations accomplish this balance by evaluating new programs and services
with the intent of maximizing organizational performance. SWOT analysis is a prelimi-
nary decision-making tool that sets the stage for this work.
Step 1 of SWOT analysis involves the collection and evaluation of key data. De-
pending on the organization, these data might include population demographics, com-
munity health status, sources of healthcare funding, and/or the current status of medical
technology. Once the data have been collected and analyzed, the organization’s capabilities
in these areas are assessed.

Changes in the healthcare system are bringing new risks, which hospitals and
health systems need to manage effectively to remain competitive.
The U.S. healthcare ecosystem represents a $5 trillion market and is projected to grow to a
$5.5 trillion market by 2025. The exponential growth comes from several thematic drivers,
including the shift from volume to value and the rise of the consumer, both of which are turning
the industry on its head as new payment models and greater expansion of consumer options
are being introduced to the marketplace. Other drivers include evolving mobile strategies, new
entrants, an aging population, and continued uncertainty in political and regulatory
environments. With medical device cybersecurity vulnerabilities being reported at record
levels, it is evident that new risks are constantly threatening the quality of patient care and
providers’ long-term prosperity.
As the healthcare market expands and evolves, the inherent risks also are increasing, as
shown in the sidebar.
Moving Beyond Risk Identification
Traditionally, the healthcare industry has exceled in risk identification and assessment. The
industry has been less proficient at prioritizing and managing risk, however, and it has a vital
need to tackle these areas. To do so, healthcare providers must invest more in building
enterprise risk management (ERM) capabilities.
As a defensive strategy, a focus on avoiding risk may seem to hold promise, but no hospital or
health system can avoid risk entirely. By giving an organization insight into how to take the
right risks at the right time, an effective ERM program can help the organization more
successfully execute its strategic imperatives.
Getting Beyond Basic Effectiveness
Despite the growing importance of programs today, and the raised awareness of their
importance, many healthcare providers have been slow to adopt a more sophisticated
approach. As shown in the exhibit below, the current state for most providers falls between
“basic” and “evolving” maturities for ERM programs.

Organizations classified as basic recognize the implications of risk to
achieving the organization’s objectives and are just beginning to have
important discussions on the topics of risk. Often defined as hazards
and considered only in the context of their adverse consequences, risks
managed at a basic maturity levels are identified on an annual basis; risk mitigation and
controls are seldom factored in, and reporting is seldom, most often biannually at best.

ERM at Learner Centered Teaching & Strategic Risk Management:
Learner Centered Teaching (LCT) is based on learning research that summons more active, inductive instruction. It is extremely interesting to see students strongly arguing for the most important step in an ERM process even when there may not actually be a hierarchy, Increased student engagement strengthened team-based skills, personalized student guidance, focused classroom discussion, and faculty freedom are several benefits of the growing LCT adoption.
Managing Financial Risk assessment is a major point that TL approach gives an example of the trade-offs, costs, and benefits of hedging with futures contracts often starting with a simple natural hedge. Here, the student records the respective payoffs to long and short positions when prices change. Students memorize the transactions and expect to replicate the steps with different numbers, and maybe even a different futures contract for a challenging TL course.
ERM is a business management support process for several years and proponents of ERM have been advocating incorporating the ERM process into strategic and business planning to increase its utility. The specific purpose is to reduce the impact of adverse events and be ready to exploit emerging opportunities and adapting the ERM process within the existing strategic and business planning methodology. Organizations that view the ERM process as supporting business strategies should consider positioning it where the primary goals are both to grow the business and to protect value: corporate planning and the business units can be utilized to incorporate ERM into the strategic and annual business planning process with three internal scan elements -

Healthcare spending: Earlier in this course, we talked about healthcare spending; where does the money
come from, and where does it go? That is definitely a key concept from the course. You learned that private
insurance is the number one source of funding for healthcare in America, representing 32% of total healthcare
dollars. Even with so many Americans currently uninsured, health insurance is the number one source of
funding. Next comes Medicare at 20% and then Medicaid at 15%. Government programs overall make up
35% of spending. That may shed some light on why government has so much influence in our field. In terms
of out-of-pocket expenditures, they truly make up a small portion of healthcare spending in America, just 12%
of total healthcare spending (Finkler, Purtell, Calabrese, & Smith, 2013).
Where does the money go? Well, hospitals clearly get the largest piece of the healthcare dollar, receiving
31% of total medical spending each year. Doctors and clinics come next at 20%, and prescription medications
are next at 10%. Several other areas receive smaller amounts, about 5-7% each. Such areas include dental
services, health insurance administration cost, and nursing care (Finkler et al., 2013).

A Research on Determining The Profile of Finance Managers In Private Hospitals
The aim of this study is to establish the profile of finance managers by identifying the situation of them in order to facilitate the work of human resource management in hospitals, and to form a source of information. The profiles of the finance managers of 50 private hospitals in Istanbul have been determined and the study styles by the survey conducted in the study. Personal work styles that determine the personality profile; Work Finisher, Team worker, Analyzer, Perspective Opener. In addition, the socio-demographic characteristics of finance managers have been determined. Data collected at the end of the study were evaluated with ANOVA, Kruskal Wallis and Chi-Square tests. According to the results of the study, finance managers found that they worked in the style of finisher (48%), analyst (32%) and teamer (20%) respectively. No manager is working on a perspective opening style. There was a significant difference between personal working styles and educational (p = 0.006). Moreover, there was no difference between the mean age values according to personal working styles (p = 0.088). There was also no difference between the years of study (p = 0.185). As a result of study, it has been determined that finance managers in the private hospitals can hold on to these businesses if they are mostly working and analytical, and that their educational situation reinforces and makes them desirable. Solution Introduction :- Healthcare organizations are focusing more attention and effort on risk management, due to both external factors (such as public expectations for greater accountability and governance), and internal factors (such as better resource allocation). Physician involvement in risk management activities will vary greatly from institution to institution and depend on the physician’s role within the leadership structure. At the very least, all physician leaders can expect to be involved in the patient safety aspect of risk management (as discussed in the previous section). With respect to other risks within the organization such as financial risks, human resource risks, privacy risks, and others, physician leaders may provide input into various aspects of risk management (identification, assessment, mitigation, etc.). Physician leaders are encouraged to consult with hospital administration to understand their hospital’s model for risk management and their potential role in risk management activities. The Johns Hopkins Health System (“JHHS”) is the sole member of The Johns Hopkins Hospital (“JHH”). JHHS is a not-for-profit organization incorporated in the State of Maryland to formulate policy among and provide centralized management for JHHS and its Affiliates. Possible Risks/Involved involved and solutions are as under :- External Drivers 1. Public accountability and reputation: expectations for public accountability in healthcare are increasing, including better fiscal responsibility for public funds. This is also becoming a more important factor for recruitment of competent staff, board members, and donors. 2. Governance: a call for better corporate governance is influencing the health system, as organizations and their boards are moving towards ensuring processes are in place to identify and manage risk. Investment Risk :- Investments include equity method investments in managed funds, which include hedge funds, private partnerships and other investments which do not have readily ascertainable fair values and may be subject to withdrawal restrictions. Investments in hedge funds, private partnerships, and other investments (collectively “alternative investments”), are accounted for under the equity method. The equity method income or loss from these alternative investments is included in the Statement of Operations and Changes in Net Assets as an unrealized gain or loss within excess of revenues over expenses. Alternative investments are less liquid than other types of investments held by JHH. These instruments may contain elements of both credit and market risk. Such risks include, but are not limited to, limited liquidity, absence of oversight, dependence upon key individuals, emphasis on speculative investments, and nondisclosure of portfolio composition. Steps to mitigate such risk :- Revenue recognignition standard says that revenue should be recognised until the said revenue accrues and losses should be recognised when there is any possibility of such losses to occur.
